Try applying pressure directly to the pixel, usually it will become unstuck and should be fine after that (may have to do it a few times...)

I'm in Vegas now on vacation. The 3G is fast and solid enough here to to four-table FTP over a Bluetooth tether connection. I watched a Stox video over it as well (the FTP software was closed at the time) and there was no skipping or pausing. I don't know if the network is that capable everywhere, but it seems the phone itself is.

Apple cautions that Edge connections can disconnect in the event of incoming calls, so I'd not play real money games over that (it's also probably too slow).

The thing that wasn't immediately obvious to me was that I have to manually tether the iPhone from the laptop each time. In other words, I have to go to the Bluetooth task bar icon, right click, select "Join a Personal Area Network", then select the iPhone. It also kept asking me to update my Bluetooth driver, though I have the latest one.
01-02-2010 , 05:49 PM
I guess it depends on the driver/bluetooth you use, but some bluetooth drivers automatically try to find known connections and then auto-pair them. I haven't looked into this too much since I don't tether that much, but it's probably worth looking into for you.

I'm trying to help my brother- in-law jailbreak his 3gs but he keeps getting sent into dfu mode after respring or reboot. I searched this thread and found that Gobbo and Wetleg had this same problem, but didn't see a solution. Any ideas?
01-03-2010 , 11:39 PM
Is your issue with getting into DFU mode so that you can restore or is it you're getting the jailbreak wrong constantly (and you know how to DFU to restore)?
01-03-2010 , 11:52 PM
Afaik, he can jailbreak fine. if he dl something from cydia and has to respring, or reboots the phone it sends him into dfu and he has to restore and rejailbreak.
01-04-2010 , 12:43 AM
I was having that problem earlier on my friend's iPod touch. If you run blackra1n again it kicks it out of DFU mode. He still can't install programs in Cydia and reboot though, so that's a pain in the ass.

I have an itunes/iphone question (coming from someone who has basically never used either of them)

I purchased a couple albums on my iphone and had been listening to them and charging my iphone only with an outlet, not usb (so not syncing). I may have synced since I bought the first album but definitely not since I bought the second. I recently synced and now the albums appear on neither my iphone nor my itunes anywhere. when I go to the itunes store and search for them it just asks if I want to buy them. any clue where they went? can I get them back somehow? I have the email receipt so I'll be pretty pissed if I can't get them back.

also any way to prevent this from happening?

thanks dudes

Someone spilled a few ounces of beer on my phone tonight. Everything works fine except for the ear piece. I can have a normal conversation if i put the phone on speaker. Any idea on what is wrong and how to fix it? I've had the phone for about 13 months, and I just checked and none of the water damage indicators are showing red.

Firstly, hats off to all those who made this thread what it is today, namely, C-Dog, LFS, The Engineer, et al. You truly opened my eyes!

If it weren't for you guys and your aprrehension-easing respones to the plethora of skepticism/caution-induced questions asked throughout this thread, I would have never jailbroken my iphone and made it as awesome as it is today. THANK YOU!!

With that said, I figured I'd give a little back to this thread and share what I believe to be are the must-have applications for jailbroken iphones, the addition of which make the phone SOOOOOOO much more awesome than it already it. I'm sure most, if not all, of this has been covered throughout the thread, but it might serve those who are yet to jb their phones/add these apps and mods to see it all in one place.

Keep in mind, I don't bother with any of that SSH stuff (simply because I'm still new to the jailbreak and haven't learned yet), so all of this can be added to your phone with minimal effort

Action Menu

This is SO convenient. It adds a 'Favorites' section to your copy and paste menu. You simply double-tap where you're going to add text, select a favorite, and viola, no need to type it in. This is amazing for things such as usernames, passwords, and email addresses

Categories

Does what it says: It allows you to create categories for the icons on your springboard. This is great for those, like me, who have like 10 pages of apps and get annoyed having to scroll and scroll to find what you're looking for. For instance, I have condensed 10 pages of apps into two, neat pages. The first has all my mains (obv), while the second has four category folders: Jail Break Apps, Games, Books, and Misc Apps.

Cycorder

This is a must-have for those of us non-3GSers. It adds camcorder capabilities to the pre-existing camera. The quality is great, the allowable length for videos seems pretty long, and it couldn't be easier to use.

Cydelete

You know how you can delete normal icons/apps by holding them down until they wiggle and then pressing the 'x'? Well this allows you to do that to jailbroken apps too. I guess you can't do so otherwise.

Five Icon Dock

Another one of those does-what-it-says-ers . It allows you to add a fifth icon to your otherwise four icon dock. Really great, imo. Previously, I had my phone, email, safari, and ipod in my dock and was always like, "damn, I wish i could fit my SMS in there." Now I can

Iconoclasm

Along the same lines of Five Icon Dock, this one allows you add additional rows and columns to your springboard. It looks pretty sick if you combine
'5 rows x 4 columns' in Iconoclasm with 'No docked icon labels' in WinterBoard. Very sleek!

Flashlight

This turns your iphone into a legitimate flashlight that actually enables you to see in the dark. Go figure! Prior to jailbreaking, I thought I had the best flashlight app in the app store, but this is one like twice+ as bright.

iRealQuickSMS

This is another absolute must-have! It allows you to send a text while using any application. Recently, before I jailbroke my phone, I was studying for finals, using my nifty 'Flashcards Deluxe' app (an app store must-have for any student), and I became so fkn annoyed by the fact that I had to close out of it each time I wanted to reply to or send a text. I was literally pissed off at one point because of this. Anyway, this app allows you to send a text from any app by simply pressing the volume button and tapping the screen. A text box will pop up and there you go. Amazing. As for replying to a text while using an app, iRealQuickSMS has a quick-reply option, although I prefer 'QuickReply for SMS' for that handy task.

QuickReply for SMS

So you're playing your favorite game and you get a text. Do you ignore the text and continue playing, or do you close out of your game, open up SMS, reply to the text, close out of SMS, re-open your game, wait, and resume playing? With this must-have, quickly reply to the text without closing out of anything... ergo, no dilemma. WTF didn't Apple include this to begin with?!

Backgrounder

Used in conjunction with Kirikae, this is the iPhone's bitch slapping of the Palm Pre. Backgrounder allows you to run apps in the background while you use others, e.g. open Pandora, get some music going, then place it in the background while you play Scrabble

Kirikae

This is sick because it allows you to see the apps you have running in the background so you can switch between them. Another one of those mods, the exclusion of which from the stock iphone, kinda makes you scratch your head.

MultiIconMover

Again, another head-scratcher. This does exactly what it says it does, it allows you to move multiple icons at once. God, I've wasted so much time shifting icons around my damn 9-page-long springboard...

PkgBackup

Absolutely essential. If, and when, you restore your iphone with the intent of re-jailbreaking, this app will come in very handy. It backs up ALL of your jailbroken packages, all of them, and saves the info as a contact in your phonebook. After you do that, simply sync your phone with itunes in order to sync your contacts, and go through the restore (where the phone ultimately syncs with itunes to get all of your stuff back on it) and jailbreak steps. Now, download PkgBackup from Cydia again, open it up, and press 'Restore.' It's as simple as that to get ALL your packages back onto your re-jailbroken iphone, which would be a burdensome bitch otherwise. I did all this **** today because my phone was acting weird, and it PkgBackup worked like a charm.

SBSettings

This allows you to control various aspects of your phone with a simple swipe of your finger across the status bar (top of the screen). That swipe drops a menu through which you can easily power down/reboot your phone, turn on/off wifi, 3G, airplane mode, or bluetooth, control your phone's brightness, and a bunch of other stuff. You can also add a percentage indicator next to your battery in the status bar, which I think is pretty cool. It's probably most handy for reducing clutter, i.e. hiding icons, particularly the icons of apps that sort of just do their thing without any need for an icon of any kind, despite having one anyway.

SnapTap

I've always found the functionality of the camera to be somewhat user unfriendly. That little button at the bottom-center of the screen is arguably the most awkward thing ever. Well, SnapTap alleviates the aforementioned annoyance by allowing you to take pics by pressing either of the volume buttons, which are otherwise functionless while the camera is in use so don't worry about that. Very awesome.

SpotBright

Apparently that search menu to the 'left' of the home screen is called the Spot Light. Kinda lame, but w/e, haha. Anyway, SpotBright diplays miniature icons your six most-used apps right beneath the search bar in your Spot Light for easy access.

Stack

Another cool organizational app. Stack creates an icon in your springboard on top of which you can 'stack' various apps. It's actually really awesome and I have it as my fifth icon on my dock. My stack appears as Safari on my dock, but when I press the 'Safari' icon, a curved-looking stack pops up containing WinterBoard, Cydia, the App Store, Settings, and Safari, all of which are fully accessible. Used in conjunction with Categories, Stack has made my phone awesomely sleek and organized.

StatusNotifier

A cool little mod, this adds little icons to your status bar which notify you of text messages, emails, voicemails, etc. Obv this is great because the status bar shows when the iphone is locked. It's nothing super-amazing, but I like it.

Universal Search

Tbh, I seldom used the iphone's search function prior to downloading UniversalSearch, so I can't really comment on the extent to which it ran searches, but I imagine it searched only that which was contained on the phone itself, contacts list, emails, apps, etc. Well with this, when you type something in the search bar in Spot Light, not only will your phone search its entirety, but it will also display search engine icons in case you want to search for something online. Essentially, you can use your Spot Light not only to search your phone for something, but to search online for something as well. No more opening Safari, the Google app, or Wikipedia. UniversalSearch has definitely increased my phone's functionality.

WeatherIcon

This is a neat little mod to the preexisting weather icon on your springboard. However, instead of displaying a consistent sunny 73, or whatever it was, it now displays the actual temperature in your city.

WinterBoard

I'm sure this needs no explanation, but it's probably the reason most people jailbreak their iphones. Basically, it allows you to fully customize your phone, from the lockscreen, to the sliders, to the battery, to the springboard, to the sounds it makes when you press various buttons. As far as themes are concerned, I like Smoog.

YourTube

This one is great. It adds an icon to the upper right of your screen when you open up YouTube which allows you to download videos directly to your phone, instead of simply streaming them. Absolutely awesome before trips, or if you just want to avoid the future loading times of videos you know you're going to watch again at some point.

There you have it, an unorganized list of must-have apps and mods for your jailbroken iphone. I'm sure most of you have many, if not all, of these, but perhaps not Moreover, hopefully a naieve, adventurous iphone owner will stumble across this thread, and ultimately this post, and finally decide to utilize the potential of his or her iphone.

Thanks. I only tether on vacations and then almost almost always use the USB connector. The Bluetooth connection is great for when my wife wants to use the laptop, as I can take the iPhone into the next room with no noticeable decrease in speed. As long as I can manually connect, it's no big deal.

I did check the Apple site. It says:
  • Update your Windows computer's Bluetooth drivers.
  • Try to pair your iPhone to your computer manually.
  • Use the iPhone USB cable for Internet tethering instead of Bluetooth.
Less helpful than they usually are.

The Apple forum at http://discussions.apple.com/thread....rt=0&tstart=60 has had a lengthy discussion about this. It seems these Vista users have the same issue I have (or worse). I guess we PC users don't get auto-connects, but the manual one is easy enough.

why is apple against jailbroken phones when it seems like the applications it allows are a must-have?
01-04-2010 , 02:11 PM
Because they can't charge people for said apps.

Its probably a newer 3gs, they don't Jailbreak perfectly. They require a rerunning of black rain after reboots. I don't think there is a solution yet.

Yea, what he said. All you have to do though is plug it into your computer and rerun the blackra1n.exe assuming that's what you used to jailbreak it initially.

Thanks for the help guys. Strange thing is mine was bought after his and Ive never had that problem.

Little bit weird, but probably just coincidence. I.e. the newer stock got put in front of old stock as they are the "same" to anyone not trying to JB. Your brother gets the newer version but you get lucky and grab an older box from the back of stack.

I think some of it is because they want revenue from the apps store.

I think some is also that users who are not tech-savvy will either brick their phones or will otherwise make them less functional. These people will expect Apple to fix it. Problems caused would then reflect poorly on the iPhone.

Another issue is that, rather than either improving their infrastructure to handle the capabilities of the iPhone or limiting sales to match their existing/slowing improving infrastructure, AT&T instead chose to cripple some iPhone features to bring it down to their existing capability.

Also, Apple has had success in keeping their products closed. Their computer operating systems are more robust than Windows mainly because they don't have to design for a bunch of third party apps, for example.

IMO, the current situation is okay (and was better than that until Apple came out with the lastet iPhone jailbreak prevention hardware that requires tethered reboots). With this, we tech-savvy users can jailbreak our phones and use them to their full capability without killing the business model. Also, if everyone were to tether their iPhones, we can be sure AT&T would stop looking the other way regarding the relative few (on a percentage basis) who do now.

which is the best canadian cell phone provider?

Also interested in knowing who the best provider for the iPhone is in Canada. My contract with Bell is up in a month and I don't really see any reason not to get an iPhone.

is it possible to change your plan after you sign a contract with a company?
