In Mike Smith's post-game press conference, he defended his timeout by saying "well, if I didn't call timeout, the Browns would have".

The stupidity is incomprehensible.

4 out of 5 NFL head coaches agree - timeouts: who needs 'em?

The Bears are 5-6? would be clear front runners in the nfc south, dont understand what everyone is so worked up about

so the bucs get a 4th and 1 sneak stuffed with about 2 min left down 8. It's not really close to a first down. Bears get the ball but the bucs have 2 timeouts and chicago is always going run run run (or very easy completion in bounds on 3rd down) then punt b/c that's what trestman just did on the last series.

instead Lovie challenges an unwinnable challenge (since when does a challenge ever get turned from a giant pile?) and loses so now they only have one timeout. TB gets the ball with 20 and not 55 or so seconds left. They went from having a small chance to about none.

^It's amazing that this happened mere hours after Butch Jones did pretty much the same exact thing (and cost his team the game because of it). Not only are these coaches all idiots, but they don't even try to learn.

Calling timeouts for the other team is a matter of gallantry and gentlemanliness.

they got ridiculously blown out vs good teams, team routinely commits penalties that should about never happen, constant miscommunication (particularly on defense), jay cutler, can't score on offense even vs bad defensive teams despite being loaded on offense (including zero points in first Q of 6 straight games). Injuries are taking a bit of a toll though but that's never a good excuse.

edit--today trestman declined a 15 yard penalty on the bucs at the literal end of the half (bucs kicking off after the FG) that some people are getting on him about but I think half the team was in the lockerroom so I might've as well.

Not call TO

Aside from running onto the field and doing something that gets your team immediately disqualified, calling TO there is the absolute worst thing you can do.

Mike Smith should be fired tonight, and he should have been fired after every single week dating back a couple years or so.

And the SE poster who, a few weeks ago, said "I think Mike Smith 'gets it'" should also be permanently banned.

There are coaches who probably make dumber overall decisions, but hard to believe any of them hurt their team as much as Firefox does given who his players are.

Coaches I'd fire tonight if I could:

Rex Ryan
Bill O'Brian
Ken Whisenhunt
Tony Sporano
Coughlin
Mike SmAIDS
RiverAIDS
Loviebola

I'd only keep Tomlin, FAT MIKE, and Firefox simply b/c they are making playoff pushes and it may be too late to rustle the organization, but at the end of the year I'd can them all.

Save Gus Bradley and Jay Gruden b/c I don't think anyone should have to coach JAX or Racistskins. Just let these dudes keep collecting paychecks.

That's (8) coaches that should be fired tonight without any further thought or analysis. (3) that will be canned at the end of the year even if they ship a RANG. And (2) that probably deserve it but it's a pity save.

The other 19 head coaches deserve another week.

the TO is bad b/c there's no real difference with all your TO's from 55 sec left to running it down to say 30 seconds left in terms of your expected points on the drive and especially b/c it's about to be third down whereas those 25 seconds are a huge difference for the browns drive with all of their TO's because you can run a play and call TO in like 6 seconds so that's potentially 4 plays you're letting them have for no reason if you make the kick (and if you miss, well congrats you can't get the ball back now b/c you don't have 3 TO's).

Him saying "because the browns were going to call TO" is just absurd. They don't have infinite # of TO's Mike...

Mike Smith called lots of time outs to help the Lions a few weeks ago. He has single handedly lost two games for his team this year.
