So Rookie draft probably starting tomorrow?

Sounds it. Also, since we've got people organized, probably time to set a deadline for major-league roster cuts. We'll want to get the auction started before too long. March 11, maybe?

Cool, I'm ready to put mine in, might as well. Maybe both were intended, I dunno, I just sent minor-league cuts. But we should set a deadline.

Two auction-based questions:

1) Can we drop players during the auction?

2) If a player is on the DL, or clearly going to begin the season on the DL, can we put that player on our DL and free up the roster spot?

The answer to both is "no", in my opinion, but wanted to be certain.

we allowed cuts during auction last year and i think it was messy, i think it's definitely a no this year. the DL quesiton is closer, it sorta would make sense, but i think i'd say no there too - could be convinced otherwise if people speak up.

The only problem is who decides if a player is going on the DL or not for this. There are a load of players who might/should/will start on the DL but teams won't DL them until very close to opening day, so there's no way of knowing who really will start on the DL.

Yeah that's why I figured no. And I definitely agree with the no on dropping in the auction.

In the instance an MLB level player making more than the league minimum ($4) is cut mid-season, picked up on waivers by a new team, and retained through the next round of pre-auction active roster cuts: the player’s salary will revert to either his original salary prior to being cut or remain at the winning waiver wire bid – whichever is greater. Yearly salary bump rules still apply.

When it was first brought up, there was a general consensus to implement something like this. The issue is how little should a player's salary be for such a rule to kick in? I think it should be higher than $4, because that would affect way too many waiver pick-ups. Maybe something more like $25 or even $50?
The rule should be unnecessary, because people should be paying attention and bidding on anyone prominent who gets dropped, but I understand that not everyone follows every week. But yeah, I definitely think the min salary for this should be pretty high; it's a special exception. $50 sounds quite reasonable, actually.

I'd suggest that's amended to being half the previous salary rather than the whole salary. That seems a reasonable compromise that still makes it worth paying attention to the waiver wire. Also agree that the cut-off should be high. $50 is fine.

1) is a definite no.

2) I don't think we have an official rule on this yet. At first pass, I'd lean towards letting players who are already on the DL from last year and will be this year, stay on the DL. Guys who got Tommy John last season are a common example. So those guys wouldn't count against your total roster size, but they obviously still count against the cap and take up a DL spot.

As far as guys who get hurt in spring training and will be out for a while, I think the safest thing would be to defer to whatever espn's designation is. That closes it off from speculation (the team says he's hurt, but he's not on the DL. How hurt does he have to be before we decide he's eligible, etc.).

Full disclosure: I have an example of each on my team. Danny Duffy - on DL since last season with TJ. Granderson - broke his arm in ST, not on the official DL.

So I think we agree that we need an official source for figuring out who is on (or going to be, as you say) on the DL. If I go to ESPN's rosters, and look at the Yankees, they have Brad Meyers and A-Rod on the DL. What I don't know is if this is a hold-over from last year, or whether it's for this year, if it's official, what. If they're on the DL now, I think it makes sense to say they can be on our DL prior to the start of the auction. But if it's speculative, and we have to make judgement calls . . . that's not ideal.

Yeah, A-Rod's status - according to MLB.com - is 60-day DL. I think it's reasonable to say that he can go onto the DL once we've made our cuts, freeing up the roster spot. It doesn't seem to be easy to search by status, but I'm happy to leave it to owners to declare their guys on the DL, and leave it at that.

Granderson and Duffy both active, BTW. So maybe it's a holdover from last season. But I dunno, as much as we know that Granderson will start the season on the DL, I think we need a third-party designation, no?
