best solution is backup documents and clean reinstall! trying to fix whatever what wrong CAN work but is a big pita.

new to windows 7, annoyances i have

no quick launch? can i make the links smaller instead of taking up the whole row individually
shaking a window apparently causes the ones below it to minimize wtf dumbest thing ever
how do i hibernate?
how do i stop it from maximizing windows dragged to top of screen

does indexing a HD slow it down? i heard it did. should i disable this? I have a SSD

also here http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...l=1#post442158

it says

Description: If you use Firefox, there's a way to write cached files to RAM instead of the hard disk. This is not only faster, but will significantly reduce writes to the SSD while using the browser.

Instructions: Open Firefox -> Type about:config into the address bar -> Enter -> double-click browser.cache.disk.enable to set the value to False -> Right-Click anywhere -> New -> Integer -> Preference Name "disk.cache.memory.capacity" -> value memory size in KB. Enter 32768 for 32MB, 65536 for 64MB, 131072 for 128MB, etc. -> restart Firefox

how big should i make it? i have 6gb ram

Enable QL
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975784

Disabling "Snap" and "Shake" will stop it from doing those things.

http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-...-in-windows-7/

Start>click the little arrow next to the "shutdown" button for options, hibernate is at the bottom

Win 7 automatically disables indexing if you have an SSD, not that indexing is bad if you have an SSD. In fact I would enable it.

As big as possible, I guess. Try 131072 and see how that goes, imo.

I've had my Intel G2 SSD for almost 11 months (middle of October 2009) and have 98% Media Wearout remaining. That works out to be ~525 months, or over 40 years of writes to go.

Hi, I have a very LC question. When I play Starcraft 2, and close out of it. My icons on my desktop disappear, or go hidden. I can run my mouse over them to restore them, so it's not like they're deleted.. they just are invisible. I tried googling but it was mostly people that physically deleted their icons on their desktop and I couldn't find anything helpful.

Anyone ever have this happen, or know how to fix it? I'm running Vista if that helps.

sounds like a funny graphics card error or something. ive had that happen to me before, but not in sc2, just odd situations occasionally. not sure how to fix. maybe upgrade to win7? tho it's not that huge a deal, perhaps not worth it.

If your mouse restores them then you can probably restore it by moving a window over the icons too?

Could definitely be a driver issue, try a different version.

quick question, macbook pros say they have 9-10hrs of battery life, my buddy got one recently (doesnt play poker) and he says that's what his battery icon shows..

with a MBP, how many hours would you get out of:

1) watching movies
2) playing poker
3) browsing internet

I realize these all have factors related to them, but what is a ballpark on battery life for these activities? I have a 6cell battery in my xps15 and max battery life I get is like 2hours, a 9cell would give me like what 4hrs max? How does MBP battery have such a long life?

Hey, about to order a new desktop but figured I should look for another opinion. I play on 6 sites which seems to be too much for my laptop so I'm forced to upgrade.

I want something that will support plenty of different applications at the same time, run two 30" monitors and basically be pretty fast all around.

Following some advice, I went for a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the following:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 860 (2.80GHz, 8MB)

Memory: 8192MB (4x2GB) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory

Graphics Card - Single 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTS 240 (Went on Nvidia website, said it supported multi-monitor)

1TB Hard Drive

Built in wireless, no bluetooth, coming in at £878. Seem ok?

I am by no means set on buying this particular computer and if there is a better one at a similar price I would certainly be tempted.

I don't need super hardcore gaming stuff, just something to support a lot of poker and run fast whilst having lots of stuff open.

Thanks

They have a bigger battery than yours as they are not removable so Apple can custom make the battery extra big to fill up all gaps not used. They also have switchable graphics going from onboard integrated i5 graphics to the nvidia gpu when needed, that saves a lot of battery.

And they've optimized OS X pretty well to save battery. Hard to say how long it would last for you.

Doesn't look bad. Build your own for the best performance/price. Make sure the graphics card can do dual DVI assuming you're using LCDs. It probably can, I'm thinking it has a DVI port and maybe an HDMI port you can convert to DVI with a little plug.

Where do I even go to build my own... (uk based) prob could find out but on my iPhone atm. I'm super tech unsavvy so I'm not sure me building my own is gonna turn out particularly well
09-12-2010 , 07:29 PM
overclock.net has everything you need. they have a large uk contingent who can help you out.

hell, maybe just look on the for sale forum for complete systems for sale in the uk. post it here first to confirm its a good system. but building your own is more fun and useful

For performance, I think 4GB ram + a small SSD would run miles around 8GB ram + a normal hdd.
