They could chip it long. Especially since they need a td.

Then just drill it right out one of the guys in the middle. I'm surprised teams don't try that more.

keep in mind lee has a sick boot and even if Pats for a 3 and out they're just going to aids position again. with no TOs and not much time.
It's not 100%, but it's well over 50%. Not sure what their odds of converting on 4th and 2 are, but either way, they still have to go 80 yds if they pick up the first down.

With 2 TOs and the 2min warning, the Pats could theoretically get the ball back with almost 2 full minutes left. How is that "not much time?"

Gg. It will be interesting to see what unfolds if they meet in the SB since Gronk should be back and the Pats will have some more tape of Kaep.

I like the crowd everyone into the middle and then dribble it ten yards kick. Not sure if you can still pull of a variant of it given the NFL kickoff rules, unsure of how many guys you need split outside of the numbers nowadays

Even if they do score a TD they lose in regulation a very small portion of the time anyways and lose in OT without getting the ball another larger portion of the time.
well obv it's not 99% pats get a TD. thanks bro. I'm sure live betting at odds had SF at like -900 or some crap before they even knew whether pats were kicking or going for it, and I doubt the line shifts a ton either way. I suspect it improves for the pats if they go for it but i could certainly be wrong.

it's certainly not an "awful" decision in that it shifted EV some massive amount.

"Theoretically."

If the Pats punt, the best case scenario is that they're in basically the exact same spot and with no TOs and less time.

Anyways, interested in seeing the inevitable Burke post on this, but I feel like people saying "punt" are making the same mistakes people always make in these spots.

i've wondered this myself but i bet it's incredibly hard to do and whenever you whiff it's truly the worst onside kick of all time.

No it's not. It is possible for the 9ers to turn the ball over, something that's only happened a bajillion times already in the game. The 9ers could get a false start, or a run for a loss, backing them up. Finally, none of those things could happen, and the 9ers punter could shank it or the Pats get a nice return.

There's a million ways the Pats aren't pinned back again. Even if they are, 2 mins with no TOs is plenty sufficient for Tom Brady. The extra clock stoppages are nice but likely extraneous.

The 4th down calculator shows it's a clear go4it, wp = .14 vs. punting = .02 (if I plugged in the numbers right)

San Franciso 49ers guide to beating the New England Patriots

Play during a rain storm in the middle of winter which will help your run game and hurt the Pats pass offense.

Fumble and recover 10 times

Get gifted half a dozen turnovers

Punt the ball 60+10 twice in the 4th quarter

Convert 3rd and 20 on a screen pass

Fake a punt on 4th in 10

Get a 65 yard kickoff return

Get a bunch of wide open 40 yard passes where the receiver is barely touched

Win by a touchdown!
