Strange round. Triple bogeyed 2 of the first 4 holes including a shank on 1 and a topped drive on 4. Was 8-over after 4 holes.

Managed to pull it together and was actually even par on the back, until another triple on 17. Obviously need to eliminate the blowup holes, was 9-over on 3 holes and 5-over on the other 15.

Scoring question.

For handicap purposes do you cap your score per hole at a certain numbers?

I'm not good (but feel like I'm making improvements!) so like a 105 is a good score for me. Goal is to break 100 this summer.

I've always capped my score per hole at double par. I played with a buddy yesterday and we got to talking about handicaps and he says for handicap purposes you should cap your score at triple bogey. His reasoning was it gives you a more accurate handicap if you're ever getting out and want to play competitively with people who are better than you and double par gives you a "false" handicap and makes it almost impossible to lose to someone with a low handicap. Thoughts?

Yes, it's called Equitable Stroke Control. Under the new handicap system the max you can take on a hole (for handicap purposes) is net double bogey.

Not a member but I have played there several times. Course conditions seem to be very hit and miss. I really like the course.

LOL.
it appears the door may still be a bit ajar.

i appreciate your ability to take the good humored ribbing. it's been fun to see your progress and there's only so much a guy on the west coast can do to try to motivate a guy on the east coast.

Woof.

that result rings too familiar.

Just woke up from a post-round nap. 6:52 am tee time was way too early.

39-39 for a 78 (+6)

Course was longer than the 6250 on the card due to days of rain. Greens were soggy and variable for the first 8-10 holes.

1 birdie
No Doubles

4 Fairways
9 Greens (+ a few on the fringe)
32 Putts (3-jacked the 1st)

Shot 40. One birdie. Hit 3 greens and 3 fairways. Terrible round. Only my 3rd round in the last 6 months.

They don’t take cash because of the Coronavirus. Ridiculous. Like credit cards are safe.

I actually think it is illegal not to accept cash at a public facility. Smacks of discrimination. Not everyone has a credit card.

Playing tomorrow with two pros. Hopefully things will improve.

decent round Precept. curious if you putted any of those approaches that were on the fringe and if you count those as putts.

which, i suppose, is a question for the larger group of folks that track their own stats. if you aren't technically on the putting surface but still use a putter, do you count it as a putt?

I did not count the fringe shots as putts. I also didn't count them as greens.

I had 75 yards in on 3 separate occasions today. Two slightly uphill, one a little downhill. Chunked the uphillers and hit the downhill one to about 15 feet behind the hole.

Interesting!

That’s why total putts can be somewhat misleading.

Total length of putts made may be a slightly better stat.

I did not count the fringe shots as putts. I also didn't count them as greens. I used the putter from the fringe (about 5 feet of approach twice) plus a 4-wood from a tight lie near the collar and only about 15 feet from the hole. Haven't tried that in years. Zipped it 8-10 feet past the hole, but made the putt.

Totally true. I'll see if I can figure that out. Won't be much since I made a couple of 8-footers at most. Lots of 4-footers.

About 30-feet of putts on the front.
About 25 on the back for 55-feet of made putts.

for the record i don't count the fringe as GIR or as a putt if that's the club i choose to use. i was just curious how other folks consider it.

as for the that tight collar lie where you used the 4w, sometimes a hybrid does the trick, but i wouldn't be surprised if you aren't carrying a hybrid if you have a 4w in the bag.

I've always counted my fringes as GIR; and I putt those 99+% of the time

I never do this. I hit 5 greens yesterday. If I count fringes, I hit 11 greens, lol. Technically I suppose there was one where I was about 20 feet short of the green in fairway which I putted to a front pin about 15 feet on...so maybe 10 greens? Still, quite a difference.

My golf right now is deja vu. Hit it well, shot 82. Go to course, it's extremely windy. I make 11 pars, 4 doubles and 3 bogeys. Putting is fine all day, nothing goes in from range, I miss one short one and have one dumb 3 putt, put one stupid shot in a hazard, punch out directly into a tree trunk once. I snap hooked 2 drives....purely because the club is slipping in my hands because it's 101 degrees, which is super frustrating.

One thing I will say is that I've made a commitment to skip work every Friday morning and to go practice chip for a few hours. (well documented on here chipping yips for years). Haven't had confidence like this in years around the greens and it makes your iron shots so much less stressful. Of course I'm on the 12th hole yesterday and had hit a grand total of one chip shot (to 3 feet where I missed the putt). Of course.

Go on Amazon and buy Dry Hands. Put about 10 drops in your hands and rub it in. Instant dry hands. It works so good that it's hard to put the glove back on after it.

You should not be counting fringes as GIR. You are either on the green or not. You are allowed to lift, clean and place the ball on the green. Huge difference. And obviously you don’t have to putt through the fringe either.

stat nits itt

IMO (in my opinion, so leave me alone ) I'd prefer to keep track of how many times per round I use the putter. So by counting the 2' around the green as the green for that purpose and also having a much better sense of my true up-and-down percentage (like have to use a wedge or non-putter to try and save par) is better for what I'm trying to track with my game

And the 2' thing is that if I'm 10 feet short of the green on the fairway/collar/run-up that's not a green - needs to be on the true fringe

Keep stats however you want.

Counting a GIR when you didn’t hit the green seems a little odd.

A 20 foot putt with five feet of fringe to navigate is not comparable to a 20 foot putt on a green.

You can start doing the same for fairways hit when you are in the first cut.

To me (and a lot of others I presume), you hit the green or not. And it is extremely easy to tell the difference.

But a 20 foot putt with less than 2 feet of fringe is comparable to a 20 foot putt with no fringe, for someone of my skill set and putting abilities, IMO

If it's all short grass around the green and I'm 5 feet off of it; I wouldn't count that. My thought is that if I'm just off the green and putting I have a different expectation that way off the green and putting or off the green and chipping.

I have been playing golf forever and I get where you are coming from, especially in regards to total putts.

When you have a 12-foot putt from one inch off the green and you tap it a foot away, it definitely doesn’t feel like a one-putt. Which is why the PGA Tour has devised different metrics like total feet of putts made.

The green though is the green. You are either on it or not. The rules are completely different. Fringes can be only a few inches or 15 feet.

Maybe keep a separate stat for getting close if you want, but I would keep GIR pure.
