For me it's a lot of practicing. Not necessarily formal but for a couple of weeks before I do one I try to run over the material in my head so I'm really comfortable with the phrasing I want to use.

And then it's just constantly telling myself to slow down. And watching the audience to see if they're following or not. Which is tough because most of the time at least 1/3 (?) of the audience at conferences doesn't really care.

I don't do a ton of talks (maybe ~10 over the last 5 years) and I seriously hate doing them. Definitely hard.

Any tips on how to improve pacing? I just raced through a talk in almost half the time I did a practice run on. Was my first talk, but holy fk do I admire anyone who does tech talks regularly. It's not easy.
You should slow down as you get less nervous. Also focus on taking longer pauses and talking a little slower than you want to. Repeat important concepts.

Reduce the number of slides you are using and put some pictures in. Don't read anything from the slides. Make the font bigger.

You're going to have to consciously fight the tendency to rush through the content.

Practice going through it very slowly and talking out your slides at like .5 speed. If you are not actively trying to slow yourself down, you're going to fly through the material.

I had 31 slides, 8 pictures and used 30pt fonts for pretty much everything. Slightly smaller for code examples and slightly larger for the titles of the slides.

I tried not to read anything from the slides and the slides had little text. Usually 3-4 bullet points per slide with a few words. If not bullet points, then some type of "image + fact" combination.

0.5 speed practice seems good. A friend told me to bite on a pen while doing a practice run to force myself to annunciate better.

I tend to treat presentations like a story which lends itself naturally to breaks, pacing, etc.

i don't understand your question. i've lived places with full seasons more than 15 years of my adult life. while full-season weather has its charms, it's tough to imagine preferring it overall to constant warmth....

If I could have 6 month summers, 2 month fall, 1 month winter, 3 month spring I would be insanely happy.

If that doesn't exist, I'm quite happy skipping Winter entirely.

My retirement plans definitely involve skipping town for a decent chunk of the Winter. If my wife could do her job remotely I'd absolutely do it now.

Edit: I guess I'd be happy if January/February just didn't exist in a typical Canadian year.

This is almost exactly my own ideal (except maybe knock winter down to 3 weeks). Given that this ideal doesn't exist, I'll take 12 month summers tyvm.

2 solid months of a midwestern summer are completely miserable to be outside. It might as well be winter except for the slush and ice scraping.

Idk about you guys but I love a rainy day and nothing beats programming when its pouring outside.

Wish I lived somewhere, where it would rain at least once a week.

Before the climate change Denver had the best weather I'd ever seen. Weeks of sun between rainy days, mostly post card snow with maybe one storm a year where snow stuck around for more than a day or so. The last couple of years it's started changing to be like anywhere else that isn't crappy.

I sometimes wonder if I'm missing out on the some essential education wisdom by not having a college degree, then the usher at the movie theater says only 5% of customers pronounce "ex machina" correctly.

i've lived in the midwest and disagree, but in fairness i just mind being hot way less than i mind being cold, and i know lots of people who feel the reverse. this is straying away from the original question, at least as i meant it: which is would you give up seasons for pleasant/warm weather year round? if we start factoring heat waves and humidity and mosquitoes and such, i would never have asked the question.

The thing that's always really appealed to me about the West coast is that you often have nice weather while still being reasonably close to great skiing destinations.

Alas, too many reasons to stay where I am.
