Headphones!!!

Wasn't even sure what the difference in closed vs. open was, I googled it and no it's definitely not required. My headphones will only be worn while at my computer or in my room somewhere that is quiet.

I think SRH440 is your best bet... though Grado SR225 could be a good choice too. Problem with SR225 is that you might really love the Grado sound or really hate it. Another good choice but pretty expensive too is the Shure SE530, which is an inner ear monitor, not sure if you'd want that for home use. Comparatively for the price, SRH440 can't be beat.

Maybe just buy all three and sell the two you don't like

Or try to hook up with some audiophiles, headphone meets often happen, and you can audition many different headphones.

as an update to my last post.. after some research I kinda want circumuraul headphones.. now im tossing up between shure SHR840 and audio-tech M50..
So far its the M50 (like the look better also). both seem to go pretty cheap from reputable dealers on ebay..

I have beyerdynamic DT 990..Hard to find a pair with lower bass response at 5 Hz.
Only cons are the cord is pretty short and if you are flying or something people will think you are part of air traffic control.

Has anyone tried the Monster Turbines Gold?
05-07-2010 , 10:07 PM
Ok, I read the last 20 pages or so and I still don't know what non-in-ear Headphones I should go for. Tried the Sensheiser hd-448 and kinda liked it...

What do you guys use to go with your iPod and why did you go with these?
05-08-2010 , 06:02 AM
need more info than 'non in ear'.. what music, listening times, closed/open, how much isolation req, budget etc..

sennheiser HD25-1 II, shure SRH840 seem to get good reviews for all around closed portable for starters

Without an amp I would use Grado SR60i. $79.
Some find them uncomfortable because they rest on the ears.

See this is the problem. After reading a lot of this thread I kinda figured there is nothing like THE headphone that is a clear winner. A lot of guys here also have different motivations when they bought their headphones. That's why I don't think it is to useful to ask: "What do you guys think would be ideal for me?" but "What headphones do you use with your iPod and why are you happy with them".
It is the first time I'm looking into buying headphones and I absolutely have no clue what I want. The only thing I know is that I want to have good headphones when walking around
05-08-2010 , 08:51 PM
Simple questions brah... e.g. closed/open <--- do you care if people can hear what you're listening to?

this is ridiculous. do you really think there is going to be one golden headphone that does everything well?.. come on now. its like turning up at a clothes shop and being like "hey can you give me some clothes. dunno what i want. just something good"..

I'll have a look at these, hopefully I can find a place to try them out. I just recently heard that the Sensheiser 448 kinda sounds "weak" with Mp3 payers, so that would be huge minus. Do you know anything about the Grado sr 80i? It seems to be the updated version of the sr60?

I have a pair at my office; they are quite nice.

If I was getting it for use with a portable music player, though, I'd probably get something else.

If you have the coin, the Bowers & Wilkins P5s are pretty fantastic for a portable music player:

If you prefer in-ear, and have the coin, the Klipsch X10i's are amazing:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mp3-pla...e-x10i-review/

For a lot less money, the Klipsch S4is are damned amazing:

...enjoy.

I have some SR80s. they're great.
But from what I've read the SR60 is a better bet without an amp.

"the Grado SR60i, sounds great without a headphone amp, it doesn't improve much with one.
The Grado SR80i is just the opposite--
not quite up to snuff without a headphone amp, it snaps right into focus with one."

I can deeply recommend SR80
05-12-2010 , 05:47 AM
picked up a pair of audio technica m50s and sold them the same day.. they sounded good but are way too big for portable use.. I dont mind puffy cans but they are massive.. much bigger than they appear in pics..
now looking at getting senn HD-25-1ii instead..

Ok, an amp ist certainly nothing I want to be using, but check this:

"Grado says that the SR60is are fine to use with portable players. I agree—but only in a quiet place. Their sensitivity was a bit low for my iPhone (used without a headphone amp). In a reasonably quiet home setting, the volume levels achievable were perfectly adequate, but if you plan to listen on airplanes or in other noisy places, you'll want more volume—or, better, more isolation"

from: http://stereophile.com/headphones/gr...0i_headphones/

I might still go with these even though they are nearly twice the price in Europe (at least, what I found)

What grab my attention though on that page (whose review are very good imo) is the Phiaton Moderna MS 400. (249€ to 113€ of the grado)

"I was able to drive the MS 400s to greater levels than I could endure with just about any source I had, from an iPod Shuffle G1 to my iPod Classic G6. In fact, when I drove the Phiatons with the Cayin HA-1A headphone amplifier, they were so sensitive that I heard the tube rush of the Cayin's 6DJ8s at lower volume levels than I had with the harder-to-drive Sennheisers and AKGs."

Opinions?

Buy em used whatever you get, you'll save a lot of money. Check Head-fi.org

Also I've never heard of the Phiaton.

Actually I personally think the best advice for you right now would be to pick up a pair of Koss KSC-75. The more I delve into headphones the more I realize how good the KSC-75 are, not even considering they are only ~$15. They don't require amping either, and are quite small and portable. The ear clips can be a bit finicky but work well once you've figured it out.

^ Anyone else who is new to headphones in this thread should also pick up a pair of KSC-75 imo. Listen for a while then decide if you want more, this way advice will be much easier to give out.

Anybody know if these skullcandy's sound like **** or not?

I think they look pretty awesome, way better than the Beats By Dre, obviously if you're going the headphones-endorsed-by-rappers route. I know some of the other SC's sound awful, and are basically just a gimmick, wondering if these are the same.

Headfi is having their CanJam International Headfi Meet in Chicago from June 5-6th. Has anyone been to this before? I want to see whats out there. Thinking about making a trip to see my Chicago friends before bailing to Vegas for summer.

Sent my Dre Studios and Tours back and Amazon confirmed today that the refund is going through which is nice.

I've never been but I highly recommend it. Everyone I've talked to said it's the best way to figure out what to buy. I'd do some research though about different headphones and such, and what you might want to get.

Personally I would also really want to try the following:

1) Stax Omega 2 with Blue Hawaii amp <--- over $3k at least / pretty much the best headphone setup you can get (not including source)
2) Audeze LCD-2 <--- ~$1k / latest and greatest in orthos headphones
3) Sympones Magnum <--- ~$500 / Grados completely revamped by Symphones
4) AKG K1000 <--- legendary headphones no longer in production, supposedly amazing soundstage and overall sound, need great amping to reach potential, like a B22. Not sure how much these are.

Check out the Meet Impressions threads on HF too, that'll give you an idea what it's like, and they're one of the best sources for headphone reviews.
