Complete nitpick here but this guy is not a serial killer. He's a mass murderer.

There are similarities but this type of thing tends to be more anger/rejection driven, and ends in suicide far more commonly than a serial killer. Killing is to get revenge for perceived injustices.

SKs are driven more by a desire for complete control and sexual drives fused with aggression and entitlement. Killing literally gets them off.

This is necessarily a somewhat simplistic reduction but there are distinct differences between mass murders, spree killers, and serial killers.

Manifesto is pretty much exactly what you'd expect after seeing the videos. It reads like a parody or a really poorly written attempt at what a lonely virgin would write before he committed a mass murder.

I'm reading the last part and he does mention talking like this to his parents. They were disturbed by his rant and arranged for him to see his psychiatrist (apparently this was nothing new for him). After seeing him he dismissed his advice as useless like all the others. He ended up recieving a prescription for a drug called Ripseridone, but after researching it decided against it. I just looked it up now and it's a drug that treats patients with Bipolar disorder / Schizophrenia. He mentioned earlier that he legally purchased one gun with ease, then later on closer to the end he talks about buying a third, so I assume he bought the second one legally too. I know gun control is always a touchy subject when these tragedies occur because nobody wants to seen exploiting something like this for political gain, but when people speak about common sense background checks, this is why. This is exactly the kind of person with documented mental health issues who would be denied during the screening process.

Talking about fixing the mental health system is great and all, but there aren't any real practical solutions that I can see. This guy had access to the best psychiatrists and doctors money could by but was so deluded that he ignored their advice and refused to take the medication he needed. His Mom even had the police come out a week before the shootings because she was alarmed by the videos he was posting. They came out, asked him if he was feeling suicidal etc., he assured them there was a misunderstanding and they left - meanwhile he was in the final stages of plotting out his perverse murder fantasy which would have been foiled had they simply walked into his bedroom.

If somebody doesn't accept help they aren't going to get better, and unless we do something nuts like lock up anybody who seems a little loony in a mental institution, people like this (ok, maybe not quite like this guy, but you get the point) are going to be out in society and there's nothing we can do about that. Surely though, we can do everything in our power that doesn't infringe on the rights of normal individuals to take away the tools at their disposal to committ these mass murders?

So he would just buy a gun from a fine citizen. Legal or not, mental background check or not, makes no difference to a person wanting to acquire a gun in the US. If it cant be bought from a store, you go to a person who sells them, like every single illegal thing in this world.

Regardless, surely a barrier or two to delay or discourage him from committing an unspeakable act like this would have a net positive effect on society?
