gortat is OK. he's certainly not a drain on the suns. the suns are poor at defense basically because they gave a lot of mins to hakim/frye in what was surely the worse defensive frontcourt OAT and their wing defense, although not awful, is not a positive.

since gortat came aboard, IIRC the suns climbed from last in the league to merely 24th or so, so in that time they've been almost average. pietrus, although not a good defender, is OK, and he's been an upgrade over Turk. vince has been slightly better than JRich. warrick isn't getting any PT.

fwiw thats a kbfcian response. anyway, point stands, LBJ is probably the 3rd or 4th most valuable defender in the league. It's Dwight, then a decent gap, then probably KG and Timmy, then LBJ. I don't mind LBJ getting DPOY votes whatsoever, he deserves some credit.

I said it in the 30for30 thread, but I'll say it again here, even though I'm a big fan, and think he's right on a lot of the substance of the piece, I think Grant comes off as a little bit bitchy and preachy in that piece. The Fab 4of5 were describing how they felt as 17-18 year olds, does he want them to lie about how they felt at the time? And wouldn't the acknowledgment of this in the piece only strengthen his point that these attitudes are pernicious?

Not really. I mean he has probably typed sentences like that, but it's not the same coming from his as from you, according to my secret poster stats.

UCWIDT?

payton, billups, rondo, baron davis

Grant Hill not doing any favors for Duke's academic reputation. Talk about an inability to synthesize an contextualize information. It was clear as day that Jalen was admitting to being a (understandably) bitter, immature kid.

i need to watch this fab 5 30for30 piece. is there a clip or ESPN airing of the ep coming up?

It's all about their lack of Winning mentality.

I remember (lol)bosh getting by gasol at will last week. Not to say gasol wasn't getting around bosh at will too, but c'mon. Poor defense all around.

Getting scored on by good offensive players = terribad at D.

Sorry, I guess "poor" was a bad word of choice. But c'mon, bobbo saying really, really good was much worse. I'd say he's probably a slightly above average defender at his position.

I think by focusing on Bosh scoring on him, you're missing a lot of what makes a big man good at defense - he protects the rim reasonably well, is quite good at help and recover on the perimeter, and rotates really well. Not to mention he changes ends very quickly, which helps in transition. I mean if we're talking about the best "on ball" post defenders, that's probably like Chuck Hayes, Perk and so on. But that's really a pretty small part of what these guys do.

The main problem with Gasol this year has been with his rotation. He's either in the wrong position or rotating too slow. This was extremely noticeable while Bynum was hurt and still happens but Bynum saves his ass often enough now that we can overlook it and simply enjoy the road to the 3peat.

You could be right, but part of this depends on scheme - it's possible that the Lakers want him to run guys off of shots because he's got another quality defensive big in Bynum or Doom behind him.

And again, this points to a larger problem in evaluating defense because it's really hard for us to know who actually made the mistake, or even if a mistake was made on a defensive possession - I would imagine that for teams playing against the Celtics, Rondo finishing at the rim in the half court would be considered a decent defensive possession as the alternative might be contesting too heavily and giving up a dunk.

I'm sure you're right for any individual game (non-Laker for me) but having watched every minute of every game Pau has been a Laker. . .the guy is obviously rotating slower this year.
03-16-2011 , 05:04 PM
Fair enough. At least I'm right that he was good at rotations at one point though!
