FTR, I would love to see big tourneys and more focus on poker in the casinos. But I understand why it is not one of their priorities.

What else can the casinos provide that brings in people from out of the area?
I have a feeling unions are what keep major events away. I always heard HPT wasnt pleased with greektown

Table games and slots for sure. More people play those than poker.

But the casinos cannot fill the tables they have besides MCC when the BBJ is big. None of the rooms offer poker players anything to keep them coming downtown.

I agree, we are the bottom of the pecking order downtown. I honestly do not know how to change that either. The casinos know that poker players would like to have a big tourney series down there, yet they do not offer one. I am assuming that someone down there has checked into it and come to the conclusion that it is not in their best interest to do one.

Slot machines of course. They make the most $/ft-hr.

But for most casinos it's not a binary choice. Having a poker room pulls in players that wouldn't otherwise be there, who will occasionally play other games, spend money on food, and *bring their friends/family* with them. So while you theoretically lose some profit by swapping slots for poker tables, you're offsetting that cost be increasing your overall traffic.

When I see my parents and we take a trip to Atlantic City, they play slots and don't particularly care where we go, so I get to make the decision for all of us based on the poker room. Casino with no poker = no business from us.

Would be interesting to know how many of you guys strictly play poker and never spend a penny on any other games downtown?

I, for one, play/have played all different types of games at the casinos ( and enjoy them ).

When I go to the casino with my family, I will sit with my mom and play slots cuz that is what she enjoys. My brothers like blackjack and roulette and almost all the other table games. It is fun to just sit there and bull**** with them and try to win the casinos money instead of playing poker against them and trying to win their money.

Limited Space, slots/tables games all day. The big 3 dont have have that problem though. They have a ton of tables and machines that need feeling

Why is it different in Vegas for you?

I have gotten my ass kicked at blackjack in Vegas so I try to only play poker out there

When I play downtown I only play poker. But I do have a tendency to eat in the restaurants pretty often.

If I'm in AC or LV I'll sit and run some money through a slot machine at the end of the night while chain ordering 'free' drinks. Keeps my player points up, the free room offers coming in, and hey, booze.

When I go with family we tend to spend our non-gaming time together. Meals, stroll the boardwalk or strip, shows or concerts, that kind of thing. But none of them are really big gamblers.

Anyone ever been to Parx Casino in PA? Bravo tells me they got 2 tables of 6-12 O8 going on right now on a thursday. This peaks my interest, weekend trip anyone?

edit: Poker room rate $59

Nice to see that you have a family that enjoys the casino atmosphere.

I always felt lucky in that regard. My parents and brothers all like to play, so we tend to do family trips to casinos.

my family for that lol

That would be fun imo.

Rob, you do realize that O8 would be a lot more common in the Detroit area if Sevup didn't take all the money out of the games?

Edit: what is a poker room rate?

No. But I've heard a lot of good things. They're apparently drawing a lot of the Philly players that used to drive/bus out to Atlantic City. So I wouldn't be surprised to see O8 or 7-stud run on a reasonably regular basis.

A 9 hour drive is a little rough for a game like that though. You'll burn all your profit on gas.

Special room rate for poker players, usually contingent on you booking a certain number of hours in their poker room.

I'd rather save those games for the couple times a year I go for a week long stretch in vegas. I dont feel as bad if i lose money on other games when on a "vacation". but I would not want to get addicted to roulette or craps here, but really I have no itch to play them here for some reason, its weird.

The casinos pay a higher tax rate & the money goes to Detroit. You figure it out.

Exact same for me. I'd rather dump my money at the bar than play table games

I only play poker. I've never put a dollar in a slot machine or in the pit while downtown.

Played some BJ in Vegas, but it was so I could get drunk for free...or as free as it could be while playing blackjack.
