Green Book was a fine watch but it's just not anything special in any way. Pretty weak 2018, Hollywood.

Views over the past month

Chappie
This was a big surprise as I hadn't known anything about it beforehand & watched purely because I liked District 9 from same director. While stupid in parts wrt credulity I nonetheless found it very entertaining, funny & surprisingly poignant & thought provoking overall.

Avengers Infinity War
Was quite impressed with this overall they managed to bring everything together nicely & for me anyway didn't feel like a case of too many cooks

Guardians of the Galaxy 2
I'd read some bad reviews about this beforehand but found it a solid sequel overall.

Equalizer 2
I loved the first Equalizer- was as generic as instant coffee but totally delivered in what it set out to do- but found the sequel rather lackluster & predictable, alas.

Sicarrio 2 Day of the Soldier
Another disappointment for me, apart from pleasing cinematography & an ominous tone it didn't really amount to much with potentially interesting plot points being discarded almost as an afterthought & a downright silly third act.

Creed 2
Not a bad sequel overall but fell kinda flat especially considering its premise & could've been much better.

Lucy
Daft but entertaining flick from Luc Besson with drug mule Scarlett Johansson utilizing 100% of her brain, which leads to lots of gunfights.

Enjoyed Us but it felt like Peele threw in way too much comic relief. There were so many spots when the tension got deflated just so he could throw in another dad joke. Get Out had much better balance, there were plenty of goofs but they never got in the way.

I don’t know that much about the film industry but I don’t understand why there aren’t more dark, “realistic” takes on superhero movies. To me they provide a perfect platform for a director to be completely creative while still having the marketability that studios want.

Hopefully the success of Dark Knight and Logan helps to get more of these types of movies made.

Fingers crossed!

The Marvel Netflix shows kind of do this and make it work.

Most of the classic characters from the 40’s-70’s just don’t work as dark superheroes because they’re so goofy. No one wants a grimdark Aquaman. Batman is kind of an exception.

During the 80’s-90’s there was a push to come up with darker, edgier characters, which is where guys like The Punisher come in.

climax was...something! I enjoyed the first half of the movie and was quite disturbed by the second half of course as I suspect anyone was. Kind of beat over the head in this one. Watching it in an empty theater where no one could share my misery added something to the experience

The dance sequences were pretty great at least

No support for Chromecast though. I suppose I'll need a Firestick.

Firestick is easy...but you should have Prime with it, so you have access to the thousands of movies and programs they have.

Yep! Watched Sofia Coppola's short, Lick the Star. Was very cool to see Coppola's early work, and see her working on techniques we see in her feature length films.

I'll be watching Divorce, Italian Style with my wife tonight. The clingy wife is a cartoon version of my wife, so I'm thrilled to be like, "This is you!" It's a great film about a man trying to get out of a marriage when divorce is illegal, and his fragile male ego.

I do have Prime, but I used Chromecast for Filmstruck with no problem. Not sure why Criterion can't support it. But, then again, I'm not sure of much these days.

I really liked the dance sequences--thought they were great. The movie itself reminded me of a bunch of bad-trip/acid-is-bad movies from the late 60s and early 70s.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) This is a gorgeous film. So many beautiful shots. And, it was quite entertaining.

Brando, though. He made Christian Fletcher a fancy lad. It was a bit hard to swallow at first, but as the film continued he toned it down a bit and it became less noticeable. He certainly wasn't what makes this movie work.

I'm not sure anything makes that picture work. It's a long, bloated mess. How it got nominated for Best Picture without any nominations for direction, writing, or acting, is a mystery. It is far inferior to the 1935 Clark Gables & Charles Laughton version.

Yeah, I figured there would be some comparisons to the original. I've never seen it.

I dunno, I enjoyed it.

Don't forget tonight is the one night only showing of Terry Gilliams movie 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.'

Really like the Peter Weir version, Bounty...with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins....was supposed to be two movies, but it didn't make money so they didn't make the 2nd one

Yeah maybe. Thanks Phat Mack. I’m on the road and the WordPress and Tapatalk combo makes it weird for me to copy and paste links from my phone.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is quite a unique film... unlike most modern film making.

Some might use the word dated or old school (to describe the film making) yet despite the firmly Gilliam style the movie delivers quite the wondrous journey.

Does Sancho Panza help Don Quixote on a last quest, or perhaps it is the other way around... in fact, who is Sancho Panza and who is Don Quixote... and in the end in real life in the real world, who plays these rolls.

The movie is probably not the cup if tea enmasse, but if you enjoy movies like Brazil, Time Bandits you should also enjoy this movie.

I thought the trailer ruined the movie for me. This movie suffer from DC terrible reputation and a director that cannot balance out that reputation forcing some heavy marketing where the trailer is a 9/10 and the movie may be a 7/10 but seeing both transformed the experience into a 5/10 for me and good luck avoiding the trailer that was everywhere for one year non stop.
Studios need to grow some balls and hype their movies in a more creative way. Some movies are hopeless money losers and need heavy artillery, Shazam wasn't.
Kudos to Levi who will have a new career after the marvelous miss maisel and Shazam making people forget the mediocre "chuck".

Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice I vaguely remember when this came out. I was too young to see it. If I remember right, it was supposed to be so incredibly risque.

LOL, it is incredibly tame by today's standards. It could probably play on regular TV now (maybe a couple of minor edits). It doesn't hold up well at all. Different times.

The last scene was really weird. Didn't really fit with the rest of the movie.

Natalie Wood, though..... Damn.
