If that's the case, the state was making 2M per year in licensing fees not to mention the lost taxes and higher unemployment.

I'm thinking we need to find out why the MGCB and the Governor hate charities and hate money.

Could Dan Gilbert, MCC, & MGM have anything to do with that?

The rooms appear to be doing it to themselves.

Try finding out how much money casinos are spending on lobbying against the charity rooms.

MGM spent a ton of money blocking a casino in Port Huron. I am sure they will drop money to stop any competition (ever tho its only poker).

There seems to be some contradictions in here.

On one hand, people say that the casinos don't care about poker.

On the other hand, people are saying the same casinos are spending money on lobbyists to get charities shut down.

What gives?

I am saying that with exactly zero proof. I just would not be surprised if the casinos did do that.

Reason why is that when people drive downtown to play, they sometimes play other games also. Plus, they are more likely to bring other people with them. Hence, an all around better situation for the casinos.

Traffic in the room has picked up a bit. Tournament's have gotten a lot better, Cash games are good. I really wish you would give it another try. I will be over there this Sat. night At 6:30.(Jan. 26th). We are having the end of the month dinner. If you dont have any plans please stop by and have dinner with us. I would like to meet you and maybe get some ideas from you on how to make the room better. I will even buy u in the cash game. (unless you are barred from there)
I am not even close to being barred from your establishment.

That said, I appreciate your offer and would like to take you up on it. I am willing to give Mavericks another try with and open mind.

I do hope, however, that your bouyguard will not be joining us

If they just ran tournaments my gut tells me they wouldnt be so gung-ho on shutting them down. The cash games and especially the blackjack, roulette, craps and video gaming machines, that pisses off the state. Hard to get people to come and play 15 dollar blackjack when 1 dollar is on your corner.

The blackjack and roulette is a ****ing joke in most charity rooms, since a lot of them change the rules to those games.

The house already has the edge in those games. Crazy that they take an even bigger edge and even crazier that people still play lol.

Right that it's 'only poker' and it's 'only' the charities losing money and 'only' the public that are out of jobs and back on unemployment.

So what options do we have? The casinos don't care about poker players and we should have a choice of where to play. If they want players to come downtown, they need to provide a service that has some value. The BBJ is the only thing they offer downtown. Since they made it so hard to hit, it is really of no value to most players since they will never see part of it.

I would much rather my rake go to charities and small businesses that care about the players and do everything they can to cater to us than to the casinos.

I've never seen roulette actually run in a charity room. But those nudgemasters and BJ are another story. I've always hated running BJ as a charity. Only the establishment has a chance to make money and the charities take on too much risk due to variance in losing everything they made from poker for the day.

Roulette used to run all the time at Fisher Hall in Flint.

Caveman,

If you owned a casino, would you spend time, money, resources ect. on poker? It is well known that poker is no where near their bread and butter.

Yes, having a room that brings in some people that will play some poker (which is profitable but not as profitable as other games) and has some big tournaments that brings thousands of people from all over the country is a great idea. Detroit isn't a tourist destination so having something that will bring people in from all over is an excelent idea.

What else can the casinos provide that brings in people from out of the area?

Yes, your drawing in a group of people who wouldnt normally be there. Of all those tables running at MCC how many of those people plop a few bucks in a machine....plus they make money on rake.

Caveman and AtariRob,

If you had the chance to open up a place with limited space, would you fill it full of poker tables or slots/table games? Keep in mind that you are the one who gets to keep all the profits.
