Lajoie is horrible. Rafi is that show's best character and it's not particularly close

Does anyone know what this TV movie is going to be?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3468798/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_4

Very little chance it stinks if it's written by Louis CK and Zach Galifianakis. "Plot undisclosed" is all the imdb page says.

Sounds like it will be a show, not a movie.

Thanks. Wow when I clicked on that first link I was like "goddamn, Billy Crystal is in it?" But fortunately he has his own separate show which I'm sure will blow.

This will be the last thing I say about this, because it looks like this topic is just lolme, but this has to be false. In fact, I'd go as far as to say the show runners have left out valuable/crucial information about characters that have hindered their depth.

I think the fact that we have actors who can show expression (and good actors at that) change the thought on some. For instance, Oberyn, while well liked, was never thought to be this bad ass unbelievable character. But Pedro Pascal absolutely KILLED the performance, and now people are trying to remember him as this legendary guy in the book.

I won't say anything else because I don't want to spoil anything, and again, I think it's a dead topic, but I did want to at least say that.

Anyway, I'm glad to see Rome is getting talked about. That was the next show up I wanted to watch. Will definitely be starting it up when I get the chance

by depth I don't mean back story, history, etc; I mean the characters having a distinct voice, and being able to discern what makes them tick, how they are as people, etc etc. In the first book, we only really get a good feel for Ned, Robert, Tyrion, Arya, and Dany. I guess Varys to a lesser extent, as well as Caetlyn (and even with her it's a stretch). But very interesting characters like Joffrey, Cersei, Jaime, the Hound... they don't shine through in the book like they do in the show. In Jaime's case this may be justifiable, as after we initially meet him in Winterfell and he pushes Bran, we never see him again, whereas in the show, we see scenes with him when he's captured (maybe this wasn't even season 1, I forget).

It's largely due to how it's written, with the story only told from certain characters' perspectives. The show follows this somewhat but has a bit more freedom to highlight Cersei, Littlefinger, Varys, etc. And it works out better, because many of the non-"lead" characters are very compelling.

Maybe as the books go on some of this gets rectified, but so far in book 2 it's worse imo.

The show does do a good job of highlighting some of the lesser characters early on. Keep reading though. The number of characters who have chapters increases as you move forward.

Book Joffrey < Show Joffrey
Book Hound < Show Hound
Book Jamie > Show Jamie
Book Cersie ~= Show Cersie (if forced to choose I'd say book)
Book Tywin < Show Tywin
Book Tyrion > Show Tyrion

imo

That's pretty accurate I think.

Started watching Farfgo. Loving it so far.

I'd put show Tyrion over just because Dinklage destroys the part. Not to say book Tyrion isn't amazing.

Also, WRT book Jaime not shining in the first book, keep reading. He easily becomes one of the best characters in the series. Hell, so does Cersei (maybe not one of the best, but you learn so much about her and all of her motives)

It's a series where as you read more you get rewarded. You guys are making justifications about it based on reading one book out of a (most likely) seven book series.

The character and motivations/backstory is better in the books, but the acting gives a lot more life to Tyrion. It's close.

It's very close because of how perfect they cast the role but all the added context and internal dialogue puts book Tyrion over the top for me personally.

Complete opposite, read the first three books as fast as I could and struggled with four and five.

Back to the sopranos, I mentioned a few posts back that I started a rewatch and found it a little dated. That passed. The first two or three eps weren't really doing it for me, but I'm on ep ten or eleven and I'm all in. What a show.

Probably has something to do with the fact that I already knew the plot lines of the first three books. Some of four and most/all of five were uncharted territory.

Good man.

It was weird watching Gandolfini not quite be Tony in the earliest eps. Later on I'm amused by incredible writing bailing out the bad actors (and there were a lot of them).

By far my favorite has been Chase firing shots all over the place - particularly the ones at higher education and overintellectuals. I totally forgot all the sarcastic shots fired at everyone and everything.

Most fantasy and a lot of scifi is just crappy writing. Doesn't take an English-major-turned-hipster-because-he/she-was-too-dumb-for-anything-else type of person to figure that out.
Fantasy is way more about "world building" and the overall story than good writing.

Tony: "F*cking Internet"
