They can be, once you have experience. And publications. Your ability to condense your skills, knowledge, and experience into one page is an indicator of other abilities, though.

Asking about excel proficiency is one of my favorite interview questions.

I cannot count how many times someone told me they were a 7 or 8 out of 10 and failed our basic to light intermediate excel test we give.

Any decent interviewer will ask questions to challenge your basic understanding of sql. Depending on how sql-intensive the position is, it may include a few joins, but it likely wouldn't include statistical functions.

Knowing how to build a data set is literally step 1 in analyzing data. MANY PhD's are clueless when it comes to constructing hypotheses that can actually answer the correct question. About the same number aren't especially skilled at defining the appropriate question. Far fewer have any skills at posing a question that can generate actionable insights.

TLDR: Analytics is about storytelling using data. A good data set is step 1 of many.

Some of these I may have included in a job description also but for the most part my skills were just in a list.

lol, sorry DC, but you just lost all credibility without Python in that list.

Python is essentially the standard right now in most analytics/data science shops. You can argue R (statisticians will, code monkeys will say python), Julia might be a player soon.

The important point is, it's not the languages you know, it's that you know how and when to use them. Like, if I asked DC when he might use Toad vs Aginity, what do you think his answer might be?

This is me being a bit of a troll, but these are considerations you will figure out in the first few weeks on a job, and will depend on what your group's tech stacks look like.

One of the requirements is "basic understanding of SQL" though, so I feel like if it's not on my resumé, then I can't expect an interview. I fit all other qualifications.

What would I enjoy doing with SQL?

1) WTF is a "protein company?"

-Cargill sells a **** ton of hydolyzed proteins.

-GNC sells protein supplements.
-Tyson kills thousands of tons of chickens every month and sells their protein.

2) "Basis understanding" suggests you'd be building data sets from fairly clean data warehouse sources. So probably basic joins, maybe some coalesce, nvl function, stuff like that.

Pro tip: if you can do everything on the job description, you're overqualified.

Hmmm, and I thought I lost credibility by not including Adabas and Natural.

If you get an interview with Cargill make sure to ask them whether you will be working in a grain elevator. Also, demand stock options. If they won't give them, then walk.

You should just go ahead and read them; it's not like you have any plans for the evening, since admit it your family doesn't love you any more. We do though.

You're entitled to your opinion but should know you're wrong. You can absolutely answer questions with data using SQL.

Unless you're being a pedantic ***** and trying to say "the output of the sql answers the questions, not the sql" in which case lololol

I'm a confirmed excel fish, I can barely produce the most basic pivot table. Fortunately I don't have to use spreadsheets too often.
