fortunately it wasn't anything I needed badly but that was a good lesson in the perils of beer+linux
I also have this bad habit. I ended up creating a tmp directory and an alias that automatically takes me to a sub directory in it named based on the current date (tmp/20150613).

It lets me keep everywhere else clean and let's me keep a copy of all my random **** work. Which is nice because sometimes I'll end up going back to find something I did awhile ago.

i still hope i have as many ideas once i know how to program as i do before i learned x.x
Keep in mind ideas don't have to be totally novel to be profitable or have value. Execution and business acumen can have large effects on success.

So I was fooling around on Macbook pro retina that has dedicated GPU and is 15"

Where can I buy glasses that slightly magnifies?
Like seriously would love to use this prime real-estate to its full potential

Thought you guys would think this is sort of cool, also anyone working on 4k monitors yet?

iosys,

most grocery stores with pharmacies have eye glass sections with 1.5-4x magnification reading glasses. Maybe what you're looking for?

I love the retina display but don't have the eyes for that setting, it does make text sharper at all settings which makes using other monitors a pita.

Aight, after about a year's hiatus from programming and doing something else to pay (at least some of) the bills, I am starting to apply for software dev jobs again.

Trying to send somewhere between 1 and 3 applications per day, if and only if there are enough worthwhile positions offered in my area to fill that quota.

I'm pretty curious to see how long it'll take to get a concrete offer.
This means I need to keep track of what I apply for and the steps/stages that followed.

If this is too bloggy, let me know. I don't have an absolute urge to share it if its in the way.

For reference, I am 38 years old, have about 9 years post-studies programming experience (closer to 15 counting all paid projects). My primary focus having been C++ in the financial sector.

A definitive drawback for the next few weeks at least is that we are getting towards the end of financial year here. From my limited experience, offers pick up dramatically after July 1st when the new budgets are in place.

Where are you located and are you willing to move? (Not offering - I'm just saying that is relevant information.)

Was surprised to find over 100 Java postings in my area via slashdot

I could apparently move back to Kansas City and still get a decent job. I'd make less money but still be able to afford a nice house with a yard, instead of the cheapest 1-bdrm condo I could find out here.

Living in Sydney. Just moved here a bit over a year ago on permanent resident visa.
Not willing to move unless offer is between Sydney and Brisbane geographically and financial package ridiculously good.

Have you ever lived through a KC summer or KC winter? Neither are very fun.

Haha +1 to summers and winters in the midwestern United States. Seems like if you've lived there you can live in almost any climate on the planet haha.

Sure you can live through it. But you're confined to indoors like 6 months a year. Post-holiday blues are the worst. Out here I get a post-holiday beach day.

I think I get a little depressed in winter/rainy months when I lived in Maryland. Since moving to California my mood has been so much better and more stable. I don't know if I could go back.

I miss fall and spring in the midwest - but not nearly as much as I don't miss summer and winter.

I hate 50% of the seasons, so was more than happy to trade that for more warm weather.

Have any of you guys given a tech presentation in front of a crowd with slides?

Any tips on how to improve pacing? I just raced through a talk in almost half the time I did a practice run on. Was my first talk, but holy fk do I admire anyone who does tech talks regularly. It's not easy.

Watch the e3 minecraft hololens presentation. Do not do the awkward pacing that girl does. Slightly faster would be fine.
