84 at Rio Secco, 84 at Cascata

I will get a proper review of Cascata done at some point this weekend.

First time ever shooting a round in competition (or ever) without a double or worse - one of the biggest golf goals I’ve had for the last year or two.

Congratulations that’s fantastic!

Dunno what the hell happened to me on the back 9. Wind kicked up and everything fell apart. RIP to the Callaway Rogue SubZero head. Cracked today. Club is sending it back so the "hope" is that a Mavrik shows up in it's place.

38-41-79 (par 70)

Played a skins match this afternoon with my buddy on one of the country tracks in the area. Not played there in a few years. Very flat but kinda tight, slowish greens and lots of little dams. Slope is 125 which we only found out after, we guessed closer to 116 so I gave myself 9 shots and my mate 20, when we should’ve had an extra each.

Back-to-back sub-80 rounds which I’m pretty pleased with. I drove the ball poorly but everything else was pretty reasonable. I’ve ordered a new shaft for my driver which I believe is a long time overdue. Looking forward to trying it.

1 double
No birdies.
Didn’t count any other stats but I’d guess I had ~28ish putts with no 3-putts.

Career 9-hole personal best alert!

33-43-76

6 birdies, 4 doubles

Lit it up on the front 9, hitting 8 of 9 greens in regulation. Had 4 birdies on the front. The 4 birdie putts I made were from 10, 10, 5, and 10 feet. Missed birdie putts were from 40, 20, 10, and 20 feet.

Back nine was a bit of a disaster. Doubled 10 where I wrong-sided myself on a par 3 and you just can hold the green on that side. Then proceed to 3-putt double the 11th. Then another back-to-back doubles followed by a 3-putt bogey. Ended in style with a 2-putt birdie on 18.

Played the par 5's -3. I need more of that.

So:

Career low 9 of 33
Tied 9-hole birdie record of 4
Tied 18-hole birdie record of 6

My 18-hoe birdie record has stood since I was 17 years old.

Good stuff, Scott. Well half great, half not. It averages out to good.

Back when I played a ton, around 2002, I had a similar 32-42 and a different 9-hole (half round) with 5 birdies, a 3-putt bogey, and a Quadruple bogey for an even par 36.

We always remember the "one that got away."

Thanks all. Hot streak still going.

35-38-73
4 birdies, 5 bogeys, 9 pars

Played the par 5s at -3 again today. Everything is working.

Super windy. Didn't even play that bad either. My 10 foot birdie putts turned into 40 feet today. Also hit a few shots I thought were really good only to watch them sail over the green.

3 birdies, 4 doubles

FSGA one day event. Weather perfect, game not so much. Had a 3-putt bogey and 2 3-putt doubles in the first three holes. Then the next hole I get a plugged lie in the bunker. Now sitting +6 through 4 holes.

5th hole of the day is a 490y par 5. Have 208 left to an island green and have to play a 20 yard cut since I'm in the trees. **** it, I'm +4 anyways. Pull it off but it's a few feet off the putting surface but dry. Chip hangs on the lip and make birdie.

These events are not money makers by any means. We had 10 people in gross division which is actually more than usual. $65 shop credit for 1st, $35 for second. They do have a skins game for everyone who plays regardless of flight. One of my birdies held and took home $265. Funny cause 3 of 4 of us had really good looks inside of 20 feet and I was the only one to make. Mine was from 5 feet.

2 birdies
1 double
1 triple
29 putts

Monthly skins match with my golf buddies. Usually aim to play somewhere new so we were up on the Gold Coast at a fairly short, fairly easy course, though some tight driving holes and lots of water.

Didn’t play all that well aside from driver. Looking at the course map I guessed I wouldn’t be hitting it a lot but I was hitting it great so kept using it.

Back nine was a bit of a mess but I felt like my game has really come a long way after shooting even on the front with pretty sub-par ball striking. I had my PB 76 on a much tougher course the other day and I’ve got the sense that another low one is around the corner.

Put jumbo CP2 grips on my whole set just to experiment, shot 37-31-68 on a par 72 73.4 rating. Was 3 over through 8 on the much easier part of the course, then made eagle on 9, and 5 birdies coming in on the way tougher 9. Nice to play a little golf in the calm desert after playing my last like 15 rounds in south florida.

Really like the jumbo grips after playing midsized multi compounds for the past 10 years, definitely a little easier on my scuffed wrist.

97 - Palm Valley Golf Club - 71.2/126
92 - Verrado (Founders) - 70.7/127
96 - Wickenburg Ranch - 68.2/125
98 - Blackstone - 68.0/124

Phoenix guys trip. For how great I finished 2019 (down to a 9.2 index) I played pretty putrid down there! I guess that is what 4 months without swinging a club does to you.

Wickenburg was the highlight -- sublime experience. Here's a slightly more detailed recap of the courses.

41, 1 birdie 1 double

Played in the strongest wind I have ever experienced in Florida, not counting tropical storms and hurricanes. Was 20-30 yesterday with gusts over 40. I was for sure gonna give that a go!

The downwind holes I was in spots I have never been in before. The into the wind holes were more than a bit difficult. Drives that were in the middle of the fairway were blown 40 yards left.

Perennial midsizer here but I've always wanted to see how I'd like Jumbo. Just too expensive to invest regripping if I don't know I'll like them.

Was -2 thru 4 then fell apart after that. Putter was a foreign object to me the last 10 holes. I had 6 good looks at birdie over those holes and failed miserably on every one of em.

I was kind of worried about the feel chipping with them more than anything, but I actually liked the feel a lot.

Definitely worth maybe trying it on a club just to see.. but expensive for sure. I had a new driver shaft I bought off ebay that I was testing for a few rounds, and had it regripped with the jumbo. Decided to full switch after liking the feel with it for a few rounds.

Aren’t grip thicknesses supposed to be linked to the length of your fingers or hand size?

It's always going to be a preference thing at the end of the day. Back in the day, there was pretty much only one grip size you could get (outside of random weird manufacturers), but now it's so personalized.

I have pretty big hands (wear an XL golf glove), so the jumbo ones don't feel that big. Another thing to consider, is that bigger grips are heavier, so they reduce the swing weight somewhat. I've found counter balancing to be something I like the feel of. Nicklaus used to put lead tape under his grips to create the same effect.

Plantation course, Kapalua golf. Played from regular tees 6700y, starter said it was playing a bit more. Was windy for sure. Cap flew from head a couple of times. Caddie prolly woulda helped, but we booked on the same day and it was close to 500$ with rental clubs+shoes already. One drive was a lost ball, otherwise no worries there. Irons and wedges were on-and-off, well mostly off. And dunno how many putts I had, but it was many. Downhill with the wind I just couldnt stop it. One par-3 four-putt for a double ugh. Did get one birdie on the back-nine at least. Fun holes, great views and money well spent.

Also played Hawaii Kai (was rainy sadly, course was decent but dunno if weather affected but not very memorable) and TPC Harding in SF (which was great again).

Been languishing the past several weeks in the low to mid 80s. Not happy with the Maverik. Gonna just get a used Rogue from CPO and see this one.

78 this am, hit all of 3 drivers on the day, 2 of em really bad.

What's the miss? I got rid of my Sub Zero Flash last year because it just wanted to hook no matter how I hit it. 3 wood is the same way, especially on toe hits. Most of the tour guys play one of the fade faced tour versions (1-3 diamonds). The one reason I keep trying/buying Callaway stuff is there stuff is consistently hot in the smash factor department.

I'm going to try out the SIM in a couple weeks on my two taylormade adapted driver shafts. I tried the 3 wood in Vegas a few weeks ago, and I will definitely be replacing my callaway flash sub zero with it at some point this spring.

Toe hook is for sure a real thing for me with this club. High toe hits in particular. I have no idea why as I have never had that shot in my bag ever. Not a shaft issue as I am using the same one.

Scramble today. Shot 59. Not many of us made putts today. Driver was on. Of the 14 driver holes we used 10 of my drives. One other was playable and the other 3 were not. Considering I was swinging out of my shoes, I'm happy with that.
