I have terrible eating habits, when I get stressed my appetite tends to completely shut down and i'll end up living on 1000 cals or less a day for months at a time. I went to cognitive behavioral therapy about the problem quite recently. I was 5'11 and approx 130lb which is just over the BMI level you need to be treated for eating disorders on the NHS, so although i'm pretty sure I have bullimia nervosa it's undiagnosed.

We played around with different CBT methods without much in the way of results. I started to suppliment my diet (after reading a 2+2 health & fitness post) with milk. Started off drinking approx 3 litres/day and trying to force a solid meal or two down along with it. This quickly dropped to less than 1 meal a day on average because consuming solids was becoming more difficult.

I now drink 4-6 litres a day and try to eat one small solid meal, although about 20% of the time i'll consume exclusively milk all day.. Am now about 155lbs and feel a lot better than I did at 130. More energy, better looking etc.
OP,

How long have these "terrible eating habits" been going on for? What did you eat before this and was there a sudden trigger to the new diet from the old? When is the last time you felt you had a decent apetite?

What stressors are likely to shut down your apetite and what coping mechanisms do you use to overcome them?

Any past medical history or psych history including problems with anxiety and/or depression?

I don't have any milk on hand but I think it has lots of protein in it and protein powder doesn't have many calories?

all i have to say is LOL at not being willing to smoke weed yet being willing to try a pill manufactured in a lab to get an appetite going.

I wouldn't do it everyday, but just as an extra tool to have at your disposal on particularly lazy low calorie consumption days
Used to do this, couple of teaspoons of olive oil per day. Using on low calorie days is a very good idea imo

No diagnosed history of mental illness for me (although my mothers mother did kill herself so some in the family).

I can remember hiding food up my sleeve during mealtimes to put in the bin rather than eat during preschool, so pretty much forever.

No obvious sudden trigger, and one was not uncovered during CBT. I occasionally get a good appetite after a really hard workout.

Of course you can do this. Doctors are human, and they can get fixated on an idea just like anybody else. If you want them to do more tests, harass them until they do. Don't tell them exactly WHAT tests, necessarily, but say you're concerned it's not a mental issue and might be physical, and it would help if they check it out.

If they do check everything out and they find absolutely no physical problems, then the fact that it has to be in your head might help you get past it

smoking weed is def not the answer

getting the munchies =/= enhancing your general appetite

Apparently he'd prefer to take manufactured drugs that probably have MANY more side-effects than marijuana. Makes sense, imo.

Even if he somehow got "addicted" to marijuana but developed a decent apetite after smoking -- I still think his health would be much better than it is now.

ur stupid if you havent been able to work out from my that the reason I dont want to try weed has nothing to do with its physical effects.

Hopey, the fact that i'd be involved in the drug scene and associate with dealers makes it completely unacceptable option for me and it should be clear why

Most of the weed where I live is grown outdoors or in grow-ops. A friend of mine used to grow it in his basement under lamps. If you live somewhere where medical marijuana is legal, it is grown in greenhouses.

I realize that there are stories of weed being grown in the third world in contaminated soil, but this would be the exception rather than the rule.

You really don't know anyone who has access to pot?

I'm a pretty boring, law-abiding guy, but I could get my hands on some pot pretty easily -- and I wouldn't have to deal (directly) with drug dealers to do so.

If I was living on a diet almost entirely of milk, I think I'd at least want to try smoking a joint or two to see if it improved my apetite.

It's quite possible that he subconsciously doesn't want to get better. All the way through the thread he has presented reasons why such and such a treatment wouldn't work, or why he can't get a certain treatment from a doctor, etc...

Eating disorders are notoriously hard to treat. If he doesn't have something physically wrong with him that is preventing him from eating, he'll need to rewire his brain to enjoy food. That's not something that you can do overnight.

This was going to be my suggestion. I saw that you lift - do you squat / deadlift heavy weights? Start a log in H&F and look up starting strength. I am similar to you in that I hate eating breakfast and often skip meals but on deadlift days by god my appetite triples.

I'm curious as to what he considers as being a "good apetite". Does it mean wanting to eat a 16oz steak with a baked potato, veggies, and dessert? Or does it mean eating half a piece of dry toast?

Forgetting for a second that your diet is extremely unhealthy and is almost certainly shortening your life, do you *want* to be able to enjoy food?

Or is your sole motivation for seeking medical help for your condition that you're concerned about your health?

This might have been asked previously in this thread, but do you enjoy the taste of food? Or does everything taste bland/gross to you?
