This weekend I'm attending a 24 hour movie marathon at The Cinematheque in Vancouver. This will be my third time attending. It's a freaking awesome experience, the programming is top-notch. They often screen films that are hard to find/hard to see, have themes. In 2015 the theme was "Time" so we watched movies where time is an important factor: Groundhog Day, Rope, Before Sunset, etc. In 2017 the theme was "Urban Living" we watched movies like Man with a Movie Camera, The White Balloon, and Do the Right Thing. I can't wait to see what they program this time around. We have no idea which movies are playing until the actual movie starts. There's little time between screenings so we get a lot of movies in there, with a meal break at around dinner time and a few extended snack breaks. If you're curious about the lineup for each year, I've left Letterboxd links for them below.

Dante’s Inferno taught us there are nine levels of hell. They are;

1) dating someone who won’t watch “movies with subtitles”

2) when your mom won’t stop asking you questions in a theatre

3) watching any superhero movie

4) watching a three hour superhero movie

5) watching Enter The Void

6) being only allowed to watch PG movies for life

7) having to watch all films in 3D

8) only being allowed to watch films with budgets greater than $100M

9) watching a Transformer movie

Was wondering if enter the void would be mentioned. You really snubbed it when you made your ten worst movies list.

This week in theaters I saw Final Destination 2 in 35mm and Us.

FD2 is better. Really elaborate, clever, and funny death scenes, and amazing tension at times. I haven't seen any of the others in the franchise.

Us:

Spoiler:
Us is messy; I don't buy, understand, or care about the world it tried to create, and the final twist was both obvious and meaningless. It's well made and has a lot of clever bits, but it isn't coherent.

I'd still see Peele's next without question regardless of reviews assuming it's still in the same genre ballpark.

The last time I was in a movie theater and thought to myself I'm fine with this movie going on for many hours, I was watching L.A. Confidential. It was an awesome movie, tight script and only 2 hours and 18 minutes. But if they could have kept up that story telling for 3 hours I would have been cool with that.

This sounds really cool. The selections are much more diverse and on-point than anything I could have come up with.

At some point during the 24 hours, I would have to employ my nook-finding super power and book a little nap time.

Thanks phat for doing that bit of work for me - and I did some more checking and came up with this, stole from wiki:

Sword-and-sandal

From above link:

The silent Maciste films (1914–1927)

The 1914 Italian silent film Cabiria was one of the first films set in antiquity to make use of a massively muscled character, Maciste (played by actor Bartolomeo Pagano), who served in this premiere film as the hero's slavishly loyal sidekick. Maciste became the public's favorite character in the film however, and Pagano was called back many times to reprise the role. The Maciste character appeared in at least two dozen Italian silent films from 1914 through 1926, all of which featured a protagonist named Maciste although the films were set in many different time periods and geographical locations and can therefore not all be subsumed under the terms "peplum" and "sword-and-sandal".

Here is a complete list of the silent Maciste films in chronological order:

Cabiria (1914) introduced the Maciste character
Maciste (1915) a.k.a. "The Marvelous Maciste"
Maciste bersagliere ("Maciste the Ranger", 1916)
Maciste alpino ("Maciste The Warrior", 1916)
Maciste atleta ("Maciste the Athlete", 1917)
Maciste medium ("Maciste the Clairvoyant", 1917)
Maciste poliziotto ("Maciste the Detective", 1917)
Maciste turista ("Maciste the Tourist", 1917)
Maciste sonnambulo ("Maciste the Sleepwalker", 1918)
La Rivincita di Maciste ("The Revenge of Maciste", 1919)
Il Testamento di Maciste ("Maciste's Will", 1919)
Il Viaggio di Maciste ("Maciste's Journey", 1919)
Maciste I ("Maciste the First", 1919)
Maciste contro la morte ("Maciste vs Death", 1919)
Maciste innamorato ("Maciste in Love", 1919)
Maciste in vacanza ("Maciste on Vacation", 1920)
Maciste salvato dalle acque ("Maciste, Rescued from the Waters", 1920)
Maciste e la figlia del re della plata ("Maciste and the Silver King's Daughter", 1922)
Maciste und die Japanerin ("Maciste and the Japanese", 1922)
Maciste contro Maciste ("Maciste vs Maciste", 1923)
Maciste und die chinesische truhe ("Maciste and the Chinese Trunk", 1923)
Maciste e il nipote di America ("Maciste's American Nephew", 1924)
Maciste imperatore ("Emperor Maciste", 1924)
Maciste contro lo sceicco ("Maciste vs the Sheik", 1925)
Maciste all'inferno ("Maciste in Hell", 1926)
Maciste nella gabbia dei leoni ("Maciste in the Lions' Den", 1926)
il Gigante delle Dolemite ("The Giant From the Dolomite", 1927)

Just one more illustration why Italians are the best at, well, just about everything. Including great film titles.

Any of you film wizards seen these films - surely Joe Cole has viewed at least a few?

Yea I think I wrote here (or someone else did in reply) last time I saw it that it could be a mini/maxi series.

The Highwaymen https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1860242/

The true story of two Texas Rangers, brought out of retirement to track down
Bonnie & Clyde.
Great movie with solid performances from Woody Harrelson and Kevin Costner. Costner is not one of my favourite actors but he suits this role really well.

The Bombing https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4743226/
One of the worst war movies I have ever seen. Awful script writing, terrible sfx and lousy acting all round.
Can't believe Bruce Willis and Adrien Brody agreed to this mess. Got to be a low point for both of them.

I've never seen any of the early ones. All the Steve Reeves ones were on local TV, often at odd hours, by the early 1960s.

makes me so sad that there are infinite superhero movies and I don't want to watch a single one, but there is only one beavis and butthead movie and I would pay so much to get a new one.

I love beavis and butthead so godamn much.
