It should be noted that not every non-US soccer fan is a slave to the queen.

Defence WTF is this ****, taking down a fence? Cooldown after an exhausting fencing match at Eaton? Some White Collar Division sting operation?

I get that this is the answer, but it shouldn't be. There's no reason the people cutting the checks shouldn't be getting granular with stuff like this and forcing their employees to do those things that unquestionably would help them win more games. You simply shouldn't have to take the good with the bad when you're paying a guy that kind of money. Not when the bad is so clearly bad, and so easily correctable.

STRONG DISAGREE. Forget specifics of one game, it's clear over hte course of his career than Reid can't manage a clock.

guy like Reid is going to go absolutely ape**** if you tell him he isn't allowed to call timeout to "talk about it" because he saw something in the defence or whatever. He's going to believe that he's being hamstrung, sabotaged, prevented from doing his job.
I remind him that he's got millions of dollars that will help him feel better, and that I can take those millions of dollars away if he's not going to do everything possible to help my team win. I would point out that no team wins because of one person, and that if he's going to feel upset when other people offer input, he needs to grow up and GTFO. This is a business, and it's really a shame how much people let ego infect it.

I really think that approach could work, it's just that the people smart enough to do it are probably not buying football teams, and instead the closest version is just somebody like Jerry Jones who gets involved where he shouldn't.

Except you can't take those millions of dollars away because he has a contract.

I will go full Al Davis on him. Fired for cause, tear the contract up. GTFO Walrus. (obv hypothetical owner Dids never hires Reid, but does have language in the contracts for his imaginary coaches detailed his expectations, which realistically would probably be requiring that an assistant be tabbed with clock management responsibilities).

Most of all it just tilts me that they don't want to get better at every damn aspect of the game as coaches. Lol people with no curious minds.

Yeah the real answer to "why don't owners insist on decent clock management etc" is they don't think it is a problem or big deal I think.

Friend of mine who played D1 football, when I mentioned Auburn should have tried a Hail Mary to end the half broke out with these gems.

"If you trust your punter, then you have to punt"

"You are wrong! Did you play D1 football? I played, I know."

And my personal fav

"Ok they don't punt, what if they fumble and it gets returned for a TD, Hail Marys get returned all the time for TD's"

I never lol'd wat so much in my life.

How many Hail Mary's in the history of college football have been returned for touchdowns? Probably 0 or 1.

Your friend would get along great with my dad.

Any TDs probably came from the QB being sacked, fumbling, and someone running it back, but still a highly unlikely event obviously.

Got one. Didn't seem important enough to pause. Not like I had money on the game. I just assumed they'd go for two.

For me the best part of what if they go for it and the other team scores a TD logic is that it happened to Mike McCarthy this season @ Cin.

...which is also rare, because the defense rushes 3 guys at most (so even if the QB is going down, he usually sees it coming).

I think the biggest risk (still tiny) when you're in the other team's end is that you'll derp the snap or something, have to fall on it, and the clock stops before :00 to give the other team a free FG try. With :02 or less on the clock there's virtually no downside to the Hail Mary.

That one is a great glimpse into the risk-averse mind. Of course bad things only happen to plays that are not by the book. A punt,on the other hand, never gets returned for a TD.

The 2007 ND Stanford game featured a sick two lateral Hail Mary return for a TD, but it was negated by a personal foul that had absolutely nothing to do with the play. Only one I've ever seen. I believe Zbikowski both intercepted the ball and scored the TD. God, that season was so bad, there was another incredible TD catch wrongly overturned in that game, so the top two plays of the year were both overturned touchdowns

haha exactly. guaranteed that punts have been blocked/returned for a TD at an exponentially higher rate than defenses have scored TDs off of a Hail Mary. So punting instead of Hail Mary simultaneousy increases your opponent's expected points and decreases yours! Yay risk-averse!!

And if they're that worried about an interception they can just throw it out of bounds

True but most hail Mary's the defense isn't trying to return for a TD (and probably would have been the same in this case)

Oh don't get me wrong throwing it out of bounds is still ******ed, but is much much less ******ed than punting for sure

I'm curious how you guys would rank the remaining playoff coaches in terms of making good game management decisions (4th downs, clock management, aggressiveness with a lead etc.). I'll take a stab, though I'm not that confident in my rankings (other than #1 obv):

BB
Payton
Harbaugh
Norv II
Riverboat Ron (award for most improved)
Cancer Chilly
lolPete
Firefox (though luckily gets overruled by his QB)

Yeah, as a Seahawks fan, sadly I have to say that Carroll being near the bottom here is probably correct. I'll be irate if the Seahawks lose on Saturday because of any of these things.
