Are you suggesting that depending on the list of nominees, that there is someone out there that could be more deserving of ANY award than Barack Obama??

1st. the award was not given to Obama for past achievments.
2nd. the people on the committee explained why they chose Obama.
3rd. who are we or anyone not on the committee to tell it what it's criteria should be in selecting the nobel prize winner.

I do believe and one of the committee members said that Obama's selection was in part a rejection of the way America has been doing business particularly in the last 8 years. I dont have a problem with that going into their decision making.

Let's see... There was Joe 'The Baby Eater' McCoy, That artist from Ohio who was building the rape tube installation.. Oh! And don't forgot the posthumous consideration for Pol Pot.

I agree though, when I woke up and saw this headline, I thought I had slept so long it was the first day of April.

I was/sort of still am an Obama supporter, but this a big wtf.

do you have the power to make it a reality ?? what have you done to promote that new world ??

based on your answers you may be able to get nominated next year.

i know there were worthy people who did not win.. there are with every award that gets handed out. being the prez (highly visable and powerful) did not hurt him .

Well of course it was not given for past achievements, as there really are none. Of course they explained why they gave it... As the committee is selected by the parliament which in turn is selected by the Norwegian people I feel I have every right to criticize what they do, as I feel is natural in any democratic process. Or you never criticized what any of President Bush's appointees did?

Of course it was given as a rejection of America's politics during Bush, that was pretty much the Reason Carter got it, and probably played a big role when they gave it to Gore as well.

And as you actually seem to think that Obama has done a lot of things to improve the world already I am not surprised that you do not have a problem with their decision making. People a little less blinded by rhetoric and the Obama-hype on the other hand have every right to question it.

this has nothing to do with bush.. he is not, nor ever was that important.

i believe part of the reason he was selected and a committee member echoed this is that his vision for America and path he wishes to take it and the world is much more inclusive, respectful and humane than the path America was on before he came on the scene.

the path to peace and the future played a role in his selection. a committee member also stated that this is not the 1st time they have chosen someone based in part on their potential for good.

I just woke up, saw the news, and read through this thread.

I put Fox News Channel on while reading it. They're focused on a high speed chase in Dallas and haven't mentioned the award yet. (obviously, they must have done so before the police chase started)

In all seriousness, this is going to make the Afghanistan decision much, much harder. ****ing idiot Norwegians, weren't there any unknown native indigent rights workers from Central America left to give the award to?

why does it have to be "rhetoric" and "hype" ?? is it because he wants to change the way things have been done ?? what he says could just as well be a "vison" and "promotion of american values."

Brady Named NFL MVP For 2009
In Unprecedented Move NFL Names MVP After Week Four; Reaction Mixed
October 9, 2009
By John Ward

New York – In a surprising move this morning, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that New England quarterback Tom Brady had won the 2009 NFL MVP award after only four weeks of the football season. Brady, who missed nearly all of the 2008 season with a knee injury, has led his team to a 3-1 record through the first four games. Observers say it is unusual for the NFL to award what is typically a season ending honor in the beginning of October, but many praised the move.

One league official said, “He’s sort of like Joe Montana and Brad Pitt rolled in to one person. Plus we really appreciated his comments about how he was going to try and win a Super Bowl for New England this year.”

In his announcement, Goodell made reference to New England’s poor, non playoff season in 2008, without mentioning Matt Cassell by name. “You remember what it was like as recently as last year. Brady has come back, and once again the New England Patriots are a team that must be respected in the league. We only hope that this award can help him in some way as he continues his heroic comeback.”

Sports Illustrated Pro Football Writer Peter King was thrilled with the decision. “Tom Brady is a great quarterback, leader and human being. I think I speak for everyone when I say we are lucky to live in the same country as he does. Commissioner Goodell and the whole NFL has made a really smart choice in picking Brady as the season’s MVP.”

Others were not as fond of the selection. Skip Bayless called the choice “indefensible” and said awarding the MVP with the season only a quarter of the way over was the worst decision since “Chamberlain made that deal with Hitler.”

Archie Manning was overheard saying “$#@!, both my sons have better numbers than Brady. Even Eli.”

Brady, who ranks 17th in the league in Passer Rating, and is tied for 20th in TD passes with Byron Leftwich and Kevin Kolb, has not had the statistical success to measure up to his 2007 season, but his impact on improving New England’s perception around the league is unmistakable. One concrete example of this angle of Brady’s greatness is the Pats are 3.5 point favorites on the road against undefeated Denver this weekend.

Brady was told of the award by head coach Bill Belichick this morning as he arrived at practice, and was said to be honored and surprised by the award. He had no public comment at this time.

It is Brady's second MVP, with the first coming in his historic 2007 season. The New England signal caller has also won two Super Bowl MVPs, and is married to super model Gisele Bundchen.

There will be a ceremony honoring Brady at halftime of the Patriots home game next Sunday against the Titans.

No, it's because it's a lot of fancy talk without any concrete action. Is it the attacks on northern Pakistan that makes him more peaceful?

While Bush had a speech impediment, it was always pretty clear what he wanted to do. Obama is ten times more eloquent, but less clear about what he will do.

Giving him the prize for his vision and "promotion of american values" seems weird, as that's really not doing anything. Giving people a prize for what they might do in the future or what you hope they will do is very odd to me.

And as I said in an earlier comment, I strongly doubt that he was not given the prize partly for being a non white, non-republican popular president that it will be cool to have visit us in Norway.

But it seems pointless to discuss it with someone not familiar with Norwegian politics or with the members of the committee.

What makes it rhetoric and hype is that he hasn't changed the way things have been done.
