Yeah?

In 2003 Liverpool finished in 4th on 60 points and United finished in 3rd with 75 points (15 behind Arsenal and 4 behind Chelsea)

Houllier left and Rafa took then over...

Since then Benitez has a net spend of approx 8.5m more than Ferguson (obviously we don't know the accuracy of these figures but it's a best guess - with a ballpark of maybe 4 - 16m maybe)

Now to challenge for the league and improve our team to that standard, we need to spend MORE than United and especially since United have been building on solid championship winning team for the previous 12/13 years.

Do you really think spending approx 8m more over a three year period on a team that finished 15 points behind is really going to close that gap?

Also Chelsea earned 16 points more the next season after spending 50m more than United that summer. I think that shows the figures we're talking about here if we really want to win the league.

Surely this shows that Rafa hasn't had as much as he needs to spend - and while i don't think we need to outspend United by 50m a season to win a league - we do need to be investing more then we are currently.

Also I haven't talked much about Arsenal as they are a product of an amazing Youth System which Wenger has spent 8 years putting together. Something I hope we experience in a few years since Rafa has completely turned around our youth system!

I broke it into nice small paragraphs so the idiots who keep going on about how much Rafa has spent will not be put off. Oh I also put the important stuff in bold so it's matches the style of the rags you obviously read....

While sole manager at liverpool, Houllier had an average points per game of 1.45, Rafa's has been 1.8. Fergie's since 2004 has been 2.2. Speaks for itself really, in a better position then before but a lot more work to do.

One last stat in Fergies first 4 years he had an average of 1.49 points a game, 0.3 less than Rafa at the same stage. Plus, lets not forget that UTD finished 4th the season before Fergie took over.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now, for all those who like to critiscise the players he has brought in, please consider the following:

You have 22million (1/4 of Rafas net spend over 4 years) to spend and 4 positions to fill. This leaves you with two choices:

You could sell 4 of the crap players playing there right now and have 30m to spend and replace those four 2m pound players with four 7.5m pound players who are good enough to ensure a top 4 finish.

OR

You could buy one top class player and not sell the four 2m pound players but you wouldn't be able to guarantee that they are good enough to ensure a top 4 finishing position / challenge in Europe and therefore might lose your job considering your predecessor was fired for finishing 4th...

What would you do?

Now United have been in the position where if they buy that one top class player they can still challenge the next season due to the quality and depth of the squad - Liverpool have not been in the position since Dalglish was managing.

Rafa's hand has been forced to some extent in the transfer market due to the lack of squad depth and poor players he inherited. His transfer market performance is nowhere near as misguided or wasteful as people make out.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Ultimately, it takes time to build squads. Ferguson and Wenger have been afforded that time. Mourinho wasn't afforded time - instead he was given enough money that it didn't matter.

Yes, recent results have been below expectations. The title seems beyond us for another year which hurts. However, getting rid of Benitez now solves nothing. Who do you hire? Anything worth doing requires time and patience. Under Rafa, Liverpool have been more consistent and competitive then at any time since Dalglish. There is clearly more work to be done. Rafa has clearly earned the time and support to get that work finished.

Wrong. November 16, 2002. Arsenal 3 - Sp*rs 0

It was after Henry dribbled from his own half, through and around your whole defense to score. Then decided to go taunt your section at Highbury.

Eddie Johnson signed with Fulham today. He will now surely live up to his potential and become a goal scoring machine and rally Fulham from regulation.

I'm guessing he struggles the rest of this year. But watch out for him in the Championship. He might be able to do some real serious damage there.

Please sell Clint though when you get relegated this summer Fulham! Please please please!

The reason Liverpool are so far behind is due to the manager, maybe the wouldn't be top if he played to win every game, but they'd certainly be closer, and he's had an awful lot of money to spend to produce such a mediocre team.

Huhwah? Reread my post. He inherited a squad that was inferior to the other big three. Since then he has a net spend in line with what UTD have spent; and miles behind Chelski (also, as I said, Arsenal are a seperate case because of a youth investment approach that is miles ahead of everyone else). You can call it an 'awful lot of money' - but the fact that we haven't gained much ground should not be that surprising. If you invest at the same level as the competition who were a certain degree ahead of you when you started; doesn't the gap stay the same? If you are thinking about it logically that is.

The team is not 'mediocre' either. That word suggests midtable or a complete lack of competitiveness. The team is talented; and the reason recent results have been frustrating is because they are clearly good enough to be beating Wigan, City and Aston Villa. And in all of those games, the performances were sufficient to take three points. The rub of the green was against them however.

You can call the 'waiter' a tinkerman. And note one decision that was questionable like it it wipes everything else away. But two champions league finals in three years speak volumes for his tactical expertise. Every team rotates and rests players (Utd and Chelsea do aswell!!). If Torres won't be able to play 60 games a season and be producing what he is capable of.

You have completely ignored my arguments, and just trotted out two of the most common tabloid misconceptions about the situation. But that's football punditry I suppose. Stats and facts are awkward and messy little things eh? Easier to stick to broad sweeping generalisations. Makes you sound smarter too!!

It really is quite funny at times. It just takes a slight swing in short term variance for the results against Man City; Middlesboro; Aston Villa and Wigan to be four wins as opposed to four draws and much of the critiscisms fade away. Would the team be any different if that was the case? No. But the public perception would be massively changed. More than most sports - football breeds analysis and discussion that is simplistic, reactionary and ******ed.

Oh well.
