?? Spideroak, one drive, Dropbox? FYI these are not all Google.

Also, trusting every single photo you have ever taken, some are probably pretty important, to two devices, both which are commonly dropped, and easily stolen is super super dumb. Your laptop has a mechanical drive?

If you don't want Google to have more information than is "needed" I think you might not want to use Google services. For example, Android OS.

What's the best way to create a invoice on phone? Nothing fancy but organized, that can be emailed and opened on a computer or phone

Lol, also Google doesn't give a **** about you personally. I don't get this attitude. Like Google is just spending their time and all their employees are looking through *your* photos.

I don't doubt that, but if they get hacked then my information is out. Also, what if internet just doesn't work? I'm not trying to handicap my music at the mercy of an internet connection.

Good thing I have had technical savvy from installing dos programs for my technologically unsavvy family since the early 90s or you guys' elitist scolding about the ****ing cloud would really hurt my feelings!

I just put all my mom's music on the cloud. She couldn't figure out why she didn't have room left to install system updates.

Keeping music local to preserve data I get, not backing up to a cloud is pretty risky. If you are really privacy-conscious check out https://spideroak.com/ for realz and honestly.. iCloud.

Also, while we're on it, what exactly is Google's motivation for free storage? how the f are they gonna target ads for me based on selfies?

There are a lot of freely available google Doc templates for invoices. You could start with that, although I am sure there are some apps out there which are better suited to invoicing on the phone.

Trying to negotiate with sprint for black Friday deal on the Bolt.
1/2 price til Friday night if bought online.

Trying to trade my m9 in and get basically the same phone for half the price.

Should be a huge camera upgrade coming from an m9. HTC internet text reflow is second to none, don't know why they don't focus on good software across the platform, their music app is good too.

I tried for a few hours last night. Trying to use docs in the browser takes you to the app, and I can't figure out how to get templates on there. The Google sheets app has one, but can only save as a pdf or excl, is that convenient for most pcs n phones?

Wow,I'd never had thought sprint was this bad at trying to make a sale...

Was told earlier this week I could trade in my phone for an upgrade early,(I've done it several times over the years,I thought I was special :/)

Didn't really think about it til I saw the black Friday specials, then I decided to inquire about trading in and getting the HTC Bolt.

Well, the css had no record of my offer,so they said they could have me pay off my contract and then I could trade in my phone and get the new phone.

So,pay off my phone AND give it back?

I thought I misheard their offer, but no,I could pay off a $700 phone, trade it in for 75 bucks and sign up for a new phone with new payments.

Gtfo ....

And they'd credit my account that 75 bucks within two billing statements...guaranteed!

Double gfy...

any recommendations on a camera app(paid or free) ?
Specifically one that has good 1080p video recording that wont overheat the phone(nexus5x) if it records for 30-45 minutes.

Anyone bring their own phone to Verizon? My dad wants his 1st smartphone but is determined to stay on VZ and is budget conscious. Lots of horror stories on Motorola forum of them being d**ks to people trying to activate their Moto G. I guess he could just get the G-Play Droid that VZ sells for $85 but man, f**k them.

Hi thread, I just switched to Android (got a Galaxy S7) after eight years of using an iPhone, mostly because my last phone was getting painfully old (iPhone 4S) and the S7 had better deals over the weekend.

Curious what advice you guys generally give to new Android users for must-have or recommended software for communication/browsing/making your phone more useful/etc. So far the coolest thing I've done is figured out how to do is use widgets, so I have a feeling I'm missing a lot.

Minor annoyances so far:
- phone screen doesn't light up when I get a notification so I have to press a button to see what it is
- lock screen notifications seem to have a fixed size - when I get a notification from the New York Times app, as an example, it's usually a ~2 sentence description of a major story. On iOS it would display the whole thing, on my phone it's just one line with "..." at the end and you can barely tell what it's about without opening your phone

Googling stuff like this it seems like the solution is generally "install our NEW LOCK SCREEN APP that will make your lock screen WAY COOLER!" and coming from iOS I'm so far wary of using custom software to replace things usually done by the OS, but perhaps more time spent with Android will diminish that wariness.

You must have ve a notification led with différents colors depending on the type of notification.
Since it's a Samsung phone it must be an amoled screen so you should be able to use an app for persistent notifications i dont remember the exact name but it was introduced by motorola on the moto x.
As for the notification size i ve no clue since it has never been an issue for me

Bingo, this was the hardest thing for me to get used to switching to Android. You're accustomed to wanting the shiny legit sanctioned version of everything. But once you get used to it, you can really find so many gems out there.

I've been enjoying an app called Ambiturner on my Pixel. You can set it to show the ambient display (shows notification tray using very little battery) when you either wave your hand over the phone or tilt it up from a horizontal position.

I believe Google just added lift to wake and double tap to wake on the Pixel. Maybe you haven't got the OTA yet.

BTW after TWO - yes 2 - failed FedEx deliveries, I ordered a 3rd to a different location, and I will FINALLY be getting my Pixel on Saturday!!!

I'll try it, but this is the sort of thing that keeps me wary about the Android ecosystem, running on a million different OS versions on a million different kinds of devices:

This is a known Samsung-bug; Please go your system settings, select "Apps" --> "All" --> Samsung TTS engine --> Disable. If this isn't working, go to your system settings, "Accessibility", "Talkback" (make sure it's disabled), "Settings", and *uncheck* all options you see here.
Should probably wait until I'm not at work before finding out if this will be a problem.

Thanks for the recommendation, hopefully it works well!

I'm not 100% that it's the same on Touchwiz as on stock, but there should be a setting to enable this - probably somewhere in: Settings -> Display, it's called "Ambient Display" on stock Android phones

Drag down on a notification to expand it

I wouldn't bother with 3rd party lock screens - they can't have the same level of security without adding a second lock screen (since you need to use the built-in lock screen for pin/fingerprint/etc). But as far as things like Calendar or Weather widgets, or launchers (Nova or Action Launcher), there is a lot to explore with 3rd party offerings that are improvements on stock.

The only option like that I see is for the S7's "always on display" feature - instead of the screen being off, its ambient state is to show a black screen with a clock, battery level, and minimal (only icons and only for built-in apps, not even Gmail) notification info. I disabled the AOD because I don't really like it, but even with it turned on the lock screen won't display for notifications.

This sentence probably improved my quality of life more than any other I have read in 10 years on 2+2, thank you sir.

Reminds me of another annoyance - trying to place a typing caret in a specific position in the middle of text seems very hard. When you move a caret on iOS, it pops up a magnifier above the caret so you can see its precise location. On Android, the caret is hidden under your finger so you're kinda guessing. There a fix for that? I've been all over accessibility/display/input/etc settings and haven't seen anything.

this one is more a feature allowed by your type of screen.
since your screen doesnt need power for black pixels, google made a cool feature when they owned motorola, it allow to display notifications at a low power cost on screen.

Now i ve no clue if this one will work well or not but it s worth a try at least.

you got it backward, if you think after months of using an android phone you wouldnt miss a ton of stuff when using an iphone, the difference on android is that you can find some simple workaround easily or you can limit yourself to what samsung designed like you would on an iphone.

Pro tip try swiftkey keyboard(now available on ios)
you can change your launcher or lockscreen if you want, it s not a limitation of the system it s the opposite.
