Last week I decided to add to my gear (have a Meier Corda Move portable amp) and wanted a DAC -

http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconhdp/index.php

http://www.head-fi.org/products/nufo...usb-dac-preamp

Quote:
The Nuforce Icon HDP incorporates a full-speed USB DAC and full-function S/PDIF D/A converter, plus a headphone-amplifier circuit and preamp output. Supporting digital USB, S/PDIF in coaxial and 3.5mm optical (3.5mm) modes, along with an analog line input, the HDP's flexibility has been designed to accommodate all manner of audio devices.

So far it's pretty awesome.

For reference, Senns HD 580 and FLAC/256kbps+

I want to buy dre headphones after listening to them. I don't care if there are super better headphones out there. So now that we've established that, which dre headphones are best for your buck? I prefer headphones that cover my ears... no buds plz!
01-27-2011 , 10:37 PM
im in the same boat ceegee, i see the dres for 300 and for 400, but im trying to decide if there is something better for that kind of money but cant get a good response from anyone. i read the reviews on the Beyer Dynamic DT 880 AND Im leaning towards those unless someone buts in and tells me something better for the price, thx!

Denon AH-NC800

also looking hard into the denon's they have great reviews. can anyone help me decide! prefer closed back but the beyers say partially closed whatever that means, mostly gonna be using the headphones w a iphone and a laptop, anyone have an opinion on the Denons? im looking for big bass and comfort for the most part. help!!!

I had the DT880's 32ohm for a while, but with no good DAC or AMP. They were OKAY, but nothing I would ever want to listen to again actually. It doesn't have the same meat to the sound that a lot of the nicer headphones I've heard had.
01-28-2011 , 12:10 AM
what do u recommend in the 300 -350 dollar range grandma, u heard anything good about the denon? any other good brand im overlooking?

Just an FYI. I know like 10 poker players who have had Dre headphones break on them. So not just are they overpriced, but they aren't durable either.

At least the overpriced Bose POS ones were durable.
01-28-2011 , 02:19 PM
Yeah I've heard many good things about Denon. To be honest, no headphone is very good unless you have a nice source.

What will you be listening out of? Do you have an amp
01-28-2011 , 03:16 PM
I can guarantee I won't be making recommendations on Bose or Beats by Dre headphones, sorry.

I really like Denon stuff but I think Beyerdynamic>>>Denon.

Just buy an amp, well worth it.
01-28-2011 , 03:39 PM
my source is from a laptop and a iphone, mostly used for live poker. or just listening to music while grinding online. what amps do u recommend and how much do they normally cost. prolly leaning toward the Beyer Dynamic DT 880 Premium 32 OHM Headphones, since they 880's are partially open are they going to bother ppl on a live poker table or on a plane?
01-28-2011 , 04:01 PM
yeah. i wouldn't get open headphones for the table or a plane. won't be able to hear your music very well over the other noise, unless you turn it up, which means then it would bother others.

also, laptop -> amp will sound terrible, because the laptop sound quality is not very good. would need some sort of DAC to make it sound better.

have u considered a nice pair of IEM's?
01-28-2011 , 04:11 PM
what is DAC?

i really dislike the ear buds, prefer over the ear

so basically Beyerdynamic DT 770 is a good choice for what im looking for?

really dont know much about amps, if u could explain a lil id really appreciate it. thank u.

i really like the denon's but the reviews all claim the wire is too long, stiff and i dont like how the wire connects to both of the speakers rather than 1.

dac is converter that outputs sound from your computer.

dt770 is not a bad choice.

imo best choice is listen from a nice portable player like a sansa clip+ or maybe ipod or something with a pair of sennheiser px200-ii
01-28-2011 , 05:48 PM
digital audio converter... and not all dacs are created equal.
01-28-2011 , 05:51 PM
thanks for your help but i really want a high quality headphone and if i have to get a amp then i will do so, just dont know much about them

the ones u suggested sell for about 80 bucks, i want to spend around 200-350 on a really nice pair.

can u suggest something better than the Beyerdynamic DT 770 in that price range ? my main priorities are a nice strong bass and good comfort. thanks in advance
01-28-2011 , 05:55 PM
80 bucks does not mean it won't be a high quality setup...

anyway: www.head-fi.org

you'll get more answers there if u want

I completely agree... price has little to do with it once you reach around $100 or so.

another thing vvubanga... you should maybe think about the bass in terms of Balance, otherwise you can end up with cans that deliver nothing but bad bass even though it may be a lot of that bass in that hz range.

So which headphones should I be looking at for around 200$?

Something by Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic probably. Decide whether you want open or closed. Decide whether you want to use an amp or not. Then read pretty much any three pages of this thread.
01-29-2011 , 06:34 AM
I'm a headphones newb, but I'm assuming open headphones are like ear buds or anything that has your ear exposed? Is like headphones that cover my ear as I hate any headphones that falls out of your ear, and feel the quality is just better with "closed". Is this true?

im a headphones noob too but ive learned a few things from this thread and will try to explain the difference the best i can....actually open and closed basically refer to whether other ppl can hear your headphones while they are being played. ill give u an example of 2 diff kinds from beyerdynamic which is the company i will most likey be being from. these are closed headphones and would be used for airplanes or at a live poker table. an open pair would be used for use in your own home.

http://north-america.beyerdynamic.co...dt-770-m.html#

here are the open back design

http://north-america.beyerdynamic.co...t-880-pro.html

there are many other differences between open and closed but this is about all ive learned so far, altho ive heard that open headphones provide a much better over sound than the closed but i could b wrong, gl ceegee hope u find a good pair, all the reviews ive read on the beats by dre say they are poor durability and comfort, so im staying away from them and u should too.
01-29-2011 , 11:53 AM
Open have a superior sound stage, but you have to sue them in a controlled environment... closed back are much more noise isolating but are NOT as noise isolating as a well made IN EAR unit.
