He either made up that story or the company knew what he did and didn't want to bother with it. Laptop boxes come with the serials on them and they would have checked it against the computer's label.

No. He's taking the car to pay off debts that the buyer created for him (from OPs perspective). After paying impound fees, new title costs and repairs and the like, it's not like he is going to make any money on the deal. It's street justice. Legally right? Probably not. Morally right? Absolutely.

It doesn't sound like "reading" is high on sloth's list of things to do.

What great is that even in his hypotheticals he's commiting a crime. True its probably morally ok, and very unlikely to be prosecuted, but he seems to have some weird notion that the law obeys some type of "street justice" where if the outcome is "fair" there is no crime.

TS to give you a simple example that even you might be able to understand - if I sneak into your house and steal $50, you can't sneak into my house and take my watch worth $50. Yes, morally you are probably ok and the outcome is fair, but you still committed burglary.

So, the argument here is: Since some people (in fact, most people) commit some minor legal infractions, and in the large sceme of things it's probably not a huge deal, that must mean that ALL forms of lawbreaking are both: 1-equal, 2-perfectly acceptable. Amirite?

Um, no.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but most places require a valid driver's license plus proof of insurance in order to release a vehicle. This kid wouldn't have been able to claim it until it had insurance and someone with him to drive it....

it's still his vehicle tho.

I'm confused why you would want to pay over $1500 ($325 + $15/day for 3 months) for a car you sold for $800 and which isn't currently running.

That aside, why are you trying to steal this guys car? Who cares if he never put it in his name, it's his. If he wants to let the tow company keep it, that's his business, not yours.

If you want the car, contact the guy and ask him if he is going to pay to get it out of impound (he'll probably say no) and ask if he'd be cool with you paying the money and keeping it (he'll probably say yes). If he says no, then move on.

He sold the car 3 months ago, but it wasn't towed 3 months ago.

Urgh, OP. You handled the situation horribly. You are still liable for any tickets etc that the buyer incurred.
