so someone 6'-4" should use the same off the rack clubs as someone 5'-4"?

If you happen to be someone who needs clubs way off from standard length lie ect then it probably is worth it.

I'm probably this, but I think the lie angle on my club might be off enough that I'm not making crisp contact

clubs off the rack: what height are they ideal for?

Depends on your arm length too obviously.

I'd say with average arm length, 5' 10" , just guessing though.

I have a buddy who is 6'2" and is still playing the clubs he got off the rack. He's looking for a new set; if he get's fitted, how much longer would they generally be, if any?

I'm 6'4 but play standard length clubs. I have long arms though (36/37 sleeves on dress shirts).

As a complete observer, it seems that 5'10-5'11" seems to be the sweet spot for rack clubs.

I'm sure there are other factors too.

Is $350 too much to spend on a fitting?

If its 350 it better be full bag from putter to driver on top of the line software with pretty much every single shaft imaginable to try.

Considering you probably suck at golf, this isn't worth it.

It looks like the place I went to for a driver fitting charges $350 for a full bag fitting. This is in Downtown Chicago, so I imagine the prices to be a bit higher than what you could find elsewhere.

Has anyone tried coolclubs? http://coolclubs.com/index.html

Looks neat but it would be over $350 to do the whole bag.

I really need to either give up completely on eBay, just select buy it now or obscure items, or else upgrade my software game. Getting sniped in the last 60 seconds of an auction is annoying.

I got a full 2 hour fitting on a trackman by a young guy who knew everything about everything and it was free with a $1,000+ purchase of clubs.

It was done at a nice country club here, so maybe try calling some upscale clubs in your area for a similar deal.

This is the way to do it imo.

Another good option would be to buy a set that is a few years old but in great shape - then get trackman fitted and have quality shafts put in. I did the latter (sans trackman) for my old hybrids and couldn't believe the difference that it made.

I play Ping G20 irons right now and I like them. Don't really need to buy a new set right now, but wanted to make sure lie angle and shaft were compatible with my swing.

I mentioned this last year when I did my fitting, but don't feel obligated to buy a club that they fit you for. It's their job to sell you the newest model with the newest shaft, etc.

I got my spec sheet and did my own research. Found a TaylorMade from a few years ago with a shaft that had specs very close to what they fitted me for. I went to a local GolfSmith and snagged it off the rack for less than $30. The original club they wanted me to buy was > $1000 iirc.

When I did a fitting for my Titleist 910D2 driver, I went to a range that had a Titliest staffer with all the gizmos (trackman, switchable heads, etc). I paid him their going rate for the fitting which I believe was around $100. He did not pressure me at all to purchase from the course and in fact he advised me to go to golftown with his spec sheet to get a better deal.
fwiw, Titleist's full bag fitting ends up being $300 canadian or more.

I reenacted the US Open final this morning. After 3 presses against me on 18, I had a 10 foot downhill to win them all. I hit it a little too firm and blew it through the break and about 4 feet past. Missed the putt coming back to lose the hole outright. I suck.
