The talk about engaging with the world isn't just talk. In his first 8 months Obama has already broken the presidential record for most countries visited in his first year. He's hitting 4 countries in Asia in a week or two.

And 59 states, too! He really gets around.

Strange but true factoid: I've seen a Nobel Peace Prize winner naked, in person, not a photo.

No, I won't say who it was other than to point out that it was not Obama. Let your minds wander and wonder...

That 3 hour stop in Denmark to pitch Chicago's Olympic bid certainly made the world more harmonic and peaceful.

On the other hand, this comment is a valiant effort to save this thread...

Why on earth does the skin color matter? Or their financial standing, gender or age for that matter? Is this a demographic you hate?

How large of a portion of the 500 most influential people in the Democratic Party fit into this demographic? 80%? 90%? Will they be doing any whining on Fox News?

I do have to say I think the committee was ******ed for doing this, but the people who are using this to attack Obama (almost every Republican who's been asked about it) are pretty close behind.

Well, if they reflected your opinions about the committee, you don't think there would be a lot of "Arrogant Republicans attack and marginalize the integrity and ethics of a respected committee from a European nation"?

Is saying that Obama doesn't deserve the award and you that you wouldn't accept it in his shoes "attacking Obama?" If not, link to someone using the award to "attack Obama."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Common misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize
By The Associated Press (AP)

Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

I read a comment somewhere else that said it best, The committee put all the thought and seriousness into their selection that a group of teenage girls do discussing which hollywood star is the hottest while looking at posters and sighing.

#3) Lastly, I have to say, that this award was was totally worth it if only* to read the reactions. ****ing hilarious. And mostly predictable, and probably more hilarious for that reason.

*Edit: It was also worth it if it leads to world peace, ldo.

The defense seems to be coming down to his speech in Cairo. Does it matter that this was 4 months after he was nominated? If this is the only thing he actually did (to the extent that giving a speech is even doing anything) why was he nominated in February?
