Played at Ruffled Feathers GC today in Chicago Suburbs. Home course of Depaul Univ. and just next door to Cog Hill.

What a treat.

What would be good set of irons for a mid to high handicapper, budget is probably £400 and under?

Thru 3 holes, Mike Weir is averaging 185.3 yards off the tee. He really needs to get in the gym and increase his flexibility and strength if he wants to compete.

MY coach apparently has a decent connect through Taylor-Made, and is offering his discount to me... Looking to replace my woods (D/3W/7w?) but not spend a ton ( Most likely going to look for 09/10 woods at discount prices + his discount)... Can anyone recommend to me any specific combo's or can give a quick TR of their setups using TM woods?

Thanks.

I checked out a book from the library (remember those things?) Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons. How good/useful is this book for a fairly new player (32hcp). I've only read the first fundamental (the grip) and he only talks about the overlap grip. I have always used the 1 finger interlock, but am certainly willing to change if it helps.

Hogan's book is a classic, one of the best of all time. I wouldn't say it's the easiest read (it has been a while since I've read it).

One thing to remember is that there isn't always just one way to do things. People teach the way they think is best. Grip is a great example. You can be successful overlapping, interlocking, baseballing it and even playing cross-handed. You need to find what works best for you. It's def worth trying overlap but even if you don't change there is still good stuff in there about how to position your hands etc.

btw please discount any advice offered by me b/c I suck.

The thing about this stuff is, you can play 36 on it in the afternoon and then take it home and just get stoned to the bejeesus belt.

Agreed. The grip is so personal and you should use what feels best. Tiger and Mcilroy interlock, and Mickelson and Kaymer overlap, and all are considered among the best in the world.

Everyone's hands are different, too. I've got pretty small hands and very thin fingers. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but it seems weird to say "this is how your hands should go on the club" like everyone's are the same shape and size.

I generally have a terrible short game* but I've noticed something unusual this year.

Over the last few rounds I've had a thought of 'the hands work together as one unit' and I've had some very good chips - except for ones where I actually close my eyes for some reason as I'm going forward. WTF.

When that happens I tend to hit the ground, flinch and scoop to compensate - the resulting shot always comes up short and if I've really done poorly it can result in a double hit.

I'm baffled as to why this happens. And I never would have imagined that "keep your eyes open dummy" could be a swing thought.

* it's not as terrible when I practice, especially when I'm studying Utley's book or Pelz. But that doesn't happen often enough.

Alright so I finished Hogan's book the other day and have been to the range twice and definitely am noticing a difference. In consistency/repeatability and quality. I kinda have a lot to think about/work on so it isn't all going to come together right away (or maybe ever!) but I'm really excited. The repeatability is really what I'm after. I don't have a goal of like shooting 79 or whatever - I just want to be able to stand up to the ball and have confidence in executing a shot that I feel like I'd take 9 out of 10 times.

I was doing a lot of things wrong though. Mostly, with both elbows, and also my back foot was open and I was getting too much rotation with my hips and not enough tension in my back. I also wasn't starting my hips forward with any delay between my shoulders. I also was not supinating my front wrist. In fact, I was probably pronating it. Some other minor things with the grip as well.

I am sticking with 1-finger interlock. Tried overlap and hate the feeling. I also don't position my feet exactly as he describes. I am doing the back foot straight and front foot 1/4 turn but that's it. My ball position is much closer to center than front like he suggests.

But today I got so excited I just started quietly laughing after some shots. I hit some 2is off the tee with at least a 1-club side wind right to left that looked like they carried 200 yards and straight. WTF. Hit like 10 in a row way out there with a nice trajectory and straight and it was like the wind did nothing to them. Not sure where they settled and the tees were at the very front of the range. But anyway these were shots I'd kill to hit out during a round. Really excited. I really want to get out and play a round but I think I will keep going to the range to get more stuff figured out before testing it all. I'm afraid if I get out on the course too soon I will revert to bad habits then get frustrated.
