Not sure how his tournament skills transfer in cash game, but hey, it's good tv and I'm sure he'll give a lot of action. Very good news imo

I think DP is placed in the show for many reasons

1. A likeable guy and has definatly followers / fans / viewers
2. Made good runs in the ME
3. For the most of us its a mistery how he plays in cashgames, so why not give him the chance first on this show before tearing him apart?

Besides, seeing every time the same lineup in every show is also not fun anymore.
Wich brings me to : new players : more stuff for us to debate.
Everyone knows how Ivey, PA, Durrr etc plays, but a few know how DP plays in HS cashgames. He might burn himself, or he might surprise us, we dunno untill we actually see HSP SE6.

I wait before commenting or breaking down players untill i saw the show.
Why prejudge?

Joe is going to say "But the guy had 3 aces in his hand! How did he lose??" and just quit watching.

Dennis is a completely different animal when he is playing cash than when he plays tournaments. I know this based on playing with him many many times live and sweating him playing tournaments before he was famous. He is not the best cash player in the world for sure, but he is a definitely a very sound player, mixes it up and is far from a cookie-cutter nit. If you think he is a ****** that you can just slap around playing cash, you will get violated in a deeply painful and personal way. Not only will you be a favorite to lose some chips, but a bit of your ego as well. This based on what what must be many thousands of hands playing with him before he became famous, and I am confident... even based on what I saw in a single session since, that he has improved a great deal in these last years.

Scotty Clark was completely right in every point. Dennis is a guy with pretty much no ego whatsoever, is completely self-effacing and is always far more concerned with the other person in the conversation than himself (even in extraordinary circumstances). He once talked to me for several minutes on the phone (about me largely) only to tell me after what was to me a comically long time that he was at the Cards game that he was invited to throw out the first pitch and sit on the front row...and I am not THAT close a friend of his at all. I told him he should not have even answered the phone of course, but that is the kind of guy he is. If you know him at all, you know the reason he invited and payed the airfare for so many friends to go to Vegas was out of altruism not ego. He is truly a superlative human being and a more than seviceable poker player. I am not saying I would cross-book him with Ivey or Durr or anything, but underestimate him at your own risk. And I know there are a lot fewer people that would think I am an ******* if I acted more like him.
You can't be serious. Is he crushing the biggest NL games where you are? 10/20 or 25/50 or whatever you guys have there? If not, he will be absolute dogmeat in the HSP game unless he runs like he did in the WSOPs. Even if he is crushing them, he's likely never seen anything like what he's stepping into, except for what's been shown on tv.

I wouldn't. I mean, I'm not too bright, but I'm not THAT stupid as to just give away a hundred grand to a handful of degenerate gamblers.

So, yes, I type this as if it were fact because it is.

isn't there a difference between being properly rolled to play a particular game regularly versus playing a game once? People always argue how nobody is properly rolled for the game but it's not like they play the game every night. they play once and go home back to their regular limits. I don't think the roll has any relevance to participating on this show. they're taking a shot or investing in their own media time. whatever.

It's the internet and it's 2+2. people don't actually have to post with anything other than an opinion. no actual thought or research into how factual the statements really are must be made.

probably 10 or more years. He's not Patrick or Dwan so there are just no man crushes from the 2+2 crowd for Phillips.

From Wikipedia :

Quote:
In the 2009 World Series of Poker Phillips followed his third place finish by finishing 45th, winning $178,857. His back-to-back top 50 finishes set a new two-year WSOP record for number of opponents outlasted at 13,378 -- 6,494 in 2009 and 6,884 in 2008.
2 Year Record, Not overall just over 2 Years.

I can't vouch for Dennis Phillips' cash game prowess, but he is a 5/10 live regular in St. Louis. Obviously 5/10 live is a lot different than 100/200+, but I think there is a decent possibility that he knows the difference b/t cash and tournament strategy.

I also think Phillips' TAG style may work against the hyper-aggressiveness of a Durrr if he can find the right spot to trap.

Dennis Philips not a cash game donk!?!?!?!?

So I guess "FOLD EQUITY" is not an important concept that should be fundamental knowledge to anyone playing cash games then, lol.

haha. this reminded me of the PAD cash game where Hellmuth went on that rant about trying to trap Durrrr for 4 hours.

And Lederers TAG style really worked well against him last season.

Dennis will do fine with his straight forward poker style.
His style can win anywhere anytime.

I hope Dennis recognizes and capitalizes on the stereotypical image that he is a nit. The guy is a survivor (see his last 2 WSOP ME runs) and he adapts to the situation. Perception IS reality and Dennis knows this.
hahahha

In televised hands between Hellmuth and Durrr, Hellmuth has so far been by far the winner and has outplayed Durrr.
