"Random walk down wall street" is a great place to start in my opinion

Also check out the bogleheads forum and resources. Bogleheads is like the 2p2 of personal finance.

And we wonder why there's so much wealth inequality. There are so many financial fish.
There are some companies where it's not that bad though.

Mine have doubled each year the past 2 yrs. No gamble no future.

Sure, if you decided ahead of time to work for a start up because you wanted lottery tickets then power to you.

I work for a FAANG, no way any of them will 10x again soon.

I don't work for a start up. We could be co-workers maybe. But based on what you've said I don't think so. 3 of those companies I don't much care for.

Dave Ramsey's greatest rants!?

But seriously Dave overuses the cash---asset reverse. It seems like he says you should sell your house; if you wouldn't buy exactly that house if you instead had a pile of money.

As far as gurus go, I don't know much about Dave Ramsay but Ramit Sethi's I will teach you to be rich was a game changer for me (stop micro budgeting flexible expenses and just have a monthly lump sum for flex, stop paying for anything that doesn't make you happy, automate as many regular transactions as possible).

But no guru is a replacement for learning the math of your situation yourself and having the guts to go for the higher paying work. Trying to work within a razor thin budget is exhausting, making more money while living modestly is the nuts. When I made less some months I would have unpleasant surprises. Now I have pleasant surprises (except tripping into a higher tax bracket this year and my wife not following through on what I told her to put for her withholding in Q3, oof).

I think Ramsey has probably helped some people but some of his stuff is laughably bad bordering on harmful. His insistence on using 12% return assumptions and his methodology of paying down debts is simply bad advice.

I tend to think focusing on bigger ticket expenses and cash flow is a lot more valuable than focusing on that$4 coffee. Suzy Orman has the same micro-expense focus which is fairly idiotic IMO

To be fair, Dave Ramsey's target audience is the Average American Consumer... someone carrying way too much debt and spending more than they make.

These people need to hear:

Step 1: At least $1k liquid cash in case **** happens
Step 2: Sit down with a paper and pencil and write out your income and expenses, and stick to a budget
Step 3: 3-6 months living expenses
Step 4: Pay down your highest interest debts first
Step 5: Max out your employer match, if applicable, and set aside for your retirement before you get your check, so you're living on less than what your employer pays you
?????
Profit

...over and over and over.

I prefer Clark Howard as a financial guru just because he's local and I grew up with him, but Dave Ramsey's schtick is solid advice for a ton of people

So there's some lawyers in here right? I'm representing myself in a family law matter against my darling ex wife and her feminist **** of a lawyer.

I just had an hour long phone conversation with the Guardian ad Litem and it occurred to me that this man is a hopeless moron.

I'm not really asking about the case, I'm just wondering if it should have been a red flag when a lawyer told me he only charges $75/hour.

He did tell me I'm going to win though. So yay for me.

Get a lawyer that has no ****s to give about your ex or her **** lawyer so you have someone in your corner that doesn’t have an emotion in the fight.

Good luck, only wish divorce court/lawyers on those you truly wish ill upon, everyone but the lawyers lose

Overall I agree. Although I think aiming to make more money is easier than micro budgeting, it's straight up not much of an option for 75%+ people. At the same time there's tons of high income people that screw up living within their means.

Ramit is definitely targeting the privileged millennial crowd haha.

Maybe non-sequitor, but the politician story of middle class having it tough is always working class family. Really I find it indicates a huge problem in society where it's tough for working class families AND educated young people can barely afford crappy 1-bedroom apartments and are being admonished by their elders about a couple hundred bucks a month spent on breakfast.

We've been divorced longer than we were married, but she is just still obsessed with starting fights with me. She says to me one day, "I want to put [kid] in therapy"

I said "why?"
She said "SHUT UP!!!"
So I said "No"

Then she got her feminist **** lawyer to say "[Me] is denying [kid] access to health care for reasons of spite" And they want the court to say I'm no longer allowed to make medical decisions for [kid]

The court appointed a GAL to look into it (Mr $75), and he said "nah, [kid] is fine, she just has a bad time at [Mom's] house because [Mom] and [Stepdad] are immature psychos and their household is bursting with dysfunction. [Kid] is thriving everywhere else in life, and doesn't have the same problems at [dad's] house.

Easy game.

PS [Mom] married her 4th at age 37. She has more rings than belichick. She's not easy to get along with. I dont' think I have to say anything in court. I'm definitely not going to pay some leech in a suit to sit next to me while [Mom] dumps her purse in court.

I believe his step 4 was pay down the smallest balance first without regard to the interest rate. Which is, of course, a joke...

But maybe he has changed his tune there

I mean the real loser here is your daughter. I'm sorry she has to go through this regardless of which of the "adults" in her life are causing the angst.

I think you're right

Feel better about the progress you're making and all, going from 9 huge insurmountable creditors to 5 in a few months

Definitely agree that interest rate >>>> total balance
