Yes but the car would be sold less than the fees of it being impounded I am sure. I am trying to contact him right now - find his phone number

I'm confused as to how OP's suggestions don't all involve stealing a car and how he thinks they're good ideas anyway.

OP, what do your instincts tell you to do?

Now, do the opposite of that.

Contacting the buyer should be your LAST resort. Why would you want contact with someone you know is a piece of scum? As soon as you tell him the towing charges are in your name he will try to benefit from this. Contact the DMV and get something in writing to confirm you either ARE or ARE NOT the owner of this car. If you cannot be released from legal liability then the car is still yours IMO. They can't have it both ways.

It was his responsibility in getting the car registered in his name. All the debt of this towing company is on me. He probably didn't treat the car with respect as I did over the years. The car required a quart of oil per week and had a terrible oil leak

Good chance the engine locked up and the car is probably worth less than what I am going to have to fork out.

I just found his FB online and sent him this message.

"Hey I am the guy who sold you the Infiniti a few months back.

Yesterday I received a bill for over $300 on the car being towed and impounded. They picked it up at %^&%$#%^$%.

It seems as though you didn't hold up to your requirements of the deal in getting the car in your name and screwed me over a bit.

The fee is another $15 a day everyday it is impounded.

I need to know what you plan on doing about this. Do you plan on abandoning the car or do you plan on getting it out?

Right now It's all on me so I obviously need to know ASAP

Give me a call as soon as you get this so we can talk about this situation. If you plan on abandoning the car I will pay the fees and that will be the end of it.

Or I could possibly just take you to court, so it is very important to call me as soon as you get this so we can work something out.

Give me a call as soon as you get this so we both don't have to be stressed about it. *** *** ****. I really don't want to go to court but if we have to we have to.

I have your address and I have your DL # and DOB. So please do not try to avoid me.

Again Just let me know if you want to abandon the car or pay the fees and take full responsibility for all towing charges."

The only positive thing about that message is the entertainment value it provides us.

Oh, well this changes everything! Stealing the car now becomes morally acceptable.

No need to mention court unless he threatens to screw you in some way. All you should have done is explain the situation and ask what he wants to do. If he ignores you or don't like his response then do what you got to do.

I read it as:

"Hey bitch, where do you get off trying to screw me over? Can't you even buy a car right, you dumb motherfxcker. Call me after I'm done knocking boots with your mother or we're going to court. So you better catch up on your Judge Judy"

"I know where you live so don't even try ducking me or getting me stressed"

It should read more like:

Hey I am the guy who sold you the Infiniti a few months back.

Yesterday I received a bill for over $300 on the car being towed and impounded. They picked it up at %^&%$#%^$%.

They charge penalties for everyday its impounded, so give me a call as soon as you get this so I know what your plans for the car are.

I'm sure we can come up with a solution that will work out for both of us.

Love,
eeezzz

Of course not. That's why you have to come to us for advice on this.

You took a very accusatory tone and threatened court already. You mentioned how all this falls on you, giving him little incentive to care. You also escalated the problem past where it actually is for no reason. Why do you think he'll give you a good response to that?

It wasn't very good. Yes, it could have been worse...you could have threatened to kill him or have sex with his mom or that you really like tacos. But overall, that message probably wasn't so hot.

Love how the sentence where you talk about how well you cared for the car is followed by the fact that it leaks a quart of oil a week.

I always thought that the tow/impound yard would just keep the car and sell it if the owner never paid the bill. I thought that happened a lot, but most times the owners actually wanted to keep their car.

Yes but the fees would end up being close to $1,000 which the car is not worth and I would have to pay the difference.

I've definitely heard of people signing cars over to them so they don't have to pay the bill. However, OP can't legally do that since he doesn't own the car.

Find out if you can still do the notice of transfer thing and get it out of your name.

Towing company wouldn't tell you about that since you are an obvious sucker and are on the verge of paying them which is all they care about.
