I don't have kids in school, nor do i teach...so I could be way off on this. But, I remember when I was in school, the class would be about to let out and the teacher would say, "btw, here's your homework" and it'd tilt me so bad cause I may have been sitting around half the day, bored out of my mind with nothing to do, and now they give me work to do specifically at home, with no need for it to be done only at home.

What that rant is suppose to mean, is that I don't like homework for the sake of having homework. Kids should have a workload, if it requires them to do some work at home, then fine. If the kid can wrap it all up at school, then there is no need to give him/her more work just so that can say "I gave them their hour of homework a night, I must be a good teacher."

Yeah, that would really piss me off too if this was taking place at my kid's school. I'm just blindly expecting that they are efficiently using every hour of the day for learning.

Another trend that seems different now is that there is much less physical activity going on today such as recess, PE, or 'gym'. I remember having like three recess periods a day and gym every day. Now, it's about a half-hour after lunch, and PE once a week.

Congrats Kev!!

Kev/others w kids who play poker for a living...How do you manage your kids while playing/etc. I am married, no kids, but often wonder what I would need to do if I had a kid(s). Wife works and wouldn't necessary want to quit her career to take care of kids. Obv she would stay home for year or so(?). I mean I guess we could hire a nanny or something but both of us working would probably benefit the whole family better.

IDK, I guess the best way is probably just adapting to the situation as it comes. It'd would be nice to kinda know what to expect tho.

Mjace: It's like any family with two working parents I guess. You have the added difficulty that you work from home; you need to make very clear that you actually work, and are not playing video games and thus available for occasional babysitting.

If you play poker for a living, then you won't have to worry about not spending enough time with the kid(s), so that's a good inherent quality about that lifestyle. If she stays at home and you play at home, I'm sure you'll have no problems finding the hours to play during the day-time, while at the same time spending a lot of time with the family. When she's back at work, be it after six months or two years, I'm guessing afternoon and night time won't fit very well for playing, as she'll want to get her hubby hours as well as have time to herself (ie, you spend time with the child).

My brother-in-law works from home and my niece goes to day care every day. I don't see why you'd treat it different. If you did, you wouldn't be a poker player. You'd be a stay at home dad with poker as a hobby when you find the time.

we always had table time, ie set time to do homework at the kitchen table in elementary school. From jr. high/middle school on we let them handle homework with the condition that if they got poor grades or poor homework grades they would be back to table time for the rest of the quarter and/or next quarter. they suck at doing homework just as bad as I did, so it's been a back and forth all through highschool.

I'll start of making 45-55k at the local schools where I grew up so thats $30-$40/hr starting, which doing something I enjoy and feel like I'm giving back I'm completely content with. I'll also have 3 months of the year to travel or do whatever I want including to continue pursuing poker, and if I'm ever making twice as much per hour at poker I can just go to that full time. Plus my girlfriend is an accounting major, who is working on becoming a cpa after graduation and will make bank. Ship the stay at home dad one time.
I hope it's everything your hoping it will be. I taught highschool for 2 years and it was easily the hardest job I ever had. I went from that to working 12 hour shifts at a computer chip plant and felt like I was on vacation. I didnt have to plan any lessons before I went to work, didnt have to grade any papers after work, etc, etc. I did really like hanging out with the kids that wanted to be there though.

My advice is to hold out for a job where you will mostly teach elective rather than required classes (ie physics not earth science, chemistry not freshmen biology). then you have classes full of kids that actually choose to be in the class and are alot more fun to be around and work with. Of course other teachers know that too, so it can be hard to get those classes right off and not have to pay your dues teaching a class with a bunch of idiots that don't wanna be there/do anything.

it's really only hard from the time they start walking/getting out of places till school starts. newborns sleep tons, then just roll/crawl around and take naps, pretty easy to find time to play. once school starts that frees up alot of time, so again easy. it's the 2-5 yo time thats tough. to get in much time I hired a sitter to come to my house 4 or 5 hours a day. I would get in half my time then, then work another session after the kids went to bed.

yeah, it seemed like she had a lot of homework until she figured out she could do it during school. Now that she's in high school, and actually taking some pretty hard classes, she doesn't have as much to do at home. We have always tried to make sure she does it so she can learn to be responsible.

I've worked from home during most of the past 3 - 4 years. Up until last summer, my daughter went to day care when school was out. Now that she's older (9th grade), she knows not to bother me while I'm working (most of the time). It would have been next to impossible to accomplish anything if I was taking care of her while trying to work when she was young.

Lacky - you are a lucky man if your kids slept all the time as infants. Mine was colicky and screamed all the time. The first time we slept through the night was a full year after she was born. I cant remember much from my life during that period of time aside from being half asleep all the time.
