Probably 50-50 between people buying in for 200-300, and people buying in for 500-600 at 2/5, IME. You will not get to play 200bb+ deep most of the time, unless it's a long session and multiple people have stuck around long enough to build up stacks. With that in mind, I think the optimal approach is a mostly value-oriented game, as I don't think the games are active enough or deep enough to really reward LAG play.
Just be aware of table conditions and adjust accordingly (e.g. table full of old nits = stab a lot but avoid big multi-street bluffs because they probably have the nizzles, while table full of weak-passive recreational players = focus more on value-town). Games are (very generally speaking) more passive than 2/5 games in Vegas, less preflop 3bet squeezing, less raising with semi-bluffs/draws, etc. It seems to me that there's a general culture among a lot of the average players to default to just calling a lot with medium but "pretty" hands postflop (i.e. AA/KK, combo draws, TPTK, etc.), and then console themselves with a lot of complaining when they miss draws/get outdrawn/taken to value-town. It's like they're more interested in getting sympathy for their perceived unluckiness, rather than maximizing profit or minimizing losses. Also, bet-sizing tells are pretty common, and most players' betting patterns aren't very sophisticated or balanced.
There's usually like 2 decent players at most at a full 10-handed game; a lot of the time there's 0 (assuming you're playing at peak hours like 6pm-2am or something... though afternoon and super late night games aren't bad either). NLHE has just not been around in FL for very long, and the average skill level/analysis capabilities of people is still seriously under-developed.
I've only been playing a lot these past 2 months, so maybe these impressions are off, but for the most part, everything you've heard about these soft games is true.
Thanks for this. I will take your advice and jump right into 3-5 with 80bb, 60bb, 60bb shots.
I played at San Manuel in Calfornia when it was a new room; I think it must have been a similar environment; although maybe more extreme in Florida.
Not sure if off-topic, but can you/someone comment on 1/3 games in the area? It makes sense to me the 1/3 is over-competitive at THR compared to the 1/2 and 2/5; but maybe another cardroom close to their has 1/3 as their main game?
At this point I'd prefer full buy-in 1/2(3) than 2/5 assuming similar levels of softness.
I'm also curious if there is any chance I'd be able to get access to the gym/spa there without getting a room? -- EDIT I see they have a 35/day access fee which is pretty steep; I wonder if they'd work with me for month long access.
