Oh and unless I'm forgetting, was there really just 1 zombie this whole episode (excluding the sister)?? The only one I remember is the one that got arrow'ed outside the CDC. Couldn't believe on their whole road trip they didn't see any.

edit: Fly beat me to this a few posts up. I understand the need to develop characters/plot but c'mon.

One thing I really liked about the original Dawn of the Dead was how Romero made it abundantly clear that no matter where you were (city, suburb, rural area) zombies were going to be there. At every single moment, zombies were a threat. Yet, in this show somehow large portions of highways and other roads are completely free of any signs of humanity (living or dead). It simply doesn't feel like the heroes are in any significant danger, unless they choose to put themselves in it.

I doubt we will see this because it doesn't make for good TV. There was a book I read (can't remember the name) where people who ventured outside (of their fortress town) wore anti-bite suits made of old carpet, covered themselves in 'essence of zombie' to mask their smell, etc.

Do we really want to see people wandering around in carpet, leather chaps, motorcycle helmets, covered in goo (we already have SOA)? Once you go there, logically, you can't really go back. The only real arguments against armoring yourself would be mobility, ie, giant packs of slow zombies where if you are grappled you will be overwhelmed. We see this to a degree in the show, but certainly if you take the example of the attack on the camp, 'armor' would have been very effective.

There is plenty of ******ed writing going on here (which is sad), but I don't think this particular case applies.

right, I understand that they have to keep up appearances and can't just let the heroes slay a predominantly African Zombie American horde. it was more of a minor nitpick made in jest.

fwiw I just assumed it was part of the director's vision; that he wanted us to think Atlanta's black residents were able to outrun/outjump their would-be zombie fates at a much higher rate than the rest of Atlanta's slower, grittier residents and that's reflected in the zombie population we see in the show.

as for episode 5, I enjoyed it more than the past couple, but have mostly the same criticisms that were already listed earlier.

- another gun nitpick for Fly: when old blonde sister points the gun at Grimes, they add in the sound of the slide being racked to let us know she meant business. At least there was a visible safety, though.
- no h0mo, but wtf was up with the CDC guy's torso. dude seemed irregularly shaped.
- Grimes's wife is so ****ing awful. she's intended to be the "hot" one, but is average as hell. her character is an irrational, raging bitch, but not even a well-portrayed one because her acting is terrible. I hate how her son looks like a children of the corn extra, too.
- the show needs more Lennie James as soon as possible.

also, agree very much with how ******ed it is that Grimes is still wearing his deputy getup. lol at "they found the hatch" too, was my exact thought about that total ripoff scene.

what is the hatch reference for those of us who don't watch Lost?

There's a hatch on the island. A locked door is discovered at the end of season 1 and blown open, this is the main storyline in season 2.

Inside the hatch there is also a man alone, who is going stir crazy, he is also labouring at a computer in what may be a futile exercise but may also be saving the world. He is also not sure whether he is the last man alive.

There are really a ton of similarities to Lost on this show. (The conflicted leader bland main character, ragtag band of survivors living in fear, two alpha males feuding over a kind of annoying brunette, characters randomly having unexplained powers like the ability to divine the future, the hatch, ...)

One thing that Lost had that this show doesn't however is flashbacks. Obv it would be a huge mistake to make them as central as they were in Lost, but a look at these people before the outbreak would help, I think, cure the problem of the characters sucking.

The reason Sayid became more than a former Iraqi soldier, Jin became more than a sexist asian guy or Charlie became more than a druged up rock star was the flashbacks gave them depth. Again, not saying I'd want to see parallel storytelling like Lost, but some background would help imo.

thanks, lol thats ridiculous.

I am still having the hardest time believing that the military lost to these ****ing zombies. These aren't "I am Legend" zombies that are ridic fast and strong. These are lumbering dope lean zombies that seem rather easy to kill.

I think Russia is another extremely likely candidate for a country who could withstand this. They have so many people and their country is so damn big and cold. Think of all those isolated military bases. Odds are SOME of them will survive the initial onslaught then they're fycking Golden since there's not enough zombies to pose a threat to them in rural areas.

I just don't like the idea that this show implies that every military institution failed. They had enOugh bullets to kill 500k people in Ww1. With today's technology and a legit stronghold then walking biters don't pose that much of a threat even in large numbers.

They're decision to let the guy free to turn into a zombie struck me as weird, I was hoping at least one person would point out that if they did that they would be responsible for another killing machine in the world, and anybody he ate would be on them

Friend of mine pointed out they probably will go back to find him to give Mister Scientist his live tissue samples.
Now, I don't know what live tissue samples are but odds are it's from infected but still human beings right?
And would explain why writers didn't want to guy killed (but they could have solved that by giving him a gun for suicide, just don't let him use it)
Made sense to me.

MOD NOTE- I'm taking this out of spoiler text. There's no reason to hide speculation like this and I think it's easier if we only use spoiler text for actual spoilers and pictures of Ninja Turtles.

Grunching from Episode 4:

I think it's funny that the Latino gang member who was shot with the arrow has been type cast as a Latino gang member who endures an ass injury in an alley.

Spoiler:
Bruce Almighty

Also, one reason the survivors might have set up camp where they did instead of finding some sort of structure could be the proximity to food and water.
