Also when the hell are they releasing the damn Car Setup. Hopefully you can buy it without the stupid App.
I think most other GPS apps are around $50-70. Still a huge premium for the TomTom app but I hear it's better too. Navigon is $70, Sygic $40-$80, iGO $80, and xRoad $40 per half of the US. Personally I'm going to wait for reviews.

I think the $10 ones are subscription based ($10/month usually).

As said i've got the UK version of the TT.

It works flawlessly but i've not fully tested it in places that i'm completely unknown to.
The roads are all up to date and does the same route as my TT one.

Very happy with it.

The only reason to get the Tom Tom GPS or any GPS app on the iPhone as opposed to just using the iPhone GPS app is for when you are in bad service areas correct?

TomTom has turn by turn directions, voice, and will automatically correct your route if you leave the current one.

Although xGPS for jailbroken phones is decent enough at doing all that for free.

No real effect to battery except from additional usage. I wouldn't think it affects standby more than 5% and considering that my phone runs out because of usage not excess standby time, not an issue.

Security risk is meh. I waited until after 3.0 to jailbreak for similar reasons, but since doing so am loving it.

If there is a difference in battery due to jailbreaking its small enough that its completely unnoticeable. Maybe some exhaustive test can show that the battery drains slightly faster, but in real life usage it is a non issue.

Voids your warranty as well. Just not for me for the sake of customized icons that looks smart for the first 10minutes.

I jb my 2g when there wasn't an app store to get the games and other apps they had on it at the time. Now with the apple apps store it's far better and I don't need to use any of the jb apps.

The arguments against jailbreaking are pretty much completely non-issues. Jailbreaks are easier than ever (save first web-based jb) and if you find 2 things about jailbreaking which you like (non AT&T tether & sbsettings) then it's worth the trouble.

There are also apps that Apple won't release on app store (like Google Voice app, for example) that is freely available on cydia.

Oh, and it makes the bitches swoon.

Here's three things you can do with a jailbroken phone that you can't do with a stock phone.

1. Backgrounder
2. wifi only apps over 3G
3. PDAnet - tethering
08-20-2009 , 03:39 PM
Yea, tethering and xGPS are the 2 main reasons I JB my iphone. There's really no reason not to.

Civilization revolution is a really good port now on iphone for $5. It's basically the full console game. Highly suggested for fans of the series.

OK, I give up, I'm going to jailbreak. But I have two questions that I know should be clear from what I've read here and elsewhere, but that continue to confuse me:
  1. To jailbreak with redsn0w I gather I have to go back to OS 3.0. Doesn't that render the phone (3Gs) vulnerable to the SMS hack that was fixed in 3.0.1?
  2. If OS 3.1 fixes the AT&T tethering hole, and I choose to install 3.1 and re-jailbreak, is there a jailbreak app that will (probably) still allow me to tether? And while we're at it, right after jailbreaking (with OS 3.0 or 3.0.1), will I still be able to tether without installing an app, or do I need to do something else?

1) You can jailbreak 3.0.1 - but not all jailbreaks will work. I believe only redsn0w 0.8 will work. Here's a guide:

http://www.iphone-hacks.com/2009/08/...-with-redsn0w/

and a video:

http://technorati.com/videos/youtube...%3DDQRaw3gmMO8

2) Most likely jailbreak tethering apps will still work in 3.1 - if they don't they will likely be updated to work with 3.1 shortly afterwards. And yes, you can still tether without an app under a jailbroken 3.0 or 3.0.1 if you can now.

I bought it in the app store for $3 before it was pulled (AT&T doesn't like google voice, apparently). After it got pulled from app store they put it up for free on Cydia

try searching NFL 2010, i was looking for Madden but couldn't find it. 3.5* rating over 450 reviews. i think ill hold off till i hear reviews from these guys.

Madden on the iPhone won't be out until next month. I'm not sure why there is a delay, but I'm really looking forward to it. I think it will be as good or better than the PSP version.

I've heard that the NFL 2010 game is crap. It looks good but I hear there are some major gameplay flaws.

guess ill wait for Madden.

GTA fans i think we've finally got what we have been waiting for. Gangstars: West Coast Hustle. Ive played three missions so far and am pretty stoked on the game. After Car Jack Streets left me uninterested, this game came outta nowhere a few hours ago. Its going for $7 now but well worth it.

Maybe now RockStar will be forced to come out with something.
