I'm going to say it again. It is a farce that people who have traded away all their picks and prospects get 7 or 8 free picks at the end of the draft to replenish their farm systems every year.

Last edited by Ludovic Banhammer; 03-21-2014 at 12:29 PM. Reason: That isn't aimed at the people who have the picks. It's the rule I have a problem with.

Why do you think it's a farce, and what do you think the rule should be instead?

I like that there are a few different approaches to this league. Plus, it won't play out in favor of teams who rape their systems in the long term; this is a very short term play, and I'll be donating money soon enough.

I think the rule should be that if you trade away your picks you don't get any replacement picks, and if you empty out your farm, then you don't get extra bonus picks to help you refill it. I have no problem with people trading away picks/prospects. I just don't think you should get free stuff as a reward for doing so. I mean, if you pick wisely, in a year's time you will probably have 4-5 decent prospects from your 8 free picks, and you get the benefits from trading away the original picks.

Yeah, I don't know...I see the extra compensation as not solely the benefit of the teams selling picks and prospects. I know for me the compensation picks make it easier to give up a pick or prospect because I will get a chance to replace a portion of that value in addition to the return in the trade. If those compensation picks go away, the return I would need for picks/prospects would increase. So in that way - lowering the acquisition cost of prospects/picks - teams looking to build their minors benefit, too.

I do see how it gives a commodity to teams that start the draft with less than 5 guys in their minors. Basically makes trading your 5th pick in that situation mandatory. But i'm not so sure it's a problem.. just a strategic decision. And like fifield said, it's basically included in the market price of said picks/prospects. and when teams irl trade away their top prospects, it's not like they're just stuck having no one in the minors.. they play the numbers game with worse prospects.

worth noting that teams that do this are capped at having 10 in the minors, while others can get up to 20.

anyway, worth talking about if others would like it changed.

I'll pick: Wilmer Flores

Yeah, I don't really worry too much about this. The value of a 2nd-round draft pick, say, is the value of a 2nd-round pick mins the value of a supplemental pick. If we didn't have the top-up-to-10 rule, then it's just the value of a 2nd-round pick. So it devalues higher picks. I'm pretty apathetic about it. If anything, I kind of agree with Fifield that it makes the draft picks a more swappable commodity.
