You know what else Jeff Fisher did? Took a delay of game, with a timeout remaining, with like :02 left to turn a potential game winning 53 yard fg into a 58 yard fg that his kicker then missed.

Yes.

If Lynch goes down on the 1, the chances of the Saints winning is exactly 0%

Has anyone ever LOST a fumble in the NFL on a QB kneel down call? I've been watching football my whole life and never saw that happen.

Even if that happens, the Saints have the ball with no TO, down by 8, with either 150, 110, or 30 seconds to go.

Spoiler:
I mean I guess if he gets a kick up at all it maybe has a better than 18% chance of going in through pure luck, but I still hate the call.

The chances of the Saints converting a 4th and 15 vs. that Seattle defense were way worse than a professional FG kicker making a FG

Think about the absurd case. Your defense is so bad, you can't stop anyone ever. So, then you have to onside kick 100% of the time. Now, peel that back a little bit. If your defense is not TOTALLY bad, then you kick deep on occasion. How often should a team be doing that?

I don't know, but the Chargers never got the ball back in that game. Is it more likely to stop the Broncos from running out the clock, or from getting the ball back on an onside kick?

Rivers did, which I am pretty sure the worst day ever gif came from.

guys I think we can stop wondering why it is head coaches don't devote any time or energy to figuring anything out.
NFL GMs n owners are actually avoiding buddy ryan for a head coaching job cuz his hair is too long (I'm not arguing he would be a good HC or not just pointing out how insanely stupid these ppl are and how terrible their criteria for who they consider hiring is).
I mean it's 2014 but we don't give a **** if you know when to go on 4th down or how to manage the clock just want someone with a nice clean wholesome look.
I mean if ur hiring decision is affected in any way by the length of the guys hair you clearly just DGAF.

Lynch should have taken a knee but most players are stupid and/or selfish so i can understand him scoring the td.what tomlin did and then said was beyond idiotic.

Lynch scoring a TD there is also incredibly unlikely, so I highly doubt any discussion was had prior to the play call. Maybe down the line Russell/Pete would have said something, but it wasn't a 5 yard Tomlinseque call or whatever.

Yeah he's also making a split second decision and doesn't necessarily realize that the clock worked down perfectly for him to go down.

He seems to be slowing down and thinking about it from the 5. When he scores it seems like he's a little perturbed at himself for not going down.

Thing is that there's positive outcomes relative to a very, very very likely missed field goal even if you just run a screen/draw and don't give up the field position from a missed kick. Admittedly field position wasn't going to be a big deal given the time, but I do think they had a greater chance of picking up the 4th down than making that field goal.

Pete's so big with his "always win" stuff that I suspect taking a knee there is just against his ethos as a person.

Holy ****. The cross-field lateral to end the Saints game was a designed play.

Maybe I don't know the rule correctly. Why not just stack the middle?

That doesn't really square with the blurb you posted from, what FO(?) that said teams are hopelessly, violently screwed against the Seahawks on 3rd and long, which would be exacerbated by the monsoon conditions.

To me it's the better choice of two horrible options and all predicated on the notion that the FG is less likely to produce a good result for you team that just armpunting the ball and praying for PI/Auburn/mid-play adderall suspension.

Uhhh well because, umm, yeah I got nothing.

Only thing I can think of off hand is that a kick towards the sideline travels a longer distance and takes more time allowing your guys to get further down the field. A kick up the middle would likely get to 10 yards too quickly.

Of course it was. Why run a normal play then take 1 or 2 SHATS at the endzone, which can either be TDs or DPI flags giving you the ball at the 1 with 1 more play even if the clock hits zero, when you can call a really fancy play that hasn't worked since "the band is on the field!" game like 30+ years ago?

Music City Miracle brah

Having your stud QB lead a one minute drill to make it to the NFCCG is good and all, but being the super-crazy-brilliant strategist coach who outthunk Peter Carroll on some trick play to do it? Thats immortality.
