GHIN needs to develop a separate handicap for betting, ha. I agree, with certain games it gets messy.

It's just messy anyway. My monthly team play team has a player who's a +4 (from the tees we play....his GHIN is +1). It's frustrating that he has to birdie the par 3s to make a par, and even though they're the 16-18 handicapped holes, they are NOT easy birdies (two are 180+ yards, one with one of the nastiest greens around; need a perfect drive to hold the green).

I play as a +4 usually at my course when we gamble, and if I'm playing someone I'm giving say fewer than 7 or 8 shots to, I don't mind playing basically the differential, but the more shots I'm giving the more I'm going to be an underdog.

I wouldn't want to give more than like 80% of handicap if it's a match play format. If you're playing a net skins game with high handicaps, I wouldn't want to give more than like 40% of handicaps.

One of the biggest differences between plus golfers and like a 15 handicaps is that I make very few bogeys. I could go shoot a -2 70 with 3 birdies and 1 bogey, have the 15 handicap shoot a 93, and I could lose 4 down because he'll make 7 doubles/triples, and then a ton of net birdies.

If we were going to play stroke play, then 100% of handicaps is fair... but that's not how gambling almost ever works.

I prefer not to gamble with anyone over like a 4 handicap.

I have tried googling and cant find anything that backs this up. Is he talking out of his ass or is this common practice?
Is he a legit 5 or a vanity 5

Few guys i play with regularly have a game with 6 individual bets. Great for 1v1 and 2v2 matches

Front/back/overall stroke and match.
Loser automatically gets half a shot next game.
Great for finding fair line assuming one guy/team isnt a crazy amount better than the other.

I like this idea. My weekly game has a bunch of $2 nassaus going and there's one I guy I can just never beat, even when I shoot decent. He's a 14, I'm a 6. Tired of giving him $6 every week, ha.

One bunch of guys I used to play with would play "$x a side; adjust at the turn." Number of strokes given according to handicap. Match play.

The high handicapper never got additional strokes on the back, but if he won the front by two holes or more (numerous presses could be involved but didn't figure into the adjustment), the # of strokes he got on the back was reduced by half the number of holes he won on the front.

It usually worked out pretty fairly.

I play on a fairly easy golf course, I'd like the idea of actually playing vs people. I was wondering if the following would be fair.

I'm a 11 HC and I normally play in either a 3 or 4 ball, The guys I play with are like 20+ HC. If I said to them they all team up vs me in a match play style but they get to play better ball would this be fair or would I still need to give them all shots?

it's worth defining 'better ball' because i've heard it used in different ways. are you suggesting each of them play their own ball from start to end and your score is compared to their best score?

Yeah in a scramble I would say you are still a dog. Best ball (your score vs their best score individually) it would be closer but I still think you would be a dog.

When I was preparing for tourneys I used to play me vs the 3 others best ball. They were (3 of 4 would play) 10, 12, 13, and 20 at the time when I was a 1. It was pretty even.

Yeah sorry, My score vs their best score.

I just find it gets a little boring around the course I play regularly. I do try and do my best every time I'm out on the course to shoot as low as I can. So making it a bit more competitive with the players I'm playing against would be good. I'm not a fan of the scramble format personally as I like to hit all my shots and I think they would do to,

May even get them to be a bit better and think about shots more.

Was 37 degrees, sunny, and quite windy at 7am. Tried walking on like I owned the place. 1st tee is about 300 yards from my truck. I get to the teebox to find an absence of tee markers. Figured that means no golf for me. Employee met me halfway back and he explained what I had figured out.

The morning basically went straight down after that, but not in a fun way like rollercoaster or ski mountain or luge etc.

Cest la vie. Good luck today.

Yikes. 83 here today and it's the first real day that I sweat on the course in several months. Humidity is not back yet, but this is a good taste of it.

My wife and I had a lesson yesterday and our instructor emailed me some videos. I need V1 golf program in order to view it. There is a link to download and it takes me to a page, but when I click on the link to download a free version my computer won't let me. Is anyone familiar with this program and if so do you know how I can view the videos? I asked the instructor, but he wasn't sure. He's not very tech savvy.

I just tried it and it worked for me. Try getting the app on your phone and see if that works.

Heading out for a lesson from a guy who was recommended by the best golfer I know. All I really want help with is my wedge game but the lesson will be inside using Trackman. Not sure if this is even worth it. We'll see.

Thanks. It turns out there's no desktop version, at least not a free one.

Lesson was interesting. He took baseline stats with me hitting 8 iron. The key points were that my swing path is way left, -9 degrees, but club face is open. That's why I can hit the ball straight with a divot path dead left of target. My swing is also very steep. So you combine everything and yeah, if all goes well I can hit a good shot, but the margin of error is tiny. And I'm really in trouble in wet, soft conditions which historically has been true.

So he got me to improve path, face, and steepness and I was flushing 'em. Only hit 6 and 8 iron for that portion.

At end hit like 10 drives. Again, too steep. He got me hitting up on the ball with a simple fix that I should be able to repeat.

It's interesting to see what the numbers tell you about your natural (bad) swing.

edit: he also had me transferring weight to left leg during swing as I leave it all on right leg and am basically falling away from target at impact

I havent been able to make a full weight transfer to left side since 2004. My focus has to be balance and stability while sacrificing power. Left hip and knee are my weakest links. The power is there in the muscles. Its the joints that suffered over the years resulting in much rotational instability over left hip, and a left knee dislocation in 2002 that I have to put in effort just to maintain baseline stability by lifting and doing controlled bodyweight exercises.

This is how I overcame terrible sciatica, left lumbar seizure, glute medius seizure, and all the resulting imbalances that came full force between 2005 and 2010.

Now at least I can walk a course with a bag and play a round without pain. I dont think left side will ever be fit for a full shift. I deal.

That's one of the many beautiful things about golf, you don't have to have a perfect physique to (a) play decently and (b) enjoy it even if you don't play at a high level.

One of these days I'm going to take a lesson. It'd be great to have another set of eyes on my swing, especially if it's someone who actually knows what they are doing.

I didn't give much thought to the potential to get of daylight savings on the Federal level until an article just told me that under the current proposal Oregon would have 106 days per year where the sun doesn't rise until 8:00 am. That does NOT work for my early Saturday golf schedule.

So that's what #'s look like with positive face path, slightly negative face to path, and positive attack angle. That's exactly what my guy was trying to get me to at my lesson.

Totally meant to post that in the Misc thread and not the PGA Tour thread. Those numbers aren't quite tour-worthy
