They're free to choose their own hours, vehicle (with some requirements), clothes (assume there's some sort of dress code), routes, customers, etc.

They pretty much fit the definition of independent contractor outside the being able to take the wage and then pay someone a portion to do the work (they might be able to, I'm not sure on this one).

I can easily imagine a business where somebody finances vehicles for Uber drivers in a way that is no different than how cab companies operate now.
09-19-2014 , 07:34 PM
I just don't know if there's something in the Uber rules that would prevent it. It certainly seems feasible otherwise.

Well the biggest difference would be that there would not be a monopoly enforced by medallions

Well, at this point Uber is just a brand name, certainly if they did oppose that someone could start their own app-based taxi service that didn't.

So watching non-recorded network tv because football obviously. Landrieu (the democrat) is attacking Cassidy, the republican, for not wanting to build a border fence, touting her votes against amnesty, and saying cassidy voted to cut medicare with a bunch of scared seniors.

Louisiana is bizzaro world.

What's the latest on the "laundreu lives with her mom" situation?
09-21-2014 , 03:13 PM
Well iirc that's how she claims louisiana residency. Know nothing beyond that haven't seen a single republican ad.

Upcoming Daily Show bit next week:

Spoiler:

Quote:
The four diehard Washington Redskins fans who had signed-up to defend their team's name on the Daily Show surely knew that they were in for some jesting, but they were not prepared for the ambush that awaited them.

During the Sept. 13 taping of the a yet-to-air episode, the four fans were confronted by Native American activist and sketch comedy group
Quote:
One of the fans, Kelli O'Dell, left the taping in tears. "I felt in danger. I didn't consent to that," O'Dell told the Post, "I am going to be defamed." (She later attempted to file a police report, but authorities told her no crime had been committed)

It sounds hilarious and super super awkward all at the same time.

Not the 60 Minutes ISIS piece [not bad], the one they did after.
Does it seem kinda unfair to you folks about all the crap endured by the online pokering community 3-4 years ago regarding prepaid Visa/Mastercard
[yes, they even showed f**king GreenDot],
meanwhile, people are out filing phony returns and loading up prepaid cards, for 4k+$?
[f**k waiting for a Treasury check in the snailmail!]

This is karma on the IRS for labeling all of us as filthy degens.

NOTE: They actually predict that the IRS will be "hemorraging money" by 2016 if steps aren't taken starting like right f**king now.

It's been fun, guyz. I give up.

Matt Bai has a long piece in NYT magazine on Gary Hart's downfall and its lasting effect on US politics. I started reading it as a bit of nostalgia and it doesn't disappoint in that regard but it is quite a bit more.

Next time someone bitches about the price tag of some welfare thing, remember that our money currently goes towards things like this and nobody gives a ****:

U.S. Ramping Up Major Renewal in Nuclear Arms

Quote:
A sprawling new plant here in a former soybean field makes the mechanical guts of America’s atomic warheads. Bigger than the Pentagon, full of futuristic gear and thousands of workers, the plant, dedicated last month, modernizes the aging weapons that the United States can fire from missiles, bombers and submarines.

It is part of a nationwide wave of atomic revitalization that includes plans for a new generation of weapon carriers. A recent federal study put the collective price tag, over the next three decades, at up to a trillion dollars.

ummmmm a trillion dollars over three decades for a vital piece of the military.... you need something else to bitch about.

That's still more than, say, the sum total of all government-funded scientific research.
