Having read several Wallander books, I can say that the distinguishing feature of the Malmo region is the frequency of bleak, hauntingly beautiful murders.

Moore should really consider refocusing voters on what's at stake in this election and bodyslam a reporter.

A lesson on Roy Moore from his former law school professor

In law school, the arguments arose from what Disraeli called "falling into a deep groove of illogic and being helpless to allow reason to pull you out." If Moore's analysis of a case was tantamount to thinking 1 + 1 = 3, and his classmates reasoned otherwise, there was no backing down by Moore. The class was willing to fight to the death against illogic that no legal mind but one in America would espouse.

On the way over I flew MEM-NYC-CDG-CPH. I put "NYC" there because I flew into LGA and out from JFK. I took this routing on purpose because 1) I wanted to try the AF A380 (it's not terrible but the 77W is much better in J, as are all DL planes) and I wanted to see how Delta handled LGA-JFK transfers (I had heard they give you a cab voucher, but they called me a town car because I'm a big swinging dick I guess)

CDG sucks, connect in Schipol to get to CPH is the pro move imo. The KLM lounges are better too.

This is something that I've noticed about people like Moore and, to a lesser extent, Trump. They have one gear--go,go,go. No regrets, no second thoughts. They have some beliefs and an id, and that's plenty, no need for a second-guessing super ego. They are like principal Skinner: "Are the kids wrong or is it me?" but without the self-reflection.

It can be a recipe for success in certain endeavors. Sometimes it gets you the corner office or an appointment to be National Security Adviser, but most of the time it makes for a bad life littered with a trail of bad decisions (and often it makes for a bad life when resulting in "success".)

More from that article:

Quote:
As a preface, I share Justice Moore's devotion to the Ten Commandments and am thrilled for any public person to espouse the values we share. So are those who twice removed Justice Moore as Chief Justice: many are devout Christians.
...
Moore never won one argument, and the debates got ugly and personal. The result: gone was the fulfillment a teacher hopes for in the still peace of logic and learning. I had no choice but to abandon the Socratic method of class participation in favor of the lecture mode because of one student: Roy Moore.

Quote:
Three: The conservative cause is seeing fragile times. I serve an organization dedicated to promoting free enterprise, and desperately want to see change, including, as one of many examples, elimination of regulations choking our nation's spirit. To help this nation change, we will need senators who get along. Who can convince.
...

In Washington, Moore would be Senator Irrelevant, the poster child for stubborn resistance to common sense legislation such as repeal of ObamaCare and decrease in taxes, standing on some piece of sideways' thinking nobody in or outside the Swamp would respect.

A vote for Moore will be a vote for Doug Jones and against the conservative cause.

21-member Alabama Republican Party committee decides: we stand behind Roy Moore

hahahahaha

Quote:
“Judge Moore has vehemently denied the allegations made against him,” the chairwoman of the state party, Terry Lathan, said in a statement. “He deserves to be presumed innocent of the accusations unless proven otherwise. He will continue to take his case straight to the people of Alabama.”

She added, “We trust the Alabama voters in this election to have our beloved state and nation’s best interest at heart. Alabamians will be the ultimate jury in this election — not the media or those from afar.”

For those who can't hear it, at the end she said, "We appreciate you staying and coming and I'm glad you got more church than you probably had in the last 10 years."

Oh yeah, just some Alabama evangelicals holding their moral superiority over reporters while standing behind a guy accused of molesting 14 year old girls and sexually assaulting young women.

CDG is worse than AMS but it's really not THAT bad. you have to re-clear security when entering schengen which is annoying but the whole process is usually like 15 minutes from the time I step off the plane until I'm through immigration.

The problem with AMS is that you might get ****ed with irrops and end up on KLM over the water, which is the WOAT. AF also has premium economy, which KLM doesn't have, and for me that's as good as business (even though I'm 6'5" and fat I generally have no trouble getting good sleep on a plane).

Once KLM gets more 787s I might reconsider when flying J. Maybe.

The CDG schengen zone lounges are absolutely terrible, that's a good point. And I end up at a bus gate about half the time through CDG.

Can we make Alabama a territory and Puerto Rico a state?

To think we fought a war to keep them from leaving.

Alternate history theories about what would have happened if the South had been allowed to secede are fascinating. They were a largely agrarian backwards region while the North was industrialized and modern. The South wouldn't have ended up as a third word country, but it's likely they might have ended up as something approximating Mexico while the North ended up as something very similar to what we have today.

If we boot out the Southern backwater, we'll have slavery at our southern border by 2035.

Are you sure about that?

I thought that video from Admiral whoever proved this myth wrong.

There is some question as to whether we would have won WWII though... You also have to wonder how far to the west the Confederacy would have extended its territory... Like would LA and San Diego be in the Confederate States of America?

I'm also curious, if we let the South secede, would they have ended slavery on their own at any point in the last 150+ years? Is there any leading theory on this among scholars/historians?

My guess is we would have eventually fought a war over it, over the USA allowing slaves free entry and freedom, and the CSA demanding we send them back.

The North would likely have won, and we'd probably be in a similar place today except the wounds would be fresher.

But, who knows? And maybe this doesn't belong in this thread, anyway...
