It's not even ****ing close to as bad as Pagano's. I think you've repressed the memory of how goddamn terrible Pagano's punt was. They had 4th and
ONE.
ONE YARD. And there was 10:20 left in the game to get three touchdowns.
Denver was looking at 4th and 11 with 10:45 left in the 3rd quarter. They're down 4 scores but they have almost the whole half. If the Seahawks take a few minutes off the clock there will still be enough time. And the field position does matter a bit: a FG from Seattle would make it 5 scores and put the game completely out of reach.
And OK, they're at the SEA 39 and that makes it worse, but how often do you think the Broncos figured to convert 4th and 11 against that Seahawks defense today? You can't just use league averages there. How often is there a turnover inside the redzone, or how often does SEA go 3 and out running the ball to eat clock and gives Denver a new set of downs at like the DEN 40 or wherever?
I'm not saying punting was correct or anything, I'm saying at least there are arguments for doing it. Pagano just had a straight choice between some chance to win and no chance to win and chose no chance.
