43-55-98 (95 with ESC; par 71)

1 birdie, 3 pars, 5 bogies, 7 doubles, 2 others

2 GIR, 5 GIR+1, 8/14 fairways, 28 putts

Played really well on the front. Started off with a double bogey--chunked a PW short with my approach shot, then skulled a pitch over the green, then pitched it and watched it roll off the green onto the front fringe, then putted from the fringe to 1 foot for a tap-in. After that it was pretty good, though. Played the next 7 holes in +4 before ending the front nine with another double bogey. Had 2 GIR (1 par-3, 1 par-5) and both times I had birdie putts inside 10 feet. Missed both of them, though. It was kind of a weird nine because I didn't have many GIR+1, but I was hitting tons of chips & pitches close. 12 putts on the front, plus two from the fringe. Made a couple of 6-footers, but four of the 1-putts were simple tap-ins.

Then for the back I had to play a nine I don't usually play because the other of the three nines was closed. It plays way tougher for me (par 36 vs. par 35, 200 yards longer, a bunch of long par-4s, two par-5s). Bogeyed to start, then a double, then a triple, and there went my chance of breaking 90. Couldn't really scrape anything together. Only highlight was a par-3: hooked a 7-iron just left of the greenside bunker, leaving me a pitch over the bunker to a narrow green. Tried to hit a high flop, but the lie wasn't great (the ball was sitting down on top of some weeds) and it came out lower than I wanted and barely carried to the green, maybe 2 feet (at most) past the fringe. Then it rolled and turned toward the hole, and I figured it had a pretty good chance to go in. Sure enough, it did.

Pretty strange round because it was all over the place. Hit a couple of really nice wedge shots, but also some bad ones. Short game was good for the most part, but on the back there were a few times I'd have liked to have chipped it closer. Putting stats look great, but that's because I didn't have anything outside of 15 feet. I hit most of the fairways, but I didn't feel like I drove it all that well. (Side note: it's the first time in the last 40 rounds at my home course that I've hit at least 50% of the fairways. The last time I was over 50%? 57 rounds ago. That's messed up.) A few of the hit fairways were weak, low shots that didn't break 200 yards, and even on the well-hit drives the distance wasn't great.

I don't mind playing in the rain but it's been raining so much and I've been so busy as it is that I keep saying "it'll stop" then it keeps not stopping. Pretty sure the courses are soaked as there has been flash flood warnings like every day for the last week.

Houston ftl. Last year was the worst drought in recorded history here fairways were cracked and brown and concrete now this year it's monsoon season.

What the short game of someone who shoots in the lowish 90s looks like:

Went to the local par 3 course (par 29 for 9) this evening. I've played this course a few times before, but we finally got some MUCH needed rain this afternoon.

1: 120 yard par 3. I'm used to hitting a wedge and playing the ball to land about 10-15 yards short of the green and watching it bounce on -- so I play for that, hit it a touch light, and watch ball land 20 yards short of green and roll about 15 feet. Joy. Hit poor chip 20 feet past hole. Make putt coming back! 3.

2: 130 yard par 3. Hit pitching wedge, stops on front left collar (pin back left). Horrible putter from 45' gets hung up in fringe and stops about 18 feet short right. Decent putt from there misses left, tap in. 4.

3: 130 yard par 3. Hit really thin pitching wedge that ends up about 45 feet right pin high. (That's my "good miss" - I have a tendency to hit irons very thin/halfway skulled, but when I do, they usually end up the same distance as a "good" shot would have gone.) Try the putter through fringe plan again, similar bad result, leaving it 20 feet short. Rocketball next putt -- hits dead center and skips about 6 feet past. Make putt coming back. 4.

4: 280 yard par 4 / dogleg right around water. Hit 6 iron through dogleg into left rough (actually a good spot, opens up green). 60 degree wedge lands about 35 feet short right but on the green. Rocketball putt 8 feet pass, leave it 2 inches right going back. 5.

5: 101 yard par 3, over water. Decide that a full 60 degree wedge will get there. Line drive it onto green, rolls through into deep rough alongside green. Semi-decent-ish chip 8 feet past, miss putt a bit left, tap in. 4

6: 175 yard par 3. 6 iron caught a bit fat, ends up about 15 yards short of green. Decide to try 60 degree wedge and lob it instead of terrible putter or mediocre chip. 4 feet short, make putt. 3.

7: 315 yard part 4, dogleg right around water. Hit semi-fat 6 iron into left fairway, shorter than I would have liked (farther opens up the green -- where I was half the green was shadowed by water). Pitching wedge lands in good miss spot, about 45 feet short right on the collar. 60 degree wedge to 5 feet. LOL push putt, make 2 footer coming back. 5.

8. 90 yard par 3, water left. Push 60 degree wedge onto right fringe (again, good miss). Leave 40 foot putt from fringe 8 feet short, miss, tap in. 4.

9: 120 yard par 3. Line drive pitching wedge onto left fringe (fortuitiously placed hill helped). Rocketball 40 foot putter 6 feet past. Make putt coming back. 3.

So, 35 (par 29). Hit the ball decently for me, distance control on putting was completely LOL, didn't adjust all that well to the wetter conditions. It didn't FEEL that hot when I went out but I was dripping sweat from about the 3rd hole on. Apparently a 76 degree dewpoint (temp: 89) will do that.

83 on par 70, while still hitting 3 irons off every tee besides par 3s

2 birdies, 6 GIR, pretty excited at how much I've improved in the last month

hit it to 1 inch on a 175 par 3 too

Played the most bizarre round I can remember in a while at Landmark at Avalon just west of Knoxville. I pulled or hooked almost all my drives. I clunked irons fat or short, felt like a groove or two low all day when not chunked.

Carded a 37+39=76 with a double on the shortest par 3 and lost ball bogey on the shortest par 5 along the way, along with 2 birdies. I made almost everything on the green, and when I missed it was a 6" or less tap in. Also most chips were nearly holed. At least I did something right. Now if I can only find my normal ugly swing again...

44-54-98

1 birdie, 2 pars, 6 bogies, 7 doubles, 2 others

3/14 fairways, 4 GIR, 10 GIR+1, 37 putts

Pretty much the same story as my last round, except that this time my putting on the back nine was a complete disaster. 5 straight 3-putts (2 of them from inside 15 feet) to start the back nine. I really would like to string 18 good holes together instead of having to settle for nine.

It's an interesting layout. Winds through the hills pretty well. A couple of the downhill 4's are almost drivable when the conditions are right, bigger hitters could do it. Most holes have some trees, but not too tight. Lots of sand. 18 is a bear, 525 dogleg left par 5 that plays longer with the 3rd shot being all carry over water. Probably the 2nd best public course in the area IMO behind Rarity Pointe, which I hacked around on Sunday. Hope to get back to it one more time before I move at the end of the month.

58 on the front nine at a relatively easy course I play often. It's about 10 strokes higher than my average on that course.

Sliced every drive, and couldn't putt worth ****. Also, had a couple of really, really bad chips around the green.

I'm terrible.

I did the opposite today. Haven't played in 3 weeks and shot 45/33 for a 78. Couldn't keep it out of the desert on the front nine with pull draws on everything. Back nine I get it figured out and easily could have shot a 31 since I missed 2 four foot birdie putts. My round consisted of 6 pars, 5 birdies, 4 doubles, and 3 bogeys.

Went nine holes on par. Really satisfied with how I played, although I could have put some more birdies in the holes and not ended with a three putt.

4/4 fairway hits with the driver, that was a while ago. Let's crush this weekend!

Been raining forever and thought I could sneak in 18 today. Haven't played in 3.5 weeks. Got 6 holes in before the rain came pouring down. Finished 9, cursed the city I live in, then went home.

HC 28.7

Hole 1:
259yd. par 4 (fairway lake in front of green).
7 iron struck well but pulled to the first cut.
115 out, hit perfect P-wedge to 12 feet.
Slight uphill, 8 inch right to left break putt dies in the hole. First birdie in AGES.

Hole 2:
Par 4 291yd. (driveable but tees all the way in back today)
Hit good straight drive into the wind, settles middle fairway.
3/4 SW approach to 18 feet. Mood is good.
Lag is slight downhill, then slight uphill 12" left to right. Ball rolls an inch left of hole and settles 2 inches behind. Sick start - this is not how I normally putt! Tap in par.

Hole 3:
140 yards tees at 147.
8I stayed back on it and pulled up a bit/pulled it. Left of green in some muddy crap.
No idea how to hit this short pitch up to the elevated green with close pin out of mud... Give it a LW chip and fat it out of the mud, settles a few yards short of green. There's one shot thrown away. Chip it again it rolls a few inches next to pin but way too hard and settles 21' away.
Left with tough lag (uphill, then down, a couple feet left to right). Somehow hit a sweet lag to a couple feet left of pin and tap in for double.

+1 through 3.

Hole 4:
377 par 4, 90d dogleg left.
Drive left of FW but a good one settles up on some berm near a tree but I've got a shot to the green.
7I (ball slightly below feet) is pure. Debated hitting 8I but had some sidewind and well if there's a debate I take 1 more club. Anyway pure this ****er right at the flag but it's too much and it settles in the fringe behind green, leaving me what looks like a putt.
I get up there and the ball mark is ~4 yards past the flag. Getting to repair ball marks makes a 28HC happy. But I should have hit the 8I ah well.
Didn't walk off the putt distance but there is 3 feet of fringe I gotta hit through. Putt was probably about 30 feet. Hit a great lag to pin high, but a few feet left of hole (was left to right). Tap in par. Or not. 3 footer slight downhill slight left to right of course I miss it right - what a joke - bogey. Urrrg.

Hole 5:
546 par 5.
Hit great drive but settles left of fairway (big lake right of FW so I try to stay left edge).
Hit the best shot of the day from here. A 6I up over the big tree (this hole is dogleg left. Ball plops down in middle of fairway leaving me a straight 9I to hole.
Get up to ball and it's in some muddy ****. Wasn't too worried but then, inexplicably, I hit it fat as hell and chunk it up well short of the green - god dammit. Having a 9I in in the middle of FW on this hole is better than what I usually have, like a 6I from first cut somewhere...
Now I have a partial lob wedge pitch to an elevated green and I hit it short, which seems to be my M.O.
Lying 4, still not on green.
5th shot is a lob wedge chip to 13 feet past the hole. Sigh.
2 putt for double. Lag was to about 18 inches. Thrilled with lagging at this point.

Hole 6:
376 par 4
Hit a big high fade into the wind that settles short and behind some tree.
Left with like 175 and have a go at the green from under the tree. It's drizzling on me now. Hit a 5I to pin high but just right of green settles up on the apex of a berm.
SW hinge-and-hold chip (just started trying this today) is good distance but 14' right of hole (lol). 2 putt bogey.

+5 thru 6. This course is short and easy for sure.

Hole 7
313 par 4
5 minute break under tree hoping rain blows over before I tee off... nope.
Drive not long but dead middle of fairway, over the lake.
Left with 9I that has to get over a tree canopy that creeps into the fairway. No problem. Hit it a bit thin though as my hands are slipping and barely gets over tree. Ball lands short of green and settles in fringe about 18" from green.
Left with long putt, over 30 feet but didn't walk it off as it's pouring on me. It's uphill a bit. Ball flies out of fringe and it's hauling ass toward the hole way too hard, it looks like it may go in and I'm praying for it. Ball basically flies right over hole and settles 16 feet past. lol wtf. Would have been a terribly dirty birdie anyway. 2 putt downhill from 16 feet for bogey.

Hole 8
477 par 5, totally ****ed this one up.
Took a 10 minute break under tree and ate a nutter butter and put a rain jacket on and drank some water. Cleaned ball off which was covered in green seed.
Hit ****ty ass drive that bounces in front of tee and goes 60 yards. **** here it comes and it's pouring out. AGHHHHHHHHHH
From here I should have just hit a couple 6Is then wedge and 2 putt for bogey but I was pissed at the rain and tried to be a hero.
Grabbed the 2I and block it a bit and it goes about 70% as far as I thought.
Grab a 4I and try to hit back in the fairway and I block it (ground is soaked - club just getting chewed up) and it goes nowhere.
Try to hit a 7I over the tree (I'm right of FW trees at this point). Chunk the **** out of this one and it's low and way short. Hits the tree canopy and goes nowhere.
I'm left with no shot to the green and was still trying to be a hero. I grab a 2I for a partial punch shot to the left of the tree 20 feet in front of me. Yeah that hits dead square in the middle of the tree of course and bounces back and to the right. ****

Lying 5 still like 100+ yards out and gotta fly a tall tree.
Grab an A-wedge and get pissed and just step up to it and mash it and it's short and left and plops in one of the 3 bunkers on the entire course. ****

SW out of bunker I take about 2 seconds to think of shot and hit it out but short of green. Lying 7, still not on green.

SW chip goes 20 feet past hole. 2 putt for quint. Yay ESC gives me only a triple. Sigh. It's pouring all over me this entire time lol. Just told myself I was playing at Royal Lytham haha.

Hole 9 177 par 3 that is absolute AIDS of a hole even when it's not pouring.
Take my glove off as it's probably doing more harm than good at this point. Club feels better in bare hands but still hit a ****-shot low liner that settles well short of the elevated green.
Lob wedge plops short of green (recurring theme).
SW chip ok but too hard and 23' past hole. Great lag to 2 feet tap in for double.

49 (47 ESC) 17 putts
1 bird
1 par
4 bogeys
3 doubles
1 :LS^FHJSLFJ

HC could get down to around 25 after I log some more rounds. I really wish I would have just hit D/6/6/wedge on that par 5, that was stupid to grab the low irons. I was thinking about the really good 5I I hit on my approach on 6.

I didn't play on Thursday since it rained much of the day. First off day this month. Played nine yesterday, didn't write down my score, just a fun round.

First round of club championship today. Super easy course setup, tees up, tons of front pins. Shot a very shaky 39-39-78. 2 birdies, 1 double. 7/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 35 putts (including what I think is my first 4 putt of the season). Had to grind over every single putt, even the 3 inch birdie tap ins, no feel at all.

1 (360, par 4): No warmup driver swing produces a quick hook into the trees. Good break leaves me with a big gap and a free swing, I punch a 3h up almost green high. Good pitch off a dirt lie to 4', make it. 4

2 (130, 3): 8 iron to 15 feet, poor putt comes up 3' short, make it. 3

3 (520, 5): 3h layup off tee. 3h to middle of the fairway, 130 out. 8i to 10', leave putt 3' short, make it. 5

4 (340, 4): Driver is straight but slightly pulled and ends up behind a tree. Punch 3h to 75 yards, PW to 10', miss badly, make 3 footer. 5.

5 (160, 3): Pushed 5h comes up short in rough. Cautious pitch to 7', ram downhill putt 4' past, sneak it in side door. 4.

6 (380, 4): Driver ticks some branches and drops in the left rough. 3h is flighted perfectly but is left out to the right. Pitch is straight uphill, too hard to 25' past. Best putt of the day to 1', tap in. 5.

7 (375, 4): Perfect drive in center of fairway to 130. 8i covers flag, ends up 15 feet past. Leave downhill putt 2' short. Yip the ever living daylights out of it, rolls 6' past. Miss comebacker, confidence gone, tap in left handed. 6.

8 (135, 3): 8i to 7', putt not close, make 3'er. 3.

9 (455, 5): Good drive to right rough just inside 200. Second shot calls for a fade, not my specialty. Get under cautious 3h just a bit, comes up about 30 yards short just inside the hazard line. Pitch from there stops one rotation short. Tap in. 4.

39 (par 35).

10 (370, 4): Perfect drive in center to 125. 8i to 12 feet. Putt runs about 1.5 feet past. YIPPPPPPPPPPPP. Tap in. 5.

11 (475, 5): Worst drive of the day is blocked into trees right, knocked down fast. Lucky break, it ends up in the right rough. I still have 230 to the corner and have to keep it low under tree limbs for the first 50 yards. Damn near perfect driver off deck to 150, 6i to 10', putt not close, make 3'er. 5.

12 (370, 4): 3h to 160 in center of fairway. 5h misses just right. Poor pitch to 5', putt ... goes in? WTF.

13 (130, 3): 8i to 5', miss badly, make 2'er. 3.

14 (470, 5): Excellent drive in fairway. Don't quite flush 4w, comes up 30 yards short in fairway. Chunk chip. Putter from fringe way too hard to 8', miss, tap in. 6.

15 (475, 5): Good drive in fairway. 8i for position to 130. 8i dead nuts perfect, hits 3' right of the flag, feeds straight left, ends up 3 inches on the other side of the pin, no idea how it didn't go in. Tap in. 4.

16 (175, 3): 4h to 8', miss testy downhill big breaker badly. Make 4' comebacker. JFC. 3.

17 (365, 4): 4w misses the fairway right. 6i from 150 out of the rough to 6'. Putt not especially close. Make 1'er. 4.

18 (405, 4): 4w in fairway. 4w approach misses wide right. Mediocre pitch to 6', miss another twisty downhill putt quite badly, manage to make 2' comebacker. 5.

39 (par 37), 78 total.
