Thank you! I've picked up a couple tips here and there recently and have definitely noticed an improvement in my ball striking. Hitting greens goes a long way to lowering scores. And I also have to give credit to my improved putting. Picked up an Odyssey ProType Tour 9 putter and put a Super Stroke Slim 3.0 grip on it and honestly I have noticed such a difference on my feel for putts. Golf grind on the mind!!

Played well! Shot 80* - my best round of the season although missed a birdie putt on 18 to go sub 80 for the first time since last July or August.

*See hole 10

Played the blue tees at 6580 yards, 70.5/129

Hole 1 -392 Par 4 - Pulled a nasty tee ball left into a fairway bunker leaving 190. Took 7 iron (should have played more conservatively as I almost hit the lip. My third was from 100 and I put it pin high and took two putts from 15 feet. Bogie.

Hole 2 - 583 yard Par 5 - Hit a solid driver down the right side (scary as there is water on the right if you don't hit it well). My second shot was a 3h - laid it nicely to 79 yards. Hit my wedge a little firm and ended up long and left of the pin, with 18 or 20 feet down the hill for birdie. Rolled it 4 feet past (on the low side ) and missed the come-backer for a frustrating bogey.

Hole 3 - 400 yard straight away par 4 - bunkers about 200 out in the fairway (right side). Hit a good drive over and left of the bunkers and left 135 in. Fanned a wedge high, short and right. Left myself short-sided to a slightly elevated green. Barely chipped on and had 13 feet to save par. No dice. Bogie #3 in a row.

Hole 4 - 173 yard par 3 - had 165 flag and tugged an 8 iron into a green side bunker. Rolled up the back of the bunker so I had a side-hill/down-hill-ish terrible bunker shot. Did well to get it out of the trap and it rolled across the green settling against the collar. Had 28 feet and managed to 2 putt. Bogey.

Hole 5 - 270 par 4. It was 277 to the flag (back left). Cool hole - water on the right that wraps the front of the green. Bunker left of the green and a bail out area long left of the flag. Plenty of fairway to lay-up and leave 100 yards. I'm on pace to shoot 90+ so I take the drive and play my cut from the left trap and luckily hit the green and it stays. I have 30 feet for eagle! Gave it a good shot, missed on the high side and got it past the hole without blowing it past so I was very happy to make birdie!

Hole 6 - 522 yard par 5. A good drive would have allowed me to go for it in two but I slightly pulled my 3-wood and ended up in the left rough. A solidly struck 7-iron left me with 60 yards. Again a little too much on my wedge and I flew it past the hole and had 28 feet back down for birdie. I hit a decent putt, but missed on the low side and made a 3 foot come-backer for par.

Hole 7 - 445 yard par 4. This hole is called "the carry" as the tee is on the edge of a cliff and it makes for a fun driving hole. Fairway bunker left side of the fairway at 255, OB left and the hole dog-legs left to the green. So lots of room right, but with the downhill I aim to play it over the bunker, especially as my driver typically pushes, cuts, slices. Hit a great drive and had 150 to a centered and relatively easy pin. Pushed my 9 iron but had plenty of green to work with and was able to get up and down, making an 8 foot putt straight up the hill. Par.

Hole 8 - 122 yard par 3. Had 126 to a left flag. The Roaring Fork river comes pretty close to the green and its definitely only a few yards to OB from the left edge. I had a gap-wedge in my hand but still didn't feel comfortable after tugging the last par-3 tee ball. Aimed at the center, pushed it, caught it a little fat and ended up on the front right, 60 feet to the hole. Lagged it nicely, it settled 3 feet past the cup and I made it for another par.

Hole 9 - 415 yard par 4. Fun tee shot and I'm sad I didn't get a picture; it's uphill to a blind landing area, but you aim between two mountains that stick above the horizon. Pushed my drive a little and didn't realize that favoring the left peak is the ideal play I ended up in the right rough kinda through the fairway, 153 yards out. Had a side-hill, down-hill lie and chunked it badly. Luckily the green is well down hill so I had 35 or 40 yards to get up and down, plenty of green to work with. No touch! Landed my pitch pin high and it rolled out to 25 feet. 2 putts for a bogie.

Out in 40. 4 straight bogies to start, but kept it together.

Hole 10 - 349 yard par 4. The asterisk hole. The hole plays as a 456 yard par 5 from the tips. Across the river tee shot looks to be truly special. But in the spring (from opening until the end of June) the hole isn't open. A mating pair of bald eagles has built their nest on a tree just across the river from the tee box. There are currently 3 eaglets that are getting very close to being able to fly.

Google photo of the nest (couldn't find one that shows the course):

So the hole is the 14 handicap; my 10.2 handicap translates to a 12 course handicap, and I will mark down a par, assuming I understand how the handicap thing works when you play more than 13 hole and not all 18.

Hole 11 - 184 yard par 3. Had 186 to the flag, helping wind and leaving it short has some nasty bunkers. Nuked an 8 iron (swung it well and had a very nice wind going) and hit it over the green to a closely mown collection area. First pitch ended up at the top of the hill (almost came back to my feet) but my second chip rolled tight to 3 inches. Bogey.

Hole 12 - 613 yard par 5. Plays 662 from the tips and is a great hole. Straight away, water on the right to the second shot landing area and a creek that cuts diagonally in front of the green. Hit a poor drive off the toe but it ended up on the fairway, right side. Miles to go to the end of the fairway so I unloaded my 3h toward the left side of the fairway. Good shot there left me exactly 100 to the pin. Plenty of green to work with but instead I try to be too cute and hit it over the green (probably 8-10 yards over the flag). Had a decent lie but was short sided. Hit a good chip, landed it on the fringe and it rolled out to 3'. Made the putt and saved par.

Hole 13 - 406 yard par 4. A very good drive left me 151 out. Fanned, short and right again with the 9-iron. A poor pitch to 16 feet and I missed a tough downhill putt and made bogey.

Hole 14 - 137 yard par 3. Had 143 and could see that were some severe slopes on the green. I misjudged what was actually happening and hit it about 10 yards short of my yardage and had to putt up to the next tier. I have great vision but I guess I just didn't pay close attention and assumed it was a front pin when it was more center :-/ 2 putts from 26 feet and I get out with a par!

Hole 15 - 293 par 4. Bunker protecting the green but it's rip-city. Pulled it a little and ended up left of the bunker and in a collection/bail out area. Had 50 yards from my angle and plenty of green to a back pin. Hit a terrible chip and it ended up rolling down a slope leaving me 42 feet up hill. Lagged it nicely and got out with another par!

Hole 16 - 359 par 4. Straight forward. Bunkers 275 out into the wind. Somehow talked myself into hitting 3-wood (I barely hit driver 275 so meh), snap hook OB. FML I was playing really well and had a decent chance of bettering my best round ever (+6). Tee off 3 and stripe the 3-wood, leaving 135. Hit wedge over a bunker guarding the pin and am barely on the green, 30 feet to make a bogey. Gave it a good effort but missed and made double bogey.

Hole 17 - 397 yard par 4. Ended one set of tees back as we weren't paying attention (425), but ripped a great drive down the right center of the fairway. Had a great angle and 148 yards to a left back pin. Hit 9-iron hole-high, 25 feet right of the flag. Blew my first putt 6 feet past but regrouped and slid the par putt in the side door. Par.

Hole 18 - 524 yard par 5. With a natural island green. Driver down the left center of the fairway left me 235 in. It's downhill and there is a lot of green left of the flag, a bunker center and a lot of room right. Hit 3h and was aiming for the left side of the green. Pushed it, barely covered the creek and ended up 20/25 yards short/right of the flag. Need to hit over the edge of the bunker and don't have much green to work with as the putting surface narrows in the back-left where the pin is. Hit a bad pitch and it barely trickles onto the surface. 16 feet for birdie and 79. Great speed; missed on the low-side though. Par.

In with a 40. My best round of the season so far. Felt great to hit a lot of good shots. Snap hook on 16 was dumb, but whatever.

I am playing 2 charity tournaments at this course this week. I should be able to help my scramble teams quite a bit. Also get to play a stroke play tournament here at the end of the month - can't wait.

Played River Bend Country Club in MA today.

Blue Tees 69.9/125 6312

Hole 1 - 342 yards Par 4. Trouble about 250 out, so used 3w to 150 out. Skulled my 7I luckily it got thru the ****, and up onto the rough about 10 yards short of the green. Very thick rough, it was a full 56 or 60 swing just to move the ball all day. Used my 56 to about 10 feet, 2 putt. Bogey

Hole 2 - 471 yards Par 5. Duffed my driver about 15 yards. 3w to about 150 out. 7I to about 20 feet. 2 putt. Par

Hole 3 - 317 yards Par 4. No room for error on this hole. I have not been hitting my driver good at all, but being a former baseball player, I am convinced I can hit my way out of it. Instead of using 3w or 4I here, I opt to use driver. I top it left into the high thick weeds. Try to hit a 4I out of the weeds it goes about 4 feet. 4I again onto the fairway leaving me about 210 out. Huge over hanging tree in front of me. I hit a 3H stinger about 3 feet off the ground onto the fringe. Hit a good pitch, but it hit the flag stick and rolled off. 2 putt. Triple Bogey

Hole 4 - 134 yards Par 3. Still frustrated after the last hole, I hit a fat 9I to about 50 yards out. SW to about 10 feet. Burn the edge on my putt. Tap in. Bogey

Hole 5 - 368 yards Par 4. Hit a nice drive down the middle to about 169 out. 5I left of the green. Thought it was a down hill chip, so I hit 60 degree flop shot, and it didn't roll out. 2 putt. Bogey

Hole 6 - 373 yards Par 4. Water to the left. Left is where you want to be to shorten the hole. Finally hit my driver well, hit it left side of the fairway to about 141 out. Pin in the back water ahead, wind swirling. I hit the best 7I I have ever hit, but unfortunately it had a draw on it, and it put me in the thick rough 20 feet from the pin, but pin high. This rough was like cabbage, I literally could not get a club on this ball. Thought about chipping with my putter, but instead I used my 56 and chickened out, slowing my swing down, and hit it about 2 feet but on the green. 2 putt. Bogey

Hole 7 - 389 Yards Par 4. This was unfortunate hole. I finally pipe a drive, water is 265 out down the left, and that's exactly where I hit it. Took a drop, 140 out 7I into the weeds atop a bunker. Really weird lie. Swung like a baby, it went 2 feet. Chipped on, and 1 putted. Double bogey.

Hole 8 - 200 yards Par 3 uphill. Use 3W ended up 30 yards short of the green in the thick rough. Trying to pitch up, I skull the ball across the green, chip on, and it is a severe downhill putt. Blow past the hole. 2 putt. Triple Bogey.

Hole 9 - 381 Yards Par 4. Hit another decent drive down the left this time it catches the fairway bunker about 165 out. I am looking at a shot out of the bunker from 165, pin in the back, uphill. I opt for my TaylorMade Rocketballz 3H, and hit the shot of my life to about 3 feet, and tap in for a 3. Birdie

Front 9 - 46

Hole 10 - 390 yards Par 4 - Pipe my drive left side of the fairway to about 135 out. 8I to about 20 feet. 2 putt. Par

Hole 11 - 350 yards Par 4 - Another hole where laying up is optimal. Hit a 60% 3W to about 180 out. I should have went 4I off the tee. 180 out, I hit my 4I fat and it rolls up barely staying out of the swamp. Have an awful lie in some kind of a ditch. Hit a PW to about 30 feet. 3 putt. Double Bogey

Hole 12 - 387 Yards Par 4 - Snap hooked my drive into the woods, hit a tree and kicked out into the rough with a low overhanging tree. 240 out. Used a hooded 3w to about 50 yards out. 8I bump and run. 2 putt. Bogey

Hole 13 - 341 Yards Par 4 - Dog leg left. 3w to 115 out. PW to about 15 feet. 2 putt. Par

Hole 14 - 191 Yards Par 3 - 4I left side of the green pin high. This was a weird lie because I was chipping up onto a two tiered green. My choices were 60 degree flop shot let the ball just die next to the pin if I hit it good. Or use an 8I and hit it into the hill, and have it roll towards the flag. I hit the 8I but didn't hit it left enough, and it left me a 20 foot putt that I barely missed for par. Tap in. Bogey.

Hole 15 - 383 yards Par 4 - Snap hooked my drive into the woods left. Took a drop, and duffed my 3w to about 130 out. Grabbed the wrong club. Had a 7I so I just choked down hit the green. 2 putt. Double Bogey

Hole 16 - 551 yards Par 5 - At this point I know I need to shoot +1 to break 90. Dog leg left. Because I have been snap hooking my drives, I aim right, and of course this time my ball stays straight hits a hill and goes into the woods. I take a drop. 3w to about 75 yards out. Funny thing is I just worked on hitting my 75 yard shot at the range. I was pinpoint accuracy. Well unfortunately I was this time too. I hit the flagstick and it rolled back off the green leaving me on the front edge about 15 feet. 2 putt. Bogey.

Hole 17 - 178 Yards Par 3 - 4I - Hit a nice fade leaving me 10 feet from the pin. Uphill right edge putt. Didn't hit it hard enough and it broke under the hole. Tap in. Par

Hole 18 - 566 Yards Par 5 - I need to par this to break 90. Driver pulled left into the cluster of trees, but somehow makes it thru into the thick rough leaving me with absolutely no real shot. I use my 4I. I aim almost 45 degrees to the right of where I want the ball to go. Completely close the club face, and swing as hard as I can, and it's a nice low Bubba hook right down the fairway leaving me 145 out into the wind, uphill. I hit a 6I here, but put too much of a fade on it, and it left me in the thick rough, front side of the green, with no way of hitting this shot. I was too afraid to try to hit a full 60 degree shot which is what it required, so I did my best. 2 putted. Bogey

46-44 - 90

Tough day off the tee, my course management could be much better. My positives is that I am not letting bad holes ruin my entire round. I am taking a deep breath, stepping back, and just trying to make another good shot. I still suck, but at least when I have a bad day, I can manage to get in the low 90's now.

Wasn't comfortable with the shot it required, and didn't feel like taking a 9 if I skulled it over the green. That wasn't where I lost my shots. I left a lot a shots out there, and I am confident that next time I will be in the mid to low 80's.

Front 9 was pretty good (started with 3 straight pars).
Back 9 I had one huge blow up hole (lost 3 balls and shot a 10!)

Bright side: I only had 29 putts! but that's also a function of me holing out on 3 chips from the fringe today.

Saturday - 90 at Hockley Valley. Kind of a strange course with no bunkers anywhere but "grass bunkers" literally everywhere. My first putt percentage was totally **** where I barely had the ability to get the ball 70% of the distance to the hole therefore 3-putting somewhere in the realm of 5-8 times in one round.

Sunday - 89 at Eagle's Nest. I hit some great shots and hit some bad shots; also 3-putted a few times which seems to be my miss of the month. A couple of highlights was a 200 yard 4-iron approach to #3. Somewhere on the back 9 I had 170 to a back-left pin with a hook wind and I normally play a draw with my irons. Somewhere in my head I heard Nick Faldo commentating and he said "he should probably play a fade into this hook wind" so I did and I played it to perfection to about 7 feet and then missed the birdie again.

New career low.

41-44 - 85

Started off the back nine with a group telling us to play through. And of course while they are all watching I shank 2 shots and take a double bogey, which led to a not so great back 9.

10 pars
3 bogeys
5 double bogeys
