I have decided to make reservations at Prime. We are staying at MGM, but dont plan to camp there the whole weekend, and this is a reason to head to another part of the strip. I looked at all of the menus that I could find and prices were pretty consistent for the things that we are going to order. I am not against a higher end restaurant, but I dont like spending over $100/pp and leaving still hungry. Fine dining isn't a thread I would hang in that much honestly. My wife is more finicky than my kids when it comes to food, but at least she likes steak, so that is our 'nice' meal out this trip.
We went to Prime for dinner on the 7th. I was impressed by the feel of the place as we walked in. Very nice, but not too over the top for a more casual customer such as myself. As we were headed to our table, the host noticed we were both dressed in black pants and changed the white napkins with dark napkins. I was immediately more concerned. Then we were seated with my wife on the wall side and me in the chair. The chairs with sides are not built for bigger people, and the host said he had armless chairs, but we just traded places. That ended up causing issues later as I could see the fountain show, while my wife stared at the wall behind me. You couldn't see much of the show anyway, we were on the back wall.
The next issue came up when the waiter asked if we had a water preference, and since this was the first time I had been asked this I had a deer in the headlights look, so he said house water, Fiji, Evian, etc., and we said regular water was fine. I wish I had been quicker, I would have said, "frozen, floating in Jack Daniels", but that will have to wait for another time.
For the meal, we each ordered an appetizer, steak, and side dishes. My wife had the bacon wrapped prawns, filet, and the yukon gold mashed potatos, while I ordered the crabcake, peppercorn ny strip, and mashed potatoes and creamed spinach.
The prawn appetizer had three large prawns, cooked perfectly on avocado slices with a nice sauce. The crabcake was a nice sized crab cake served on an apple slaw with pine nuts I believe. Very tasty, and larger than dinner portions of a crab cake that I have had at other restaurants.
Our steaks were cooked exactly as requested, and very delicious. The ny strip I had was as tender as filets I have had at other restaurants, and the small taste of the filet that my wife was willing to share was honestly the first time that I have experienced a steak that literally melts in your mouth. The sauces that were provided were excellent, I tried the peppercorn sauce first and it was good, but the chef's sauce with soy ginger and wine reduction was perfect.
So while we are not the type for fine dining all of the time, we will definitely be including at least one meal at a nice restaurant on future vegas trips. As someone in this thread brought up the comparison of "is this worth 4x the price of Outback?", I would have to say yes, very much so yes.
