This isnt like smartphones where there are new higher resolution displays every year. The thing flies into space, orbits for a while, reenters the atmosphere, splits into dozens of bomblets and then just destroys a huge area. Or is dropped from a stealth plane and does the same thing. A 40 year old nuke will be just as functional in 30 years as a ten year old nuke is today. Once you cross the threshold of turning the entire planet into a nuclear wasteland many times over with unstoppable weaponry you dont need to keep shovelling money into developing harder better faster stronger.

And yeah, as I said America could get rid of 90%+ of its nuclear armaments and be an effective deterrent against everybody. It has a ****ing ridiculous amount of nuclear weapons of various types.

This episode of "This American Life" has a number of angles relevant to common Politics discussions, e.g. tyranny of the majority, decentralised democracy and accusations of bigotry, even a bit of UNIONS.

Cliffs: NY State school district contains a large number of Hasidic Jews, whose children do not attend pubic schools, instead attending private Jewish schools (yeshivas). For years, there's an unwritten deal that district won't investigate the yeshivas to see if they teach the proper curriculum, as well as give them some money for buses and things, so long as the Hasids didn't vote down the school budget.

But then a row arose over Hasid special ed kids, who would only get government funding if they attended a public school due to federal education regulations. Out of their annoyance, the Hasids organise to turn out en masse and bloc vote Hasidic candidates onto the school board. They promptly make significant cuts to the public school budget, and hire an expensive new lawyer to help close public schools, which are then sold to become yeshivas.

Lots of anger follows - public school families protest, the lawyers for the Hasidics yell a lot, including one particularly profanity-laden verbal assault, and there are instances of anti-Semitic behaviour. The Hasids then go on to accuse people disagreeing with them as being anti-Semitic, launching attack ads that reference Nazi Germany and saying that criticisms on them are based on old anti-Semitic tropes. As of today, they still hold power in the district.

Watching last night's episode right now. Also a really good segment about how the embargo against Cuba needs to go, which is sadly not on Youtube. Cliffs are...
- last week Obama renewed the embargo for one more year (who knew it had to be renewed every year??)
- Cuba is currently the only country on the list of countries embargoed by the Trading With The Enemy Act of 1917, after GWB removed mother****ing North Korea from it in 2008
- given that we trade with every other country in the world, many of whom have similarly oppressive human rights records (e.g. Saudi Arabia), it's difficult to make arguments about why we should still be singling out Cuba
- clip of Obama from 2004 talking about how it's time to lift the embargo

Honestly, that all sounds a lot like Ike's posts. Probably get more bang for the buck by spending a trillion over the next 30 years upgrading Ike's posts and dropping them on Chinese and Russian message boards.
