Random question: are there like tons of 20 year olds around who dream to get good enough at golf to be on the senior tour eventually? I know I have no shot, just curious if this is a super common goal. Is it maybe doable for some?

Yeah there's plenty. Jordan Speith and Jason Day come to mind.

20 something year olds thinking about the senior tour which is like 25 years away seems pretty odd to me. Now I imagine quite a few 45 year olds who played in college or guys who crush the Mid Am might think that way.

I used to have a buddy that was like a +1 maybe 10 years ago. But he had even less of a resume than I did and I wasn't setting the world on fire.

He used to babble about stuff like senior tour, etc. One day we were having lunch after a good round and he starts again. Finally I'm like "what year did you graduate college?"

Him: 1992

Me: you know who we're all Americans in 1992?

Justin Leonard
Phil Mickleson
Tim Herron
Warren Schutte
Dean Pappas

The year before that it was

David Duval
Shawn Micheel
And several of the above

Not to mention 2nd and 3rd teamers, honorable mentions, etc

Good luck with that

Now if he was a 48 year old +2 I could totally see getting excited to be able to finally play US Sr Am

I'm 46, graduated in 1992, and have been as low as a +7 in the last year. I've got a non-zero shot when I turn 50 if I stay healthy simply because for some strange reason I've gotten a ton better over the last few years.

Courses on the Champions Tour are a little different, don't have to bomb it and the premium is on the scoring clubs. Why 57-year old Bernhard Langer can still dominate over guys like Kenny Perry or Vijay Singh.

Agreed. Though I will say it used to be arguably the hardest tour to get on since it's not necessarily set up to simply reward skill.

Not sure if changed but iirc final stage Q school was only 8 spots. Feel like it was changed 5-8 years ago but just don't recall specifics

It is a stupid hard tour to get on if you didn't play the PGA Tour. There are 5 spots in Q-school, up from 4 some years back! Only two stages though, first stage usually at 3 locations (Florida, Texas, California), then final stage.

These guys playing the PGA are making so much money I highly doubt they will play the senior tour. JJ Henry will probably be the best player on the tour when the time comes.

I'm surprised that no athletes have retired from baseball or hockey and found out they were great golfers. I know there are some that play better than scratch, but I would have thought that someone that what makes someone a great baseball player would factor in to golf.

Jimmy Key has given it a shot.

I thought Ken "Hawk" Harrelson had played briefly on the tour, but Wikipedia suggests I was mistaken. This is the only reference to golf I could find for him there:

After retiring from baseball, Harrelson competed in the 1972 British Open. He missed the cut by 1 stroke, shooting +11.

Yes, but still, having that elite level of athleticism, I think would translate over.

If that were the case I could be hitting close to .200 against major league pitching by spring training next year.

Rick Rhoden, a former Pirates pitcher, had three top 10s on the champions tour.

The reason you don't see any hockey players on the senior tour is because, if you had a decent hockey career, you can barely walk when you turn 50, much less play tour-quality golf.

I watched an interview with one of the highest-respected QB gurus and he mentioned some interesting analysis on the rotational elements of throwing a football for elite QBs and the similarities with the golf swing. He never met an elite QB who wasn't an above-avg golfer as a result. Name is slipping me at the moment but he talked about it on the Dan Patrick Show a few months back.

Same goes for baseball pitchers. John smoltz is supposed to be a great golfer.

It also helps when you work one day a week.

Sweet article and all, but pitchers don't "work once a week"
