...you made a point to keep repeating that you are taking the high road by paying him back and you are not legally responsible but morally responsible. I wouldn't say morally responsible = pay or else I get killed. You are not doing it for some reform, you are doing it out of fear. Same thing goes with paying taxes, I'm not being generous when paying taxes, but I pay out of fear of not paying.
