The idea that "everyone" missed the housing bubble is very much overplayed.
Damn everyone is so fast in this thread.
My sister was undergrad econ student at Yale and had classes with said professor. He predicted housing bubble back then (it was like 2002 or 2003 I believe) she also said there was bunch of articles in Economist about it. People knew back then at least @ Yale.
Also here is Krugman predicting housing bubble:

Why public reception was how it was maybe you should blame gov administration back then ?

I was happy to wake up to the news of the latest CBS poll, showing a 3-way race between Gingrich, Cain and Romney. Gingrich is clearly the flavor of the moment, however fleeting that may be.

I actually think that the campaign could be semi-interesting if Gingrich is able to hang in there for a while or even get in a heads-up position with Romney. Debates between the two of them would provide some interesting contrasts.

I agree, I would love a HU between Rom/Newt and for this to ultimately be the R ticket. (in that order only because I feel Romney has more overall appeal)

I will continue to maintain that Newt's surge isn't as likely to be fleeting as fresh on the scene types like Cain and like Huck last time.

From my standpoint, as this primary race began, I always just kind of thought, "Well, I really like Newt, but he clearly has no chance, so I'll just focus elsewhere." I doubt I was in any way alone on that. Now that it seems that he could really have a chance, my enthusiasm for him has gone up considerably and I think there are similar sentiments around the base. We'll see what kind of momentum he can really establish, but I think we're going to see him finish top three in Iowa and then we'll see where things stand.

fyi I sold off those 2K cain shares several weeks ago (pre-scandal) shortly after buying about 700 gingrich shares at 2.8.

also fyi I am strongly considering shorting romney through iowa.

just throwing this out there.

oh, I forgot to mention this but my biggest fail thus far was shorting a ton of perry for about 2 points' worth and then deciding 'yep, my target got hit, he's done falling for a while unless he says something else monumentally ******ed' about three weeks back. who knew!

CBS News National 11/6-11/10

18% Cain
15% Romney
15% Gingrich
8% Perry
5% Paul
4% Bachmann
2% Santorum
1% Huntsman

Cain down 7, Romney down 6. Romney's continuous crash is pretty amazing to me. Romney's last poll number this low was back when Perry first entered the race and he hit 14 twice. And before that, it was back in May, when he trailed Giuliani.

Newt will be the VP on the ballot.

I like that Romney and Newt both clearly respect Ron Paul on domestic/economic stuff. With Paul finishing his time in Congress, I'm hopeful that if the GOP wins then Paul may have a cabinet invite waiting.

Ron Paul as Secretary of the Treasury would be pretty bad ass IMO.

None of the candidates will be the VP pick. They all have too much baggage and I don't think they like each other much. Also, no establishment candidate will pick RP for any cabinet post, that's not how the game is played in DC.

How can you like Newt? Like i get he is supposed to be some big ideas man, like how he basically invented Obamacare as a good example, but he is a complete douchebag.

He probably isnt electable because of his dickishness, but if he were he would set back US-world relations decades because of how he is such an unlikeable bastard.
11-11-2011 , 12:43 PM
Newt can work the media though. he needs money, which Perry has . . .

Very objective lol, you probably also said Christie could never make it because he's fat.

Never a good trend when "Someone else" is trending upwards for two consecutive polls.

These polls are a great representation of just how fragmented the R party really is.

In short, because:
1. I'm not picking an American Idol contestant; and
2. I have zero doubt that he can be effective at diplomacy.

Between that, and liking the majority of his politics, and thinking he's one of the most brilliant men to run for President on either side of the aisle in decades...that's where I arrive at a highly positive opinion.

I don't care that he's a douchebag. Do you care that our Vice President is a douchebag? I'll make those types of judgments separately, but I'm far too cynical to let that affect my vote.

Dunno if its the way they wanted but the Republicans are truly putting on a show. Gingrich making a run now?

Its like the Republicans are cycling through their candidates by process of elimination.

I mostly think Newt shoots on the media and they cant wait to shoot back on him, he just wasnt relevant enough to care about until now.
