Why did the Borgata not reconcile the chip totals at the end of each stage. So basic
Stage 1a 1200 entries times 20k. Bagged totals would be 24 million chips in play. Nobody took the time to reconcile the totals. Negligence

So...what happens to the Event 1 trophy? If it has not yet been claimed, can I have it?

Well if the bagging is done correctly the dealer must verify the count before the bag is closed. That's how it use to be done.

imagine some ''crazy '' judge or the commission says that every 1 of the 4500 people that signed up had a chance to win 1st place money and due to borgata's negligence and or involvement they were not afforded that chance. and borgata has to pay every single person 1st place money...how awesome would that be?

if i was in this tournament i'd be talking to a good lawyer and seeing if there is a way to make borgata pay me 1st place $..

To all of those suggesting a split for the final 27 involving ICM, keep in mind that the final solution needs to appeal not only to avid tourney players who know what ICM is, but also recreational players in the final 27 and the general public. This has been a news story picked up across the country, and if I'm the Borgata, the solution needs to:

1. Cover me legally.

2. Satisfy NJDGE.

3. Preserve the Borgata brand's reputation to the general public (ie easily explainable in a 30 second story in a local TV newscast or in a 300-word news article.)

4. Fairly compensate the final 27.

5. Provide some form of restitution for those out of the money.

6. When 1-5 are met, minimize the costs.

To me, a good solution would be:

Catch any remaining cheaters, kick them out and press charges to the fullest extent of the law. Release their names publicly and the degree to which they cheated, how they were caught, etc - provide transparency. Pay the remaining players 27th place money, then do a straight chip chop of the rest. The general public can understand, "they split up the remaining prize money based on chip counts."

Refund everyone who bought into the event. You're talking 1-1.5 months of poker room revenue. It hurts, but it's probably a +EV move for Borgata in the long run anyway to preserve its reputation and protect its future tournament series, which bring in TONS of revenue for the poker room.

Finally, I'd offer the remaining honest players from the 27 a freeroll for the trophy and the ~300K in house fees from the event. Thus, they would have taken steps to protect the players financial interests and preserve the "competitive experience," for the remaining players.

Finally, I'd release a statement about how I was going to improve procedures to prevent cheating in the future.

Most of us have not lost sight of the fact that the Borgata runs a great tournament and has for many years. I know that's not a universal sentiment, but close enough that the Borgata is considered the best poker venue on the east coast, if not the country. A player or group of players would only attempt to introduce counterfeit chips into the game with a guarantee this high. Therefore, I'm not surprised it happened in a relatively low buy-in compared to the money at stake in the guarantee........nor do I blame the Borgata. I do believe, however that the Borgata has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure the integrity of the game. I really hope there is an arrest

It's around 15%...seems completely fair for a tournament with 4000+ entries. Winner of the WSOP Main gets like 12% IIRC.

The people in the Top 27 probably benefitted (unintentionally and without their knowledge) from the extra chips. Doing an ICM chop for them seems totally fair....they will all get quite a bit of money out of this. The people really getting screwed here are many of the people who busted earlier in the money. Some probably got very deep, only to be busted by people with fake chips and denied a shot at the real money. They probably won't get any additional part of the prize pool, and they probably won't even get refunds.

I agree they still get the big fields and until the last year I felt I got a fair shake but they began to water down the product. They started cutting corners. Why make people stand in line for an hour when they could be paying the rake at a cash game. They try and save $15 an hour on an employee an thus irritate people trying to register for events. Still it is the best venue around but it was evident during this event that they stretched themselves way to thin. 4800 entry fees is a lot of revenue for a casino in a floundering gaming city. Greed

which is why if i was 1 of these people i'd be going to see a lawyer, the cheaters and borgata's negligence kept me from winning 1st place money and even if i have a 1% chance of getting more money by going through legal system i am going to see a lawyer...not so crazy
