Before Parx re-opened in Jan 2021, there was 5/10 NL running everyday pretty much, as players were coming from PA and out of state and getting comped rooms and poker rates. In April 2021 MGM merged the Borgata with their national computer comp system and everything went into the toilet.

IF YOU COMP IT, THEY WILL COME

So disappointed with this place, I hear a lot of pros are setting up shop close to Parx now.
It may in part be due to MGM policies being different than previous Borgata policies, but staffing problems are almost certainly a large part of it. While many of us are not getting free room offers for the Borgata, I for one have for the first time gotten free room offers for the Vegas properties (4 nights for their second tier properties, 3 nights for their top tier). That's from almost all poker play. Even at its most generous time during the downturn around 2008, the most I got from the Borgata was two free nights. So MGM is willing to part with some comps for poker players, although maybe not at the property they figure a player will frequent anyway.

Also, I don't think we can ignore the fact that while the Borgata may have had staffing problems that didn't seem to effect the comps prior to the MGM total take-over, demand was much lower in the beginning of 2021 and has been increasing during the year. For example, my return to live poker waited for the availability of the vaccines and me getting two doses which made me available in June. I suspect a lot of other gamblers followed a similar plan. The staffing shortages weren't a major concern until the demand increased and that happened to coincide somewhat with the MGM takeover. Would MGM have changed the comp policy anyway? Probably, but we really won't know to what extent until the Borgata is operating at full capacity. That may take another six months to a year.

Trip Report:

Nov 1 - 5
Arrived Monday with the wife (not a poker player).
Mostly night sessions after dinner with the wife, then a cigar.
I'm a 1/3 player with mixed profit results over the years.
Priorities in order: Don't go broke, have fun, make a few bucks.

Poker Room:
Nobody at the front desk, rarely at front podium.
Open seating --> No problem
Get on list --> Hand over players card and watch floor type in number with the end of a pen/pencil. Watch floor retype number and get told I would get a text. Cool, I'll head over to smoking section to finish cigar. Check back in 5-10 min and find my name flashing without getting that text. Shake head and lock up seat.

Most of the excellent dealers (IMHO) have returned and some are now floors as well.
Most of the friendly players (IMHO) have also returned, but so have some of the grumpy OMCs.
Only 1 GOMC was out of line enough for me and some others to scold/shame into a table change (he brought his chair with him to the new table)

NJEA convention time is my favorite time. Love playing with/against some of my colleagues who just come down to have fun, splash around and drink too much.

Poker room cashier is still closed almost every time I go in the room. Blame seems to go to MGM-Vegas management. Rumors are that the HR decisions are made there and they are partially responsible for some staffing issues. The dealers were good about coloring me up. I didn't have to hit the main casino cashier until the last night.

Had a great time playing. While I recognize there are issues to be addressed, I'm happy that things appear to be getting better and busier.

Rest of property:
We also took a trip to Bellagio in August and generated a lot to Tier Credits.
Maybe as a result, there was a great rate for this week and we booked a Fiore suite.
The wife loved the room and view. Unfortunately, I don't know if we'll see rates that low again, so I hope she didn't get too used to it.

Izakaya:
Took advantage of the reduced prices on Monday night. Had some old favorites and tried some new things. We had concerns about one dish, warm maybe undercooked chicken, and the waiter replaced it without a problem.

Bread and Butter:
It's my standard breakfast with my buddy when we go for poker trips. The wife agrees to go and for some reason there is a line that isn't moving and items that aren't available. We later see it closed in the afternoon and figure something was going on. Inventory? Staffing? Maintenance?

Amphora:
Wife is now a fan. Seems to be the same menu each time, but it's nice enough and fairly priced. I'm sure we'll continue going once per trip.

N.O.W.:
No trip with the wife without visiting the Noodle restaurant. Excellent as always. Quick and fairly priced.

Metropolitan Cafe:
Menu a bit smaller than I remember, but breakfast was fine.

MGM Sportsbook:
We likes just about everything on the menu. Drinks and food were all tasty. We'll be back. Wings will be a repeat order. We liked the other things we ordered, but as mentioned, want to try just about everything.

TLDR; Everything was fine. They aren't quite dead yet.

For some reason I never get texts either, even though I have a strong signal so I gave them my email which stays on file which I do rec've when I get called (same thing at MDL and Parx but Parx doesn't take emails).

The old guy bringing his chair to the new table was how we did it when the casinos first opened back up, not a lot of people played back then and don't know about all the cleaning and taking our own chairs with us we had to do. I would say the majority of the regs just came back within the past few months (or maybe they played back then and didn't like the safety measures so they're just coming back now to play).

The room is far from being dead, even though the old Borgata definitely treated us with a lot more loyalt but you're still gonna get rooms, you just have to check them almost daily at least and be ready to lock them up when they appear or they could be gone in hours. You have 48hrs to cancel but I've canceled the same day several time and didn't have to pay the fees.

On the plus side you can now cancel online and not have to call them.

I have this problem on and off myself. For some reason, sometimes my phone number doesn't get added when they add me to the list. So when you give them your card, just have them check to make sure its there. They can even send out a text to make sure the number works. This should solve the issue

They've tried sending tests, still didn't get it, and they confirmed my number was there. Email works fine at borgata, and parx is easy to see the board.

I've checked the past couple of pages, sorry if I missed it but how many players are they running at a table? And do they have the plexiglass dividers and all that?

8. No plexiglass. No mask requirement

They are solidly understaffed though, and it’s obvious. Fills take forever (table I was at yesterday was out of white chips for and hour or so) and the cafe seems to be staffed by only 1 person a lot, if it’s even open.

All the flop games are eight handed. I don't know about the stud games.

One ridiculous thing is Borgata isn’t publishing tournament results or sending to Hendon.

Decided to eat healthy and had a salad at the Chop place in the marketplace beneath the poker room. Spent the next 24 hours on the toilet. Never eating anything there again.

The poker games get better after 6pm fwiw.

Hi all,
Cage situation has been absurd. I basically avoid it as much as possible. I go weekends... Buy chips Friday, cash out Sunday. Last trip I lost and just took the $350 home in chips. I return today and won't have to go to the cage at all.

Regarding rooms... I've only played 1-3 since covid reopen. I've played 8-10 weekends including this weekend, and all were comped. In January/February 2022 I have 7 comped Fridays available, and 3 of them are comped the Saturday too.

I also never had a problem and I've eaten plenty of their salads, and also tuna sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, and hundreds of the yogurt parfaits.

Unfortunately, eating out has that risk no matter where you eat. All it takes is one employee to not wash his/her hands after handling raw meat, eggs or whatever, or after going to the bathroom and the odds of food poisoning go up. And based on what they get paid and the attitude and/or hygiene habits of some people, the odds of that happening are higher than most people realize.

Based on the percentage of people who leave the poker room restroom without washing, I think there is a much better chance you got sick from touching the cards or chips.

(can all you dirty m*********ers please wash)

Have witnessed people do the following and then immediately play hands (all post lockdown)
- put their hand in their pants to adjust themselves for a solid 10+ seconds
- bite their nails
- pick their nose
- sneeze into their hands
- kiss chips before putting them into the pot (get it, they’re kissing them goodbye, it’s so original and funny . Ha ha ha ha ha, they’re just too funny)
- eat food with their hands at the table, including licking their fingers

I’m sure there are more disgusting things that I’m forgetting.

Many poker players are just disgusting humans who have literally zero idea about how diseases are spread (that isn’t meant to be a covid specific statement).

Definitely a non zero chance OP got sick from something other than the food

Borg poker management caters to the pigs. There are other poker rooms that don’t welcome that kind of customer.

Sorry you got sick. Uncooked food is always going to come with higher risks. FWIW - don’t ever get bean sprouts in a salad anywhere. They are the most contaminated food.

I got so sick from eating at a different AC casino restaurant that I wound up in the hospital for three days.
